Blarney
Match 26 So one thing we have noticed is for some reason we give up a lot of goals either late in the first half or in extra time. We're still winning so it's not like it's a huge concern, but it is concerning. Late in the game it's possible because I'm substituting players out it's just because of quality... but it's worth keeping an eye on.
Blarney
FA Trophy Fourth Round We beat Gloucester at home 1-0 last month so we knew their quality and that we were in for a tough match. They definitely upped their game this time around but we met their intensity and got away with the 4-3 win. We had the 3-0 lead heading to the end of the first half on goals by Jason Law and a brace by Elliott but Gloucester got one back to make it 3-1. Then they scored another late in the 2nd half to make it 3-2 before we responded just seconds later and put the game away. Scunthorpe is moving on. Blarney
Match 28 Not a very exciting match. We got off 6 shots, Banbury got off 4. We controlled possession but just failed to take our chances. But it's still not a loss.... so the unbeaten streak continues.
Blarney
Match 29 Back to our winning ways with one from Poulter and Roberts each. Hereford only managed to get off 5 shots with 1 on target. We held a 2-1 possession advantage and controlled the tempo of the match pretty easily.
Blarney
Match 30 Southport got off 2 shots, 1 on target but it hit the back of the net. Lukily we got off 15, 9 on target with 2 hitting going in. On top of that we held a just over 75-25 possession advantage.
Blarney
Match 31 We've already beat Bishop's twice this season so this makes the trifecta. We absolutely pounded them with 20 shots, 10 on target and 5 scored. Domination.
Blarney
January This was a very busy month but we came through with flying colors. A Fourth Round win the FA Trophy and 7 wins, 1 draw in league play. We now have a 20 points cushion at the top -- 30 points to 7th place. We're breaking records now! 2nd in goals scored, 1st in goals conceded. That's a winning combination. The team is flying high, Poulter has fallen off a little bit but the injury keeping him out for just over a month didn't help.
Blarney
BBC Humberside interviews Richie O'Byrne Bill Decker: So first congratulations are in order for your National League record breaking 31 unbeaten. Richie O'Byrne: Thanks, the lads have worked really hard and it's nice to have a little recognition for them. Bill Decker: You're sitting atop the table with 81 points. Chorley is in 2nd place with 61 points. By our math that's a 20 point lead with just 3 months left on the schedule. Are you ready to call this over and declare yourselves champions? Richie O'Byrne: Are you trying to jinx us? Okay, look... are we in a good spot? Of course. Is the season over? No. So we're not champions yet. We haven't earned anything. That's not taking anything away from what we've done, because the boys are out there working their.... backsides off. We're doing everything right, right now. But that just means we can't let up. There's always something to work for. FIrst and foremost we want automatic promotion so we need to keep moving forward for that. Bill Decker: And breaking records? Richie O'Byrne: We will or we won't. I don't concern myself with that. It's sort of like a lot of people have goals set for them at their work. But if you concentrate on the goals then you're not concentrating on just doing your job. Reaching goals is met by doing your job right... or it's not. If you're concentrating on just meeting goals then you're not doing your job correctly. So whether we break records or don't.... we don't control that. We just control what we do every day on the pitch. Bill Decker: Has there been any conversation about finishing the season unbeaten? Richie O'Byrne: No and there won't be... at least not until there's maybe 1 game left. Bill Decker: You have a very specific way about you. The way you manage and the way your club performs on the pitch. You don't mix things up very much. And you have a very ethereal attitude about things. Most things seem very black and white in your way of explaining things. Richie O'Byrne: Is that a compliment or...? I think most things are pretty black and white, until they're not. Do you like that answer? (laughs) As far as the way I manage I think most managers have a very specific way about things. I zig or zag when needed but mostly my job is to know my teams strength and to play to that strength, not to react to what other clubs do. I want them to react to us. I want to control the tempo of the match. If we do that then that means we're playing our game... not our opponents. Bill Decker: Fair enough. So I know you don't like these questions very much but you know we have to ask. There are obviously financial constraints at Scunthorpe. You haven't really made a lot of moves to improve the club this season but looking ahead, do you have the quality to keep being competitive, especially if you do get promoted to the National League? Richie O'Byrne: We've made enough moves to be leading the league by 20 points at the moment so like I have said before it's not how many moves you make it's the quality of those you get done. Am I kidding myself into thinking that if we took this club to the National League next season that we're automatic promotion contenders? No. But that's not my concern at the moment, either. My concern is to finish this season as best we can and then get told what I have to operate with next season and make that work. Bill Decker: So are you expecting the board to put more cash into the club if you get promoted? Richie O'Byrne: I'm expecting to get told what I have to work with and make it work. That's my job. Bill Decker: Do you think Michelle and the board share your views on the club? Are they open to doing what's necessary to be successful? Richie O'Byrne: I think you'd have to ask Michelle that question. Do I think Michelle cares about Scunthorpe? I don't think she would have bought the club if she didn't care, nor would she have been involved with the club for the past 20 years. As far as doing what's needed to be successful.... that's something we will discuss going forward as I have my ideas and I'm sure they have theirs. But before you ask again.... I'll work with whatever they give me. Bill Decker: Thanks for your time, Richie. Richie O'Byrne: It's always a pleasure. Blarney
FA Trophy Fifth Round It took penalty shots to get through but we're advancing to the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy. We probably got a bit lucky in this game if we're being honest. Woking put 13 shots up against us and 12 of them were on target. So either luck.... or outstanding keeper work. Probably a bit of both and we'll take it.
