  1. Not sure what I think about this.

My first attempt was PSV, I've set up a pretty bad, overly attacking tactic and got destroyed 7-5 (!) by Hercales in the first league match. CL Qualifiers also saw me getting disappointing results.

Second attempt was with Maccabi Tel Aviv, one of the top two sides in Israel.

Maccabi did win the league a few years ago with season records like 27-8-1 and and 26-9-1, so I can't say my results are completely unrealistic - but it is quite a stretch.

  2. If the current set up works well in the league, I'd stick to it :)

When hoping for a draw against a stronger team, I'd prioritize keeping more players behind the ball at all times. This could be achieved by switching the wingbacks to FB-S/D, and perhaps pulling the AML/AMR back to ML/MR.

A positive mentality will still encourage players to take more risks and position themselves higher up the field - which could be a good idea, but if you find it happens too much, taking it down to "balanced" will help.

Higher D Line and higher LoE are also a rather aggressive, risky strategy when defending.

Typically big underdogs will look to protect space by remaining more compact.

  3. Lowering the lines can only help so much - it's still a very aggressive formation by nature, and your choice of mentality, roles and duties makes it even more aggressive.

Both wingback push up high, the RPM roams and leaves the center - who's holding position in case your attack breaks down? With the current set up it's basically down to both CBs and no one else.

I'm still a bit in the past on FM19 - although given this is an FM18 thread technically I'm in the future

Anyway, this is copy-pasted from the Online Manual

If you guys have something more recent that supersedes it, by all means please share I'm not out to win an argument.

Honestly I think your quote actually supports what has been said by others and myself - the jumping reach attribute already factors in the height. But I can see why it might be confusing, they worded it rather poorly.

The in-game hint states it quite clearly I think. But if I were to explain it in my own terms, I'd say if your hypothetical two guys face off from a standing start, they're both going to get their feet the same distance off the ground, only the tall one's head will naturally be 10 inches higher up!

Of course when you put it into a game situation everything's a factor - a whole host of mental and physical attributes to put them in the right place, at the right time, to even make the jump.

I'm not sure you're right about this, the description of the attribute is "reflects the highest point that a player can reach with his head", so this should be an absolute term - regardless of height (i.e. 11 jumping reach gets you to the same point off the ground, no matter how tall or short you are).

I've read the article from TFA and watched some of the match (full match is on youtube), and thought of this.

    lineup.png.4cf6e9a46c09b5d854d15a8a79bc2afb.png

You can see Madueke on the right hug the line quite a bit with Mwene standing narrower than him. First I wasn't convinced of making Max this aggressive but he's constantly making crazy runs, even though he rarely ends up in the last line as Wing Backs to in FM when you are camping in the opposition's half but the fact is, that PSV rarely does that anyway since they don't care losing the ball if they get a good press trigger anyway.

The Gotze role I'm quite unsure, you can see him standing right to Zahavi in a more classic 4-2-2-2 shape quite a bit so I thought of shifting him to the RAMC, but on the heat map shown in the TFA article he's mostly operating in the left half space so keeping him in the middle and let him make his decisions himself could be the best replication of that in FM.

I'd start by just using Attacking Mentality for quick transitions and the extremely urgent pressing with High/High lines you can obviously see here, was amazed seeing a Roger Schmidt team in full force again. Then use OIs to press the opponent's FBs and maybe if you want to prepare like that look for victims in their Centre Backs/Midfielders with bad composure, vision, passing to press as well. On attacking one less attacking width and to replicate the very narrow press force opposition outside. Then add TIs depending on the opponent and what you can see in the match engine.

    Fantastic, love it. Thank you!

I need to look into this deeper to be able to contribute to a replication but I wanted to ask why Gotze as SS? Schmidt is a 4-2-2-2 Red Bull dogmatic who now switched to this 4-2-3-1 to give Gotze a more central position playing to his strengths so I'd thought that it would be more like an AP or Treq role?

You might be right, I'm not sure about my choice.

My observation was that he contributed to the team pressing too much to be a Treq.

He was also consistently moving into channels and looking to score, another trait the sounds more like an SS than an AP.

  8. I got inspired by their 5-1 win and would like to try and implement their style in FM.

I've watched some parts of the match and read this tactical analysis:

    https://totalfootballanalysis.com/match-analysis/uefa-champions-league-qualifying-2021-22-psv-galatasaray-tactical-analysis-tactics

And this is what I came up with.

Not sure about some of the roles.

    Positive

    Play out of defence

    More direct

    Higher Tempo

    (pass into space?)

    (fairly narrow?)

    Counter
    Counter Press

    Higher D Line
    (much) Higher line of engagement
    Much more urgent pressing
    Prevent GK short Distribution

    Force opposition outside

Would love to hear your insights, especially if you've watched the whole game :)

  9. I'd be interested in hearing your experience with this.

I find that even within a winning system and a very well performing team, getting DMs (anchor men, for example) to achieve a high average rating is very difficult.

For me this has also been the case with CMs who aren't expected to score or assist much - the match engine rarely seems to think they've had an exceptional game.

Has this been the case for you as well?

A couple of examples. Palhinha mostly played as an anchor man.

Both of them have been a part of very succesful seasons.

I'm sorry you feel this way, but your approach to this thread has been very bad.

You post a tactic, people give you very good and precise advice - next thing we see is you posting a new team and a new tactic, disregarding everything that has been said.

WHen I set up it differently it is onyl the worst. And with Arsenal, Roma or Seviila I tried many tactics, altough I was always trying to put it logical, I mean without some extremes...

I honestly don't think you've put much thought into fixing what has been suggested here - which is why you can't expect very different results in my opinion.

Even if you like attacking with many players, think about where they end up on the pitch with the roles and duties they're given - then think what happens when you lose the ball, and who's supposed to cover for them.

In all of the tactics here so far, there's not enough covering players (for my taste), and some of them aren't suited to the task either.

Thank you for your great post, it is so obvious you care...

I listened to some of your advices and beat Atletico away, but in next game I lost home to Betis (had all the same like against Atletico only tweaked positive mentallity). And then lost to Eibar, (was losing 4:0) ://

I see what you wanted to say to me, but it is still the same issue, but I still dont get it how to play for example quick passing game, or defensive game against bigger sides, or possesion game, or through the middle to feed strikers, or with one striker (433, 4231).... I still dont know anything, dont know direction to go... Was it purpose to be this hard? I mean, I am person of maybe average IQ, I love this game (playing it from CM 00/01), exploring tactics from end of november and I STILL didnt figure it out.

Averagely intelligent person who loves the game and have experience should have master it in two months time. Ii is hard to motivate yourself to play it when every game is some different problems

In FM 2020 I knew that it is ideal to play higher tempo, etc., here I dont know how to set up, for me this is all 100000 combinations and I dont know how to adapt. But, once again, you helped me a lot with your advices

Two games is too little to judge, and you had a good result in one of them, but keep this in mind -

both Rakitic and Oliver are very poor defensively. Check out their marking, tackling, positioning, bravery, aggression - they're all around 8-12.

You let the wingers bomb forward and allow Rakitic to roam from position. So in most cases, you'll have one, maybe two players covering the central area when you lose the ball - and both of them aren't good at it.

You also ask the team to press more - which will pull them even more out of position.

I'm not saying it can't work - but you should expect to be very leaky in defence. And Eibar took an advantage of it on that day.
