  1. I would set Promes as IF(A) and Neres as an IW(A/S). Promes is a bit more of a goalscorer, Neres more of a dribbler. While not unsound advise, it isn't the question asked here at all, and from what I can see in his post and know about the player IRL it's not something he's struggling with as these players and roles are reliable enough. Which duty? Btw, Tadic is a very creative player, so I would consider playing him in a more creative role than PF. That I agree. Tadic as a PF seems a bit limited. Would personally go for a F9, but also consider a DLF of CF.
  2. After a few saves I just couldn't get into I stumbled upon a save with Red Star I really enjoy. Started unemployed, took over the job in October when they were at the bottom of the league, just narrowly became champions with only 63 points. Now in the pre-season of season 2. Thinking about making it one club save, it seems a pretty interesting challenge, with a nice long term goal of pushing the posh PSG from the throne as the number one club in Paris. Will be following your thread and see if I can outdo you ;-). Just read the first 2 seasons, will now complete my second season and then read further.
  3. I'm not sure how it works either, have experimented it a bit though. I sent one player on a course which was apparently a succes. Didn't see a thing initially though, his attributes remained unchanged. Since the course he does have much better training scores though, so I guess one or more hidden attributes have changed and he leads by example on the training ground now.
  4. I usually try to play an attacking free flowing game. In general if you play mostly on the opponents half you tend not to create as much CCC's but a lot more half-, or even quarter chances. I did a little experiment once and set up fluid counter attacking tactic next to my possession bases attacking tactic. Saved before each match and played it with both tactics. The result were pretty similar in general, but with possession tactic I had like 30 shots, 1 CCC, 3 half chances, I won 3-0, with counterattacking I had 10 shots on goal, 4 CCC, won 3-0. If have a lot of possession on the opponents half, in general that mean the area around the penalty box is pretty congested, so creating CCC's is more difficult. Counter attacks have a much bigger chance to result in a CCC, as there is much more space to play in. Basically the choic between a possession- and a counterattacking strategy is whether you go for large amount of low quality chances, or for a small amount of high quality chances. I go for the former because it has a higher entertainment value, but both can work equally well. As long as you see the football you like and the most important statistic, the final scoreline, is in your favor I wouldn't worry too much about that. However, there are of course always things too improve in your tactic if you want. Just by looking at it I must admit that there are two thing i don't like about it: 1. It's completely symmetrical. In general I find that some a-symmetry creates more interesting movement patterns. One side a FB(A), other side a WB(S), one side a Mezzala, otherside a BBM for example. 2. Your whole midfield consists of runners. BBM, BWM(S) and RPM are all roles that basically move around the whole pitch. Which may be exactly what you want, but it means there is a risk that there are moments in the game that there's nobody to defend all that space, as they are all somewhere else.
  5. As said before, this schedule doesn't look particularly intensive. Also an important note is that General Training improves team bonding, technical training doesn't. Team bonding raises vision and anticipation during matches. General Tactical and General Possession are some of my favorite blocks personally. Also very interesting blocks for the style of football you want play are Technical - Build from the back, Defending Engaged and Defending from the front. Personally I like during the preseason to also add some physical sessions, both to raise intensity and because pace, stamina and workrate are very important attributes for this style of play. Some practices matches also raise intensity and help your team gel.
  6. You can however start games in the middle of the next season, by adding Brazil or Sweden in the DB for example and choose their next season start date, You can't however not do that if you have the MLS loaded, for licensing reasons I suppose.
  7. You can't really complain about unrealistic when you're at first place with Man United, can you? You can't really expect the whole league dynamics to remain the same except that your team is more successful than RL.
  8. High tempo, short passing, positive or higher mentality, more intense pressing is what i do and the board is happy with the entertaining football on display
  9. Can't really say anything specific without more information. However... Gegenpress, Control Possession and Tiki-Taka are all tactics that tend to take the play to the opponents half, thus tend to compress the space in which to play. You need a squad with players that are good at playing in small places. That means Technical players in fm terms. You also need a few creative players, so high flair and vision, who are able to still find an opening in that compressed space. If you don't have these type of players you get into the situation of the backs passing the ball to each other, not able to find an opening, until one of them makes a mistake and gives away a counter opportunity. If you do have these type of players, the problems might be that your tactic is to static, so check your player roles, what would be the interaction between them. It could also be a morale issue. If you burn them down after every match lost they won't play with any confidence anymore. Also keep in mind that it can take while to build familiarity with your tactics. In my beta save I was expect mid table but was find myself battling relegation at the end of september. Had long look at my trained tactics but couldn't find that much wrong with them. I was close to giving up but decided to give one last chance. Organised team meeting, was bit nicer than I wanted to be in team talks to give them back some confidence. Suddenly they started winning some matches and I ended the season just 2 points shy of promotion play-offs. way above expectation with still the same tactic I used at the start of the season when I lost every single match. It can take while before a tactic clicks with the players.
