Football Club Volendam (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌvoːlənˈdɑm]) is a professional football club based in Volendam, Netherlands. They play in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football from the 2022–23 season following promotion. Nicknamed "de Palingboeren", the club was founded as Victoria in 1920, changed its name to RKSV Volendam in 1923 and emerged as an exclusively professional club, FC Volendam, in 1977, following a split from its parent club. The team plays its home matches in the 6,984-capacity Kras Stadion, where it has been based since 1975.

The club has a reputation as the heen-en-weer club ("the back-and-forth club") due to its numerous promotions and relegations between the first and second tiers of Dutch football. They have achieved ten promotions to the Eredivisie; a record.  Volendam also reached two KNVB Cup finals – in 1957–58 and 1994–95 – which ended in losses to two Rotterdam-based clubs, Sparta and Feyenoord, respectively.

My fictional manager is the grandson of former legendary Dutch manager Rinus Michels. Michels jnr born in Volendam young Rinus will be attempting to lead the club to beyond their best ever 6th placed finish in the Eredivisie. 

Rinus Michels jnr will be hoping to turn The Other Oranje in to a successful Eredivisie club in the long term. But first we need to avoid relegation back to the Eerste Divisie.

Eredivisie 2022-2023 

Groningen 2-2 FC Volendam 

My first competitive game in charge ended in a 2-2 draw despite us leading 2-0 after 50 minutes. I had decided to line us up in a 4231 shape although we are working towards a 433 system. The media have us favourites to finish bottom of the Eredivise this season with our board wanting us to bravely fight against relegation this season. 

Groningen our hosts were clear favourites for the game but we matched them all over the park gaining more momentum which saw us race in to a 2-0 lead (Murkin 44, Veerman50) but unfortunately we couldn't hang on to win the game. 

FC Volendam 2-0 N.E.C 

The Kras Stadion with an attendance of over 6,000 saw us get our first win of the season in front of our home fans when N.E.C visited. I chose to go with the 4231 formation that got us a point at Groningen. We pressed our visitors aggressively from the kick off and like last week we stormed in to a 2-0 lead with Henk Veerman our centre forward netting in the 22nd and 38th minute. 

Unlike against Groningen we kept N.E.C at bay limiting them to just 3 shots on target to take all 3 points. I am pleased with both the result and performance using the 4231 however like I said above we are working towards a 433 system that is definitely a more Dutch type system working on a Vertical Tiki Taka style of play. I am currently tinkering with it with Jong Volendam and the Under 18 squad. 

PSV Eindoven 3-0 FC Volendam 

A big test for us in Eindoven went pear shaped with the Dutch giants putting us under a lot of pressure throughout the game. We managed to keep them at bay until just before half time when Luuk de Jong scored the first of his 2 goals of the day. 

Although we had a poor performance I have seen enough in the previous 2 games to think we can compete to stay in this division which allows us to build. 

We have little in terms of finances but we are debt free and through good financial management we can take the club forward. My aim is to rely heavily on our own youth development system over the transfer market.

The Switch To 433 

So after testing a 433 with the Under 18's and Jong Volendam squads I have introduced the system to the first team squad. The Oranje Revolution 433 is the system that I will be using going forward this season. Its more of a Dutch way of playing however the new match engine got me thinking about a new system that one of my favourite real life players would thrive in. The player is Frank Rijkaard who I think would suit the role of a Segundo Volante in a deeper midfield strata providing both cover for the defence and support for the attack, so I am setting myself a challenge of finding / developing the new Frank Rijkaard. I always like to use the B team and Youth team to develop new tactics before introducing to the first team so I can watch how the system plays out. I want to have options in my midfield set up so we are not a one dimensional team thus training different roles to the young players gives us more flexibility within the club. 

The move to the 433 system is producing a better quality style of play so far and we are sat in 7th place in the table after our first 7 games.

How long do you think it would take to turn a team like FC Volendam in to the New Ajax......dominating the Dutch League whist being a consistent Champions League team. Also in terms of Scouting Network and Youth Development on #FM23 ? Youth development is going to be a main thing within the game.

In terms of facilities maybe 5/6 years if you don't run into money issues. I would say around the same for the league if you recruit well + have good player development.