Blarney
Match 33 Lucky 2 games in a row? Yeah, maybe... or once again a superb job in goal. Chorley is a good team, 2nd in the league when we played this match. We gave up 20 shots in this game and 10 of them were on target... against just 6 and 4 of our own. Yet we won 2-1. Blarney
Match 35 Curzon is sitting near the bottom of the table... a table we're dominating. And yes we won 1-0.... and held Curzon to 3 shots with none on goal... but it's not like we dominated them in this match. It just goes to show that you still have to show up and play the game. There have been several matches this season that if just one thing went the other way, we may have lost 6 or 7 games rather than won them, this game included. Blarney
February A nice simple month after the craziness of January. The big win was in the FA Trophy. Getting in to the Quarterfinals is a big deal to us right now. There were a couple of other positives from the month...... A playoff spot is secured and... A record points total for Scunthorpe. So maybe the fight for the top spot is over but that doesn't mean there's not some intrigue left on the schedule. Blarney
FA Trophy Quarterfinal Solihull gave us everything and our defense stood strong. Blarney
Match 38 The dream is over. The current #2 team in the league cracked us. We lost. In all seriousness it had to happen. I thought we were the best team in the league (and in real life they are as well) but going on this crazy run was not something we dreamed would happen. There were a LOT of games that could have gone either way -- I think we snatched 6 or 7 wins from defeat this season... but we just kept winning. This late in the season though... you sort of just wanted to run the table. I'm sad it's over.

Blarney
Match 40 Despite the fact we've beaten Scarborough 1-0 in each of our last 2 matches versus them this season, they've played us as hard as anybody. Blarney
March We lost Fitz for the season after our 37th match. This is a big loss since he was probably our best player on the pitch. Our backup is "competent" but certainly not at Fitz's level. Luckily our defense as a whole has been very good but with the FA Trophy still in play.... I hate that this happened. That's it. The championship is ours. All the hard work, training, effort and passion played off and culminated in a very impressive title run. The FA Trophy still is in play with the Semi-Final coming up next month... but we're going to relish winning the title for now and start looking ahead to next season. Blarney
A Few Changes in the Club We signed a few lads from our youth recruitment, which was okay... certainly not great but we did nab a few guys that might be okay/good. 16-year old Amarri Bemrose is a central-midfielder with strong mentals. Weak-ish on the technical side at the moment but could develop into a decent player. Fred Moke is a 16-year old center-back with good physicals, good tackling and technique. Segun Umoh is just 15-years old and plays as a left-defender or wing-back. He has a long way to go to develop into something but his mentals are pretty good. 16-year old Gary Ellis can play as a winger or striker.... but his finishing leaves a lot to be desired. He does have great fitness and decent acceleration and technical abillity. He could develop into a competent left-wing player.
