March 2008

The season got under way with a home tie against Dinamo Stavropol, and we began well. It took us a few chances to get our bearings right, but on 33 Gorkhov finally found the net to put us ahead. A fantastic strike from left back Kulak doubled our lead early in the second half, but within two minutes Kuzmin had pulled a goal back for the visitors. We kept up our assault, and our two-goal advantage was restored twenty minutes from the end thanks to a second goal from Gorkhov. Busurin came on and added a further two as we ran out 5-1 victors.

Our first away match of the season was at Volgar, and we started confidently. Kulik gave us the lead after 15 minutes, and we had a few opportunities to extend the lead. As the game progressed Volgar started to get back into the match, and we were defending desperately. We couldn’t quite hold out, and we had to settle for a point when Nikolaev equalised three minutes from time.

April 2008

We began the month with a home tie against Khimki who had started the season well. We created all the running though, and just before half time Gorokhov gave us the lead. We kept going in the second half, and on 62 Umerov doubled the lead. Khimki had Shishkin sent off late on, and we kept up our good start to the season.

A trip to Rotor was next up for us. We continued to look impressive, and late goals in both halves from Gorokhov and Kulik gave us a good 2-0 victory.

Metallurg Krasnoyarsk came to visit, and with eight minutes gone Gorokhov had us ahead. But we were caught on the break on the half hour, and Korchagin drew the visitors level on the half hour mark. It was a tight game after that, but seventeen minutes from time Shevchenko restored our lead, and two minutes from time Gorokhov made sure of the three points.

The wheels finally came off as we went to Tom. They put us under pressure early on, and in the five minutes before half time both Makhaev and Kiselev scored for our hosts. They had Rashevskiy sent off just after the hour, but our consolation only came in stoppage time through Busurin as we lost for the first time this season.

The trip to high-flying Ural also started well for us, and just before half time Gorokhov squeezed us ahead. Ten minutes after the break Avdeev struck an equaliser, and we collapsed after that; Kozlov scoring the winner with thirteen minutes remaining.

An early goal from Bely gave Kristall Smolensk a 1-0 victory at our place as our month ended with three consecutive defeats.

Things have just started to hit us recently, and it’s how we react to this that will determine whether or not we end up in a relegation dogfight. I’m hopeful that we can bounce back, but it won’t be easy.

May-June 2008

We began the month with a home tie against Mashuk. There were chances at both ends, but neither side could score, and it ended 0-0.

We travelled to struggling Dinamo Peterburg, and with ten minutes gone Dumanskiy had us ahead with his first goal for the club. Kulik doubled the lead on the half hour, and Gorokhov scored a third just after the restart. Umerov caught Dinamo on the break for a fourth, and although Cherepanav pulled back two goals late on, the win was already in the bag.

Gorokhov had us ahead at home to Metallurg Lipetsk early on, but ten minutes later Voronkov scored an equaliser, and we had to settle for a point.

Kulik had us ahead after just four minutes at Spartak Nalchik. He got his second eight minutes from the end and we had another good win.

The home tie with Anzhi got off to a perfect start, with Kulik putting us head after just 90 minutes. It was tight after that, but we kept pushing, and four minutes from time Busurin got a second. Anzhi got a consolation with the last kick of the game as Saveljev scored from a free kick.

We didn’t play very well at Amkar. Vasiljev scored after six minutes, and two further goals from Uzdenov condemned us to a 3-0 defeat.

Gaz-Gaz came to visit next, and again we failed to turn up. Kandalintsev put them ahead after 17 minutes, and we never really looked like getting back into the game. Kolesnichenko grabbed a second at the end of the second period.

The final game of the month was a collapse at Arsenal Tula. Vasiljev got the ball rolling after 32 minutes, and ten minutes later Sviridov got a second. Klimov hit a third early in the second half, and further goals from Sviridov and Gun’ko saw us end on the wrong side of a walloping.

