The real problem is that making a gegenpress tactic, where players run and press in a high way, while leading to the decrease in players's tiredness, does not lead to become less effective. A tired player should no longer be able to make that pressing in the non -possession phase, and should not allow lucidity in the possession phase. This does not seem to me happen

In my current Gladbach save, I just played a friendly against a 4th-division German team. The AI made no subs, pressed heavily for the entire match, and still managed to have 7 outfield players with "fair" condition after 90 minutes. FM23 seemed to have the same issue with fatigue not affecting the AI's ability to press, and it made the game miserable at times.

How do you know they're at maximum pressing? You can check the AI profiles for play styles, if they're all set to Gegen then something funky's going on :D

I checked the opposing manager profiles for the league, and only see one that has Gegenpress as his preferred style. What I'm seeing most often is that the AI seem to use a lower LOE and defensive line, but in conjunction with an extremely high press once my team get into the attacking third. Not sure what style that is...

What tools you have in your disposal (Data Hub, Analysts etc), same for AI. If AI will see that you have problems with high pressing, then will press you more. Another reason is that you facing AI managers with preference in high pressing.

I wouldn't say I'm having problems with it- my team has won 17 of 20 so far this season, and won a quintuple the previous season. I looked at the pressing preferences for the other teams in my league, and only 7 of 17 have "More Often" as a pressing style, with all the others as "Balanced." But if you watched the matches, you'd think every team was managed by Marcelo Bielsa.

My concern is that every match feels the same, and it's taking a lot of the fun out of the game for me, even though I win around 80% of the time. There's just no tactical variation at all.

This has and will continue to be a big problem for having success in a league that has a lower reputation that the big 3 or 4 European leagues.  Clubs from these leagues appear to have unlimited funds and want to steal at ridiculously low prices.  If you stick to your guns and negotiate up you can get some big returns and so it can be a source of good income to continue to rotate your squad.  You do have to accept that you will probably have to sell some of the top talent as it can be difficult to keep them once the big guys come calling.

Yeah, I've gotten used to it, annoying as it can be. I do negotiate and usually get good fees, and can often get players looking to leave bigger clubs for more playing time as replacements so my talent level doesn't drop.

    1. How easy it is to retain top players. Whenever a big club comes in for a player and I have made it to the top division, I can chat to the player and agree on an absurd asking price and the team never matches it and I can get them to stay no problem. Reality is that when a top team wants a player, eventually he leaves - might be that year, the next but they leave eventually and usually within 0-2 years. I am able to keep world class talent in the French league and not PSG for their entire career.

Wish I had your problem. I'm playing as Sporting CP, and have won 3 league titles in 5 seasons, plus a couple solid CL runs. I'm also on my 4th GK, 4th starting striker, and have had at least 3 different starters at every other position except left back, where I've only had 2. The Premier League treats my club like a one-stop shop every transfer window.

    More interaction bizarreness.

Player comes to talk to me about leaving. He's a good player but the restrictive rules on homegrown players in the league I'm managing in means he isn't playing as much as he'd ideally like.

So he wants to leave because he says he's realised he'll never be good enough to play reguarlly for us. Personally I disagree but fine- I ask him what would it take to keep him here?

'I want to play in the Ukranian Premier League. If you can promise me that I'll stay.'

What? So you want to leave because you think you're not good enough to play regualrly now in the Ukrainian First Division but you'll stay if I promise we'll get promoted? How does that make sense? Surely if you think you're already not good enough to play regularly at this level then that is only going to get worse at a higher level?

It isn't damaging my save as we're top of the league and I can happily promise him we'll go up, but the logic is bizarre.

I got an offer from PSG for my starting keeper. Rejected it as I didn't want to lose him. GK came to me and asked to leave, I told him that he wouldn't get the playing time at PSG that he wanted, which seemed a reasonable response since they have a 26-year-old Donnarumma as their starter. He then tells me, "I think I'll take my chances."

I did sell him after a second, improved bid, and bought a quality replacement, but that's the most delusional comment I've ever seen from one of my players...

  7. Are the changes to stamina working like they're supposed to be? I've played several matches recently where opposition players who were in "the red" stamina-wise are still sprinting and pressing late into matches.