Blarney
New Signing Bettache is what you would call a "well-traveled" player... but is a definite upgrade on our club so we took the chance and grabbed him when his agent made it known he was looking for a new club. Blarney
April A month of games that didn't matter as we had already wrapped up the championship. So we mostly played youngsters and backups.... and still managed to get a draw in every match. Except the one that mattered.... the semi-final of the FA Trophy -- which we won. It's on to Wembley! It was a magical season. We're up... and so is Spennymoor Town. South Shields, Chorley and Scarborough all had an excellent seasons and we wish them luck going forward. Chorley's attacking stats were just incredible but our defense was really the difference this season as we gave up just 39 goals for the year. Our passing and possession also helped our championship push as well. It was just a really good season. We really didn't have any standout players, it was a complete team effort this season. Fitzsimons was very good.... but our overall defense was just smothering. Attacking Stats Defending Stats

Blarney
Player Movement In The 18-year old Benjamin won't be a starter right away, he's here for dpeth but could turn into a quality player down the line. 18-year old Adam Berry's best position isn't center-mid but that's where we need him and he has the ability to play there. He'll get his opportunity to start. We desperately needed someone out on the left as a defender and 18-year old Luis Brown will take over that role to start the season. Fitzsimons did a fine job for us last year but he actually got worse as the season went on.... and he was injured for several months to finish the year as well. So we went looking for someone new and found 18-year old Alexei Rojas Fedorushchenko - who was released by Arsenal. He has a long way to grow but right now he's the best we got. We proved last year that even without a top-notch keeper we could be a top defending team. We'll need that this season as well. 18-year old Kacurri will either be a starter on the defensive line or a first choice backup. He has some skills but like a lot of our players needs to grow. 17-year old Kamara will take over on the left wing from the departed Wilson. We really like the look of 18-year old Jack Moorhouse who will take over as our center-attacking midfielder. We're not entirely sure why Man United let him go, but we're very thankful they did. Out We really needed a cash injection and moving Scales and Jordan for 275k is a nice start. We also sold Cameron Wilson at the end of last season for 25k. On top of that we let the contracts of 6 others fall off the books to save a total of 2200 per week. We made over the team to start the season and lowered our average age from 28 to 22 years old. Now we just have to hope that at least a couple of our youngsters develop into something.

Blarney
Season Preview Pretty lofty expectation for a club that fell as quickly as we did. Yes, we ran away with the Vanarama National League North last year.... but I would have liked the board to suggest a mid-table finish this year and then hopefully exceed those expectations. Our financial situation is not good.... not good at all. So the pundits think we're a top contender this season.... right along with where the board wants us. Once again none of my players picked for any hardware at the end of the season. That's fine, we like proving them wrong. This will be our starting formation for the season and the players that will take those roles. We are soooo young this year compared to last. I hope that doesn't bite me in the rear and we can stay competitive while we're learning to work together.
Blarney
FA Trophy Final **just realized I never posted the results of the final from last season** What a run it has been and it culminates in winning the FA Trophy in very convincing fashion. Southend had nothing in response to our overwhelming attack and harassing defense. They managed only 7 shots all game long and not one of them challenged for goal. Meanwhile we held a 63% possession advantage and hit them with 7 shots on goal with 3 going in and then another penalty shot in as well for the 4-0 victory. People may say we had a pretty easy run to the finals... we didn't face any top team from the National League during our run... but you can only play who's in front of you. In the end.... we won and that's all that matters. What a magical season.
Blarney
Questions from The Athletic You had a very successful first campaign and earned promotion with relative ease from the National League North. Where do you see yourself stacking up in the National League this season? Promotion bound again? I wouldn't say anything came easily last season, that's taking away from the other clubs. We had to go out and earn everything we got. There were some really good clubs we beat last season and they deserve all our respect for making us bring it every time we took that pitch. We're going to be in that same position this season. There are some good clubs in this league and if we don't go out there and play our game each and every time out, we're going to see just how good many of them are. I don't expect anything to come easily. As far as how we stack up, I guess we'll see. Ask me again at the end of the season and I'll tell you where we will end up at. That's fair but you have to have some idea of where you see your club? Do you think you have enough to make a playoff push this season or is it a case of trying to avoid relegation or somewhere in the middle? I see you're going to push for an answer. (laughs) I'll never bet against my boys. If we go out and play our game then I expect we'll be more competitive than not, that's what we train for. We certainly don't go out looking to lose. But we still have to go out and give everything we've got and if we don't then we're going to be on the wrong end of the table at the end of the season. Reports out of Scunthorpe are that the club lost money just about every month last season and are facing financial difficulties once again. Does this prevent you from making moves you need to make to remain competitive? And are you concerned about the long-term feasibility of running the club? Every time I get asked a question like this I answer is pretty much the same. It's not my job to worry about the financial state of the club. There's nothing I can do about it. If I had Arsenal or Manchester City money I'd make Arsenal or Manchester City moves... but nobody down at this level does so it's not like I'm facing Arsenal or Manchester City, nor do I need to spend like I am. However, I'd look pretty dumb if I sat here and said it didn't matter because obviously the more money we have available the more moves we could make. Every club at this level is saying the same thing. But my job isn't to worry about it. It's to take the players out on that pitch and make them the absolute very best they can be. And if they get good enough that some big money club comes calling then we make the best deal possible for us and that's how we fix things financially. That fixes things long term. One last question and it's somewhat personal. Looking back to when you were hired last season, did you truly think that being a newly hired manager that you'd see this sort of success this early? Our views of success must be very different. I haven't accomplished anything yet. It's not like I'm the first manager to take a club and earn promotion in the first season, at least I assume it's been done before. And even if it hadn't, it's not like I've still accomplished anything. I've been at this for a year. That's it. I hate being pessimistic because I'm normally not but we could go out this year and give it all back... and then we won't be talking about success. So no, I don't think I've done anything.... I don't think the club has done anything. Not yet. And our success won't even be measured on what we do this season either. If we go out and for some reason don't earn promotion then we're not failures. If we go out and earn promotion then we're not necessarily successful. It just means we're taking the steps we need to get to where we want to be. Certainly winning equals success much more than losing does, don't get me wrong, but a year or two or playing well.... I wouldn't measure success in such a short time. That's just me.