June saw one match played ahead of the European Championships. It was a trip to Orel and we were on the back foot for most of the game. But somehow we held firm, and seven minutes before the break Gorokhov put us ahead with our first meaningful attack. We started the second half well, but Orel soon got into their stride again, and on 65 equalised through Kulikov. Four minutes later Frolov put them ahead, and in the last minute Lebedev added a very fluky third.

We started the month well, and that is the primary reason that we are in the relatively good position that we find ourselves in. But with one goal scored, and thirteen conceded, in the last four games, things are starting looking to look dodgy.

Midseason break 2008

With the European Championships taking place, I was able to spend a bit of time focusing on the transfer market. I persuaded defensive midfielder Konstantin Bel’kov to join on a free transfer, and Bosnian midfielder Ahmed Hosic signed a full-time contract. I also used my knowledge of the Polish market to bring in two other players. I went back to Radomsko to take Serbian goalkeeper Vojin Prole, and Togolose international defender Lantame Ouadja joined on a free transfer from Wisla.

We were also informed of the fifth round draw for the Russian Cup. We have a home tie, and will face Neftekhimik in late August.

July 2008

We got back to action with a home tie against Neftekhimik. It was a tight match, and was eventually settled by a Gorokhov strike early in the second half.

We were under pressure from the start as we travelled to Torpedo-Metallurg. Their breakthrough came ten minutes before the break through Beletskiy, and in first half injury time Bracamonte doubled the advantage. Kulik pulled a goal back early in the second half, only for Petukhov to make it 3-1 on 64. Kulik scored a consolation in stoppage time, but we had already lost the game.

We welcomed high-flyers Fakel to our place, and within three minutes Kulik had us ahead. We defended well for much of the game afterwards, and on the hour Dumanskiy headed home a corner to double the lead. Gorokhov added a third late on, and we had an excellent victory.

A trip to table-toppers Kuban was never going to be easy for us, and we found ourselves on the back foot. They were just too strong for us, and goals from Sergey Smirnov and Salnikov saw us slump to a 2-0 defeat.

Andrey Filimonov was loaned out for three months to Svetogorets ahead of our trip to Dinamo Stavropol. We weren’t at our best, and ten minutes into the second half Mitin had the home side ahead. We struggled to get back into the game, but in the penultimate minute Busurin struck to give us a point.

Five minutes into our home tie with Volgar we were behind to a Rozhkov penalty. We tried to get back into the game, but to no avail, and we again slipped to defeat.

The final game of the month took us to Khimki. Kulik scored at either end of the first half, and Shevchenko added a third before the break from the penalty spot. Gorokhov added a fourth midway through the second period, and Busurin completed a 5-0 rout in injury time.

It’s not been pretty, but we’re still getting the occasional result, and that’s keeping us neatly in the mid-table section. We still have 18 games to play, but I think we can achieve our aim of avoiding relegation.

August 2008

We began the month with a home tie against Tom, and with nine minutes gone Gorokhov had us ahead. We failed to push on after that though, and goals from Kiselev and Shamil Lakhiyalov inside six second half minutes condemned us to defeat.

A home tie with Rotor followed, and with just fifteen minutes gone Mysin had them ahead. Jevgeni Smirnov grabbed a second at the very end of the first half, and the visitors even had the luxury of seeing Prole save a late Yermolaev penalty.

We played well for much of the game at Metallurg Krasnoyarsk, and on 27 Kulik headed us into the lead. But we couldn’t quite hold on, and seven minutes from time Korchagin scored an equaliser; and we had to settle for a draw.

We were pretty poor as we travelled to Mashuk, with Degtyarev and Zangiev scoring in the last ten minutes before the break. Alexeev and Degtyarev added further efforts towards the end of the game as we crashed 4-0.

Promotion-chasing Ural came to visit, and with twenty minutes gone Kozlov had them ahead. We battled back though, and just after the restart Gorokhov levelled things up. Kozlov restored the lead on 65, and it appeared that we would lose again. But in the third minute of injury time Dumanskiy rose to earn us a point.