Still having the issues with nearly every AI team using high-press tactics as well. I've faced two teams in the past season and a half that didn't use either Tiki-Taka or Gegenpress. I'm winning most of my matches, so that's not the problem, but it feels very repetitive, frustrating, and just plain unrealistic to face a full-bore press every single match. It's like no team has their own identity- I'm just playing against Gegenpress FC every time out.

It means you are doing a good job of bringing through talent. AI is largely rubbish at squad building, they let players get old, they get imbalanced, and the like. Typically we humans buy/develop wonderkids and other clubs will want those players.

I have a couple wonderkids, but my average squad age is 26. Most of my wanted players are in the 24-28 age range.

Probably not the right place for this but I would like to see the option, in future, to use transfer fees received to help pay off debts. I know this probably isn't how it works in real life but currently, I'm managing as Southend and we have £25m in debt as we're building a new stadium. My team is complete but if I sold a player for £1m it would be nice to have the option to, instead or adding it to my transfer budget, put it towards paying debt with the upfront amount received.

I've wondered if this goes on behind the scenes already. I'm managing as Sporting CP, who have substantial debts (€1.3 million in monthly repayments) and the board only allowed 30% of transfer revenue to be added to the transfer budget for the first three seasons. It was increased to 60% this season, with a message that the increase was due to our improved financial position. I'd also gotten a message last season that the board paid off some debts early.

Germany, as you can imagine, is absolutely horrible for this. Random 2* coaches turning up with a gegenpressing style and being horrible to play against. Mainz have just finished 4th in 2026/27 despite being predicted 14th, and they play a 4-4-2 with 2 wingers... absolutely bizarre witnessing a counter press with the 2 wide men being as wide as possible, but it's worked for them. Freiburg are usually really good at this too, then you've got the likes of Manuel Baum, Frank Kramer and of course, Christian Streich.

I've enjoyed my save in the German leagues, but the temptation to leave is growing with every season that passes.

I did a Wolfsburg save on FM21- definitely understand your frustration!

Very intensive gegenpress should not be possible for 90 minutes straight unless you have a team of extremely high stamina/work rate++ players.

This is my main frustration with the game right now. I'm playing as Sporting CP, and nearly every AI club use either a gegenpress or vertical tiki-taka style against us. Being one of the bigger sides, I'd have expected to face far more bus-parking and route one tactics, but it's just the opposite.

The Portuguese League is pretty top-heavy, and there are only 3-5 clubs (one of which is us) that should have the physical ability, technical skill, and squad depth to play like that consistently. I use a pass-and-move tactic with a slightly higher level of pressing and tempo, and my players can maintain that for around 75 minutes before needing to slow things down and see the match out. Yet I'm regularly seeing AI sides (who are just as low on stamina) continuing to press hard and sprint to the ball for the full 90.

I saw a lot of this on FM21 as well, but I will say that the FM22 match engine does appear to be improved, in that it does appear to punish those AI sides by causing them to leave defensive gaps that my team can (and do) exploit successfully.

On that theme, check Zealands channel, he's doing a save with Oriental Dragons, which is a Chinese-owned team in the lower leagues of Portugal. They have a club vision which includes bringing in Chinese players. I'm not sure, but In suspect they will generate Chinese or 2nd nationality Chinese newgens as well.

They're in the same division as my B team (playing as Sporting) and their first crop of newgens was all Chinese or Chinese-Portuguese.

  13. Playing as Sporting CP, only made a couple small transfers in for depth, and I'm first after 10 matches, with 36 goals scored, 2 conceded. I'm using a clean slate tactic with some elements of possession and vertical tiki-taka, on a balanced mentality, and regularly scoring 4-5 goals against most sides.

I know the Primeira Liga isn't that good outside of the top 4, but been a bit surprised how big the gulf is between the top sides and the rest.

Do you find FM22 too easy so far?

I've been over performing with my team so far but I'm only 7 games into the season

I've won 6 of 7 so far, but playing as Sporting CP, so I'd expect to beat most teams except Porto (haven't played yet) and Benfica (1-0 win) and haven't started the Champions League yet. Did win a match 5-1 where I was down a man for 40 minutes, though was already leading 3-1 when the player was sent off.