Blarney
August Schedule Match 1 Match 2 Match 3 Match 4 Match 5 Table What a difference a year makes. We lose 1 game all last season and we lose 3 in the first month of this season. I can't say as I'm really surprised because I'm not. I expected there to be growing pains and didn't share in the sentiments of the board and bettors that thought we were going to fly through this season and be a playoff contender right away. I'm not saying it still couldn't happen but we have to learn to work together as a team first... and that might take 2 or 3 months to work out. In the meantime our job is to tread water. If we can maintain and mid-table hold here then when we get "hot" - assuming we do - then we can make a run at the top of the table. We just can't afford to fall too far back. So far our defense has not been as good as it was last season and again that doesn't really surprise me too much but it's something that we hope to shore up. Also our attacking has been a real problem. We had one really good game where Poulter got the hat-trick but other than that he hasn't even scored in any other game. This is something we'll have to watch and hope to fix as well.
Blarney
September Schedule Match 6 Match 7 Match 8 Match 9 Match 10 Table What a difference a month makes. Take out the 1 game where we gave up 4 goals and we didn't allow more than 1 in any other game. Our defense certainly has started to figure things out.... at least for now. We even beat the "top" team in the league 2-1. We obviously still have a lot of growth left to do and I expect we're still going to have our "downs" with our "ups" but at least for now this month was more of what we're looking for. Blarney
New Player Jordan Reittie I'd been looking for a potential long-term replacement to Poulter as was actually approached by an agent saying Reittie was available for transfer and he didn't cost much either. Blarney
October Schedule Not bad. Not bad. After 1 bad month and then 1 good month we settled in to what could be described as one not bad month... really more of what we expected honestly. 6 league matches with 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. Match 11 Match 12 Match 13 Match 14 Match 15 Match 16 Table Up 2 spots to #6 this month. It's obviously still very early - not even halfway home yet - but the mid-table is very very tight. A win here or there or a loss here or there can make a tremendous difference this early so it's important to keep pushing and pushing to do the best we can in each match. Blarney
I don't know what's going on, FM24 has become unplayable again with the amount of times that the game is crashing. I thought I had it fixed when I deleted all my files and rebooted the game, it has been working okay for about a week and then today it just started doing it again and has deleted my file back to before this month started. I could go back to my saves on FM 23 but that's from last season which means everything I've done so far this year would have to be redone. I'm going to work on it some more today and see if I can figure out what's wrong without deleting everything but for now it seems that FM 24 does not like me or I'm acquiring some sort of bug and until I fix that I have to pause what I'm doing or go back to FM23 -- which I never had issues with. Everything I did with support last time didn't work and they looked over my files and system and coudn't find anything wrong and their ultimate fix was delete everything and start over..... so we'll see what comes of it this time. Game month, so basically all of October. I had 3 save files and they're all gone, which is all the data from when I switched to FM24 in game. Was using FM23 previously and just decided to "upgrade" because I had been using it sporadically in a private save for the past couple of weeks and wasn't having any issues. But as soon as I ported this save, all of a sudden I started having issues again and files getting deleted along with the game crashing multiple times like it was my last save using FM24. I'd have to basically wipe clear everything that's happened the past month and go back to FM23 if I can't figure out what's going on.
Blarney
I honestly can't decide if the football Gods are pulling me towards Notts or pushing me away. I start with Oldham and the Gods give me an opportunity to take over Notts -- pulling me back to them -- just to have that save ruined by FM24..... fine you're pushing me away. I take over Scunthorpe and they ruin that save.... okay are you pulling me back to Notts? Or maybe they're just telling me that I'm not made out for this game and should just wait for FM 25 and the reboot that is coming to get back into this? I've spent hours randomly deleting files and trying to figure out what is wrong, even started up a new FM24 save and within an hour it crashed. Hey at least I'm finally watching the 2nd season of Welcome to Wrexham while I'm messing with this. I almost don't mind that they beat my Notts to win the league last season. You can't watch this "documentary" and not feel for that club and that town.... plus it's Ryan Reynolds, you can't hate him.