Marat Valiev was loaned out for Torpedo Volzhskiy for three months prior to our trip to Kristall Smolensk. We weren’t at our best in the game, and fell to a Yakovlev strike midway through the second period.

We hosted Neftekhimik in the fifth round of the Russian Cup, but we were poor again and two goals from Megreladze had us 2-0 down at half time. Worse was to follow when Gorokhov was sent off just after the restart. We actually looked better with ten men, and although Busurin pulled a goal back from the penalty spot ten minutes from time we were out of the competition.

The last match of the month was a trip to Metallurg Lipetsk, and we were on the back foot after just two minutes when we conceded a penalty that Voronkov put away. Kulik equalised on 25, but a brace from Ogordnik had the home side 3-1 up at the break. Os’kin added a fourth twenty minutes from time, and Ogrodnik completed his hatrick five minutes from the end.

We’ve had a terrible month, gaining only two points from a possible 21, as well as going out at the first hurdle of the Cup. We find ourselves just two points above the relegation zone, and we really need a win from somewhere.

September 2008

Struggling Dinamo Peterburg came to visit, and after a quiet start, Gorokhov had us ahead. Within a minute though Polyakov was given too much space to equalise and they were level. Kulik scored a wonderful strike on 63 to restore our lead, and Gorokhov sealed a much-needed win eight minutes later.

We struggled early on at Anzhi, but we defended well, and in the second half started to cause them a few problems. Ten minutes from time Gorokhov scored, and we had another victory.

A tight game ensued at home to Spartak Nalchik, but poor finishing kept the game goalless for a long time. Six minutes from the end the visitors had Yegorov sent off, and two minutes later we won the game when Stepanyan deflected a Nikishin shot into his own net.

A number of first teamers were unavailable for the home tie against Amkar, and ten minutes before the break one of the reserve players, Nikishin, put us ahead. Amkar equalised soon after the break through Solovjov, although Kulik restored our lead seven minutes later with a beauty. A minute later though terrible defending allowed Solovjov to equalise, and although Amkar had Pervushin sent off on the hour, we had to settle for a point.

A trip to Gaz-Gaz was our last game of the month. Busurin fired us ahead after ten minutes, but five minutes before half time Kolesnichenko equalised. Busurin scored two further tap-ins in the early past of the second half to complete his hatrick and put us in control. Trofimov was sent off for the home side with four minutes to play, and in the last few minutes Busurin scored another brace, sandwiching a goal from Kulik, as we ran out 6-1 victors.

What a turnaround. We’ve claimed thirteen points from a maximum fifteen this month, and we now look like we’re going to be safe. With just six games left to play this season we find ourselves nine points above the relegation zone, although we won’t be resting until the mathematics assures our safety.

October-November 2008

We began the final run-in with a home tie against Orel. We started well, but faded quickly, and with 27 minutes gone Pushkarev had the visitors ahead. We couldn’t find a way back, and fell to a 1-0 defeat.

An early goal from Fornalik put Arsenal Tula in charge at our place, and five minutes before the break Eugeny Kaleshin added a second. We never really competed and fell to yet another defeat.

We started well at home to Torpedo-Metallurg, and on the half hour Kulik headed us into the lead. We looked good for a victory, but sixteen minutes from time Mavsesjan scored an equaliser and we had to settle for a draw.

The trip to Fakel was a cracking tie. Gorokhov had us ahead after four minutes, with within 120 seconds Budko had levelled things up. Kulik put us back in front with twenty minutes played, but before the break Amirov scored an equaliser. Fakel turned the screw in the second half, and Kovalenko scored twice in the first seven minutes to put them firmly in charge. Gorokhov pulled a goal back, pouncing on a goalkeeping error, twenty minutes from time, and when Tarasov was sent off with four minutes to play we had hope of finding an equaliser. But it wasn’t to be, and in injury time Kovalenko completed his hatrick to wrap up a 5-3 victory.