  10. I agree with warlock. I do like tinkering myself with tactics too much that I'm not interested in downloading one. I do like to have a look at what others have done die learning and inspiration. So some screenshots and perhaps a bit of background about why certain choices are made would be highly appreciated.
  11. I like starting my careers smallish, for example by managing by managing an youth national team. My current save I started unemployed and decided to take on the Canada U23 team an try to qualify for the Olympics. Where usually my first club 'raise eyebrows', this was approved by the in-game media, who agreed that managing youngsters was probably a good idea for an inexperienced manager like me. To be honest though, it feels a little bare boned. I miss certain features that are present in club management. No board Vision Although I do understand that board vision probably isn't as big a factor as it might by clubs, I do feel that federations would still have some objectives they would like you to achieve. For example - Qualify for tournament - Be competitive in tournament, survive the group phase, etc. - Play attractive football - Dressing room atmosphere - Perhaps also something like time for a new generation when they want you to give some younger players chance No Training In the same vein, there's no match feedback from fans, even though I would argue that the national side has the biggest fan base of them all in many nations. Here in Holland there's a saying there are 17 million bondscoaches (federation managers). Even people normally not that interested in football still have an opinion about the national side. Another I'm missing is training. I know I'm not there to develop players, but I'm still have to get them ready for the match right? before an international match there are a few days where the group is together an prepare for the match ahead. All I do however is team selection. It seems to me that especially during tournament there are interesting choices to be made with training. Do I focus on keeping them fit and do mostly recovery training, or do I take the gamble they won't keep injured and focus more on match preparation? Related to match preparation, since I can't do training I can't do tactical briefing either. No Club Relations Relations with clubs and club managers as a federations manager don't seem to really exist in FM. In reality there are often frictions and also sometimes cooperation. When I use a players who has just recovered from injury or is simply tired for a non crucial match, and then that player gets injured or jaded, I would expect his club manager isn't all to happy with me. Recently here in Holland there was quite some discussion about some talented youngsters with multiple nationalities, Ihattaren and Dest in particular. Part of the discussion was how much the KNVB should do to get them to choose for Holland, or whether they should just leave it up to the players. With Ihatarren Koeman said he had also kept in close contact with Van Bommel about how the players was feeling about it and that Van Bommel also had encouraged the player to choose the Holland. With Dest, who in the end choose Team USA, apparently the Ajax couching staff had informed Koeman they should keep an eye on him when he started to develop a lot more rapidly recently, since even though he had played for the USA on youth levels, it seemed he might had enough quality for the Dutch national team after all. it would be nice if you can have chat with in game with other managers and perhaps ask them to encourage the player to choose for your national side. Especially when it's a talented youngster who might not yet be good enough for your team, so you don;t want to cap him yet, but already be good enough for the national team of his of the rationality. It would also be nice if a club might inform you about a talented youngsters you might want to add to your national pool before it's too late. No Player Interactions Last feature I miss from being a club manger, it that I can't interact with the player outside of team talks. I can't say I happy I'm am with creativity of how disappointing I was with his tackling. When scores a goal they usually get a good grade, but sometimes I still want to comment on an aspect of his play O'm not to happy about. If say that in team talkwhile the player went from 6.3 to 7.2 after he scored goal he won't understand. In a personal interaction the sometimes do however. Also the interaction part could help with building relationships with players. Finally mostly just a side note, if I'm playing the with Canada U23 vs USA U23, during the match the comment would mostly just say Canada and USA, no? Is there no short name available in the DB for this?
  12. Adding weight isn't the same as adding fat though. Muscles tissue is actually denser and thus heavies that fatty tissue, it could very well be they're becoming stronger. Since they're kids they might also still grow a little. have you checked whether they increase din height as well?
  13. That's true. I tried improving players at lowest level, after a while they just stop improving and training report state things like needs to train fulltime and needs to play against better opposition.
  14. How often do these freak or exceptional player come by on average? Once every 3 seasons, once every 10 seasons?
  15. Bad personalities can indeed be impossible to coach. It can be very frustrating, but yeah, basically the only thing you can do is try mentoring him.
  16. Yes it was, thank you. That is pretty much what I was wondering. So it is indeed worth it to get a less capable HOYD attribute wise to get a better fit with the tactical style you want to play. So the JCA, JPA and WWY, the highlighted parts if you select the HOYD staff role, don't have anything to do with the quality of youngsters you get. That's interesting indeed.
  17. I'm aware personality matters. I highly suspected preferred formation matters. What I'm really curious about though, is whether tactical and passing style matters. Will 2 HOYD's. both with the exact same attributes and preferred formations, but one with Route One and direct passing style preference and the other with Tiki-Taka and a short passing style preference bring in different type of players, for example physical vs technical like fast wingers vs technical inside forwards and strong NCB's vs more technically well rounded BPD's? That something I'm curious about. Would it be worth it take a slightly less talented one attribute wise because he has tactical preference similar to your own? I know I gladly pay a few attribute points for a better personality, but I'm wonder if I should do the same with tactical preferences (other than formation because I already do that). Will I get players that better fit my tactic, or just less talented players when I do that?

