Carlo Mazzone  ( Rome ,  19 March  1937  –  Ascoli Piceno ,  19 August  2023 ) was an  Italian football manager  .

He was known by the nickname  Sor Carletto  or  Sor Magara  due to his characteristic and strong  Roman accent . ^[1]  He holds the record for most bench games in  Serie A , with 792 games (797, including 5 play-offs), as well as the record for official appearances (1278) on the bench with Italian teams. In 2019, the new East stand of the Cino e Lillo Del Duca Stadium  in  Ascoli Piceno was named after him  , and in the same year he was inducted into the  Italian football Hall of Fame . ^[2]

The career that I am about to tell you about is a very classic career: you start from the bottom, without licenses and you play normally, with the simple and quick aim of having fun, with a single aim... to remember the great Carletto Mazzone by chasing his record of total benches, as per the title... and now, let's start the dancing, where will our Gaetano Giannusa end???

 

2023/24

D/C Series

We go to the cold Italian lands, where Italians mix with Germans, but compared to Sudtirol, here we are in the Italian part, with Virtus which as soon as I arrive sinks into the lower parts of the rankings, the team is not bad but is experiencing a difficult period, the January market is made up of the loan of the young Trevisan from Verona and a few exits which allow us to lower the wage bill so as to breathe a little, the team finds its amalgam again and we come close to making a sensational comeback in the playoffs.

 

 

 

2024/25

D/C Series

 

Having freed up the salary space, we are focusing on promising young players due to the regulations and on some old sea dogs in the category, with a beautiful duel against Luparense resolved only on the last day, which takes us straight to Serie C! I don't know if it was a lucky season, but from January onwards we practically made no more mistakes, freed from the commitment of the D'Italia Cup, and exited in the third round. The cups don't bring us luck, with two draws we are out of the Scudetto pool, but what do we care, we are C!

 

 

 

2025/26

Series C/A

 

Very hard, very hard year, in a moment of self-harm I give the DS full powers on how to manage the squad, and he makes a mess, including myself who don't understand the very hard impact with the C, I try to remedy it by changing a little something tactically and with a string of 5 victories we practically manage to save ourselves in March, risking in the end to play the playoffs and not making them for just one single point... a terrible season to say the least, but with a very sweet salvation

2026/27

Series C/A

 

A sporting miracle. There is no other way to define this year after the tribulations of last year, where we avoided the playouts by one point, so I am preparing a mix of young players taken from us and others on loan, mainly so as not to suffer, but the team every match that passes, stronger and stronger every month, until reaching the final sprint practically invincible, losing only the return leg, now useless, against Rimini in the playoff final, with an amazing series of useful results. Now the task will be difficult because Serie B is no joke, and we have basically remained a Serie D team in terms of structures and staff.

2027/28

B series

If last year was a sporting miracle, this year I don't know how to define it. With my team of observers I go looking for profiles suitable for the Serie B. but above all I look for loans in the Serie A teams who, if necessary, can make the entire squad make a leap in quality, and I find them in Cerri, Letizia and Di Vaio who they will build a trident capable of making the defenses tremble, behind the goalkeeper Bellagambi to form a wall and Riccio and Perin in front of the defense to play it immediately on the counterattack, but it is the compactness of the group that has made the difference, a group that has united in the rush final giving Bolzano and the whole of Trentino Alto Adige an incredible promotion to Serie A!