We were absolutely awful on our trip to Neftekhimik. Gadjiev put them ahead after 9 minutes, and midway through the half a Bakulin penalty and another strike from Gadjiev had them 3-0 up. Megreladze added a fourth just before half time, and on 72 Gadjiev wrapped up his hatrick.

The final game of the season was at home to champions Kuban. Sergey Smirnov had them ahead after seven minutes, but Gorokhov equalised eleven minutes later. Salnikov restored the lead for the visitors within four minutes, and by half time Sergey Smirnov had added two further goals to complete his hatrick. Vladimir Kulik pulled a goal back soon after the restart only for Sergey Smirnov to grab his fourth of the afternoon. Bel’kov made it 5-3 on the hour with his first goal for the club, but Sergey Smirnov got his fifth of the game seven minutes from time to wrap up a 6-3 victory.

The run-in wasn’t great, and if it hadn’t been for our fantastic run of results in September, we’d probably have been relegated. Still, we survived, and we can count the season as a success. It’s going to be difficult to build on it though because we’ve got no money and the Bosman rule doesn’t apply in Russia.

Unless we can play the loan system again, it’s going to be difficult to see how we can improve on this season. Apart from Kulak, we’ve really had no-one else who’s put in the performances, with loanees Dumanskiy and Gorokhov doing themselves proud. It’s something to think about over the next few weeks.

Preseason 2009

I had spent November and the early part of December trying to decide how I was going to keep Znamya Truda outside the relegation zone. But I was offered the job at Slovak Second Division side SKP Devin, and I decided to jump ship. They’re halfway through their season and they’re in a good position at the winter break.

The club play at the 11000-capacity stadium of Dubravka in the capital Bratislava, and there’s even room for 3200 fans to sit down. There was a little bit of money to spend ahead of the second half of the season, and I set about deciding how best to spend it.

The first thing that struck me was the lack of backroom staff available to me, and so I first set about changing that. I raided Vranov for their scout Jan Kral, and an assistant manager, Stefan Hivko. Slavadoran Raúl Orellana joined the coaching staff, and Czech physio Martin Held also joined.

On the playing front, the lack of depth in the defence troubled me. So in came youngster Oleg Noskov on a free transfer from Licartovce, Peter Cvirik for £12,000 from Puchov, Jaroslav Vajda for £14,000 from Podbrezova and Adrian Ceman from Senec for a fee of £16,000. Also coming in was experience midfielder Vladislav Zvora, who’ll also take on a coaching role, for £26,000 from Petrzalka and Mozambiquan striker Ricardo Sarangue came in from Czech club Ceske Budejovice for £45,000.

February 2009

My first game in charge was at home to Dun. Streda, and after a quiet first half hour we took the lead through Stano. Six minutes later Pis doubled the lead with a well-taken free kick, and although we could have scored more, we settled for a 2-0 win.

My first away game was at Licartovce. We dominated throughout, but in the end, all we had to show for it was Ricardo Sarangue’s first goal for the club, and a 1-0 win.

I had initially thought that we would not really be involved in the promotion race, but such is the way that we’ve played in the first two games that, combined with other results, I think we might be able to put together a challenge. It’s not going to be easy though, and I won’t be too disappointed if we don’t do it.

March 2009

The month began with a trip to Banska Bystrica, and with just 30 seconds gone we found ourselves behind to a Krocko strike. We struggled to get back into the game, and just after half time Bednar doubled the lead. Karney added a third in the last ten minutes, and we were brought back down to earth.

Basement club Verke Levare came to our place, but we had the sending off of Minarech on 32 to thank for our victory. Three minutes later Kralik pounced on a save to put us into the lead, and midway through the second half Sarangue doubled the lead for a good win.

Six minutes into our home tie with Humenne we were up against ten men when Brisuda was sent off. We took our time to get going, and it was only in the latter part of the first half that we threatened. Three minutes before the break Sarangue struck to put us in front, and he added a second just before the hour.