  19. There is something that bothers me with FM staff management regarding staff management. is that you can only recruit staff immediately. So when I offer a contract to a staff member who has currently an expiring contract I simply have to buy down the contract, even if it's May and his contract expires the end of June. Why isn't it possible for staff to set the transfer date at the start of next season date, like it is for players? This bother me even more if I want replace staff that has an expiring contract, especially for key positions where you can only have one. I have a staff member who has been a loyal servant to the club, but unfortunately for him the club has outgrown him, so I want a higher quality member once his contract expires. That means I either have to fire him for his last month, or I have wait for his contract to expire before I start recruit and an replacement. It feel wrong and disrespectful to fire a guy end of May just because his contract expires the 1st of July. But it would be silly to wait until then before I start to look for a replacement. So please SI give us the option for staff transfers to set them at the start of next season, just like we can for players!

  21. So I have shortlisted 2 HOYD to replace my current one once his contract expires next month. One has Park The Bus as tactical style, and 4-2-3-1 DM-AM Wide as favorite formation with a direct play-style. The other one has Tiki-Taka, 4-3-1-2, standard. I'm playing with either 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-3 DM, and try to play a positive short passing game with high pressing. In terms of style I guess Control Possesion, Tiki-Taka, Vertical Tiki-Taka and Gegenpressung are all fine. Park the bus is however the opposite of what I want. However, the one with a preferred tactical style that fits my philosophy has a preferred formation without wingers and two strikers. I'm a bit worried that if I choose that one I will get a shortage of winger and a abundance of strikers through my academy. Is that justified, or won't that really matter? Will have tactical style an influence of the type of players I get? Does a Park The Bus guy is more like to produce Anchor Man and BWM as DM, while vertical tiki-taka guy is more like to get produce a regista for example?
  22. I'm not to sure about that. I do think that a lot of frustration about the 3D ME isn't actually the ME, but clumsy animations we just didn't have in 2D. As to the OP, just take a break from the game. It can do wonders is my own experience. Personally I wouldn't mind if SI would skip a year though, make the next season a paid DLC DB upgrade and I would be fine. Perhaps it would give them a bit more time to experiment and develop aspects of the game that have become a bit stale over the years. I really like the new club vision feature though, that was exactly one of those stale parts that definitely needed some innovation.
  23. I'm a fellow Ajax fan and I also can't help myself in trying to implement the Ajax philosophy in most of my FM saves. I also borrowed the TIPS from them. I have chosen slightly different key attributes for insight and speed though. For insight I went for off the ball, positioning and like you anticipation and decisions. My idea behind it is that in the end a player is without more often than with the ball, and OTB and POS are the stats that best reflect how a player behaves without the ball, in attacking situations and defensive situation respectively. I want players to provide passing options and deny the opponent passing options so the opponent can't find an easy escape when pressing. Because of this last reason I try to get positioning to a semi decent level even for most attacking minded players. The philosophy is that when I loose the ball it will be usually near the opponents goal. By pressing immediately and covering passing lanes the opponent will be forced to make a mistake or pray a hail Mary, play a long ball which will hopefully easily be collected by my defenders. This seems to be reflected in my matches, but whether this really is because of the above average position my attacking players have for their position, or just a result of the tactics I don't know to be honest. For speed I went with acceleration, agility and like you stamina, the idea behind those is that since it's my aim to play the game on the opponents half, space will be limited. So top speed isn't that important. But quick accelerations and turns are, as these can be just what's needed to open up a passing opportunity or get into a positions to receive the ball. Anyway, nice to see a fellow player with somewhat similar approach to the game. Good catch on Tonali btw. He's an interesting player for sure.

IRL they play a 3-4-1-2 system, with defensive block of 3 defender and 2 defensive midfielder, than 2 wide midfielders and an attacking midfielder connecting play and 2 strikers in a counter attacking system. Thieir IRL manager at least seems to think that works best. Don't pay too much attention to the team report though, as it's an average for the whole squad, the players you actually play may actually have decent pace, stamina and determination, just the back ups that are sorely lacking. That being said, it doesn't sound like a squad suited for gegenpressing.
  25. So having dipped my toes in FM109 after skipping last year and not having played FM17 that much, the last FM I turned inside out is FM16. So I had a bunch to learn. Most I start to figure out. What I don't get however is what I am supposed to do with Scenario's. I can set them up in the tactics screen, apparently I can train for them. But do they really do something. I've tried to play with it, but I don't see much of an effect. What is it supposed to do, and how do I best make use of it?