The trip to table-toppers Presov went well for us, with both sides causing problems, and goalkeepers and defenders on top. It looked like ending 0-0, but with a minute left to play we allowed Nikulin through to win the game for the home side.

A mixed bunch of results for us this season, but we’ve still got an outside chance of promotion, and we’ll be doing our best to have a say come the end of the season.

April 2009

Promotion chasers Senec came to town, and we started well, taking a 12th minute lead through Sarangue. We missed chances to extend the lead in the first half, and just after half time Bartos equalised to earn his side a 1-1 draw.

Two early goals from Mati had Kosice two goals up early on in Kosice. We had no answer to their play, and crashed to defeat.

Six minutes into the home tie against Nitra they had Simko sent off. The ten men then sat back and frustrated us, and we struggled to get past them. Ten minutes from time though Krulik managed to squeeze the ball into the net, and in injury time Sarangue wrapped up victory with a second.

The trip to Kys. Lieskovec was a tight affair, and it seemed that it would end 0-0. But with a minute to play Varga was given too much space and we had lost.

May 2009

The trip to Rim. Sobota started well with Bellak scoring inside the very first minute. We weren’t helped though when Cvirik was sent off after 17 minutes, but Bellak added a second three minutes later. We weren’t troubled unduly after that, and just after half time Bartosek scored a third.

A home tie against struggling Zlate moravce was next up for us, and midway through the first half Sarangue put us ahead. We should have been home and dry when they had Simcek sent off before half time, but eight minutes into the second half Petras equalised, and we could only muster a draw.

Our last home tie of the season was against Podrezova, but it was poor game in the first half. Midway through the second period Sarangue gave us the lead, but ten minutes later Pelegrin equalised. And with two minutes to go Pelegrin scored again and our home season ended disappointingly.

We were poor on our trip to Senica, and in the last seven minutes before half time Hejcik scored twice. Najman added a third just after half time, and although Bellack pulled one back on 66, it was nowhere near enough.

The last game of the season was away at Rapid Bratislava. Bellack staked his claim for a place next season with the opening goal before half time, and just after half time Sarangue added a second as we ended the season victorious.

It’s been a pleasing first few months in charge, and we’ve shown enough to give me confidence of making a real push for next season. The fans voted Stefan Zosak as their player of the season. He’s been injured for most of my tenure so far, so I’ll just have to take their word on his performances.

Preseason 2009

There was a lot of transfer action around the club, but such is the financial situation in Slovakia that there was very little money flying around. Dzurik, Homola, Cajka and Zvara all retired from playing the game, although Zvara has stayed on in a role as physio. Marek Kascak was sold to Podbrezova for £8,000 and Peter Budzak completed a £6,000 move to Rapid Bratislava. Podbrezova also took Tomas Kutka for free, whilst Presov were allowed to take Frantisek Dzuricek, also for free. Senec signed Stefan Tomcak for £3,000 and Bac signed Peter Marinic on a free transfer.

We had 2 youngsters coming through the youth ranks, defender Peter Kral, who looks quite good, and goalkeeper Jozef Nemec. We signed another goalkeeper in the form of Peter Kmacik for £3,000 from Bardejov, and defender Jozef Gaspar came in from Inter Bratislava for £12,000. Bulgarian right-winger Georgi Peev has been signed on a free transfer from Dinamo Kiev, and attacking midfielder Radoslav Bella has come in from Presov for £7,000. Defensive midfielders Radek Slama, a Czech who signed for £12,000 from Ceske Budejovice, and Burundi international James Béda, signed for £10,000 from Vital’O, were both snapped up, and we also signed scout Milan Labant from Licartovce. I also loaned Prievidza striker Peter Skrtel for the first six months of the season.

Our opening pre-season friendly was in the Czech Republic against Olomouc-Holice. Both sides looked tired, and we fell to a late goal.

First Division side Trencin visited next, and they outplayed us throughout the game, as we lost 2-0.

Our first goal was scored midway through the first half of the trip to non-league Lokomotiva Kosice by Sarangue. Homola (before he retired) added a second late on, but we conceded a goal after that to win by only two goals to one.

Bellack twice gave us the lead against Polish outfit Korona, but the Poles hit back on both occasions, and we had to settle for a 2-2 draw.

The last game was at home to Czech side Drnovice, and we were completely out of sorts. Conceding an early goal is not a good idea, neither is having Cvirik sent off just before half time. We conceded two further goals in the second half to leave our preparations in tatters.

We’ve not had a great preseason, but I feel that the squad has been significantly improved over the summer. The bookmakers have us 5th-favourites for promotions at odds of 8-1, and I think that’s about right. It’s not going to be easy, but I feel that we can have a big say in the shake-up at the top of the table come the end of the season.

July 2009

The season began for us with a trip to Dun. Streda, and it looked like a season-opener early on. As the game wore on we started to take control of the match, and on the hour Sarangue finally put us ahead. Thirteen minutes later Bellack got a second, and two minutes later Sarangue added a third from the penalty spot. Suchy pulled one back for the home side in injury time, but we had already won the match.

Our first home match of the season was against newly promoted Bac. Chances were few and far between, and if anything, the visitors looked more likely to score. In the end, they didn’t, we didn’t, and it ended 0-0.

August 2009

The month began at home to Banska Bystrica, and after heavy pressure on our goal we conceded to Hrubina after just 11 minutes. We struggled to get back into the match, but we stopped the visitors playing, and that gave us hope. Just before the hour mark they had Vaculciak sent off, and with fourteen minutes left to play Sarangue equalised. Adrian Ceman fired us into the lead five minutes later, and Durica came off the bench to add two further goals in injury time to wrap up a 4-1 win.

We again struggled early on, this time away at Senica, conceding a 20th-minute effort to Molnar. We were though given a helping hand when Jan Petras was sent off early in the second half, but we laboured without threatening too much. It took an amazing run and shot from substitute Zosak to level things up on 77, and five minutes later Sarangue struck to give us all three points.

For once we took an early lead, Bellak putting us ahead after three minutes at home to Kys. Lieskovec. We battered their goal without more reward, and with their first effort of the game, Oravec equalised seven minutes into the second half. Ten minutes later though Bellak restored our lead, but the game wasn’t wrapped up until the final minute when Bartosek cracked in a third from a free kick.

We travelled to Vranov next, and despite dominating the early proceedings, Bartos put them ahead after 17 minutes. We continued to make most of the running, and ten minutes into the second half Sarangue equalised. There were still chances at both ends, and ten minutes from time Semanko struck to condemn us to our first defeat of the season.

The final match of the month was away at Rapid Bratislava, and we got off to the worse possible start, conceding a 5th-minute penalty that Kalmar put away. We weren’t helped when Vajda was given his second booking of the game just before half time, but eight minutes into the second period Stano equalised. We more than held our own, and broke effectively, but ten minutes from time substitute Bartosek was given his marching orders to leave us with just nine men on the field of play. But two minutes later Stano broke to put us into the lead, and amazingly, Pis added two more in the last five minutes to earn us an amazing 4-1 win. icon_eek.gif

It’s been quite a crazy month, and we seem to only want to play once we’ve fallen behind and/or conceded a goal. Still, we find ourselves top of the pile at this early stage, but we’re showing enough to give me a lot of hope for the season.

September 2009

North Korea international striker Joon-Hyung Lim joined us on a free transfer from April 25, and it seems that the fans were pleased with his signing. He went straight into the side as we hosted Bac in the first round of the Cup. The game took a while to get going, but soon we started to take control, and made all the running. Bac were creating nothing, but they defended well, and on 64 broke for Horvath to put them ahead with their first, and only, effort on goal. We continued to dominate the game, but we couldn’t find the back of the net, and we seemed to be heading out. Two minutes into injury time though Stano headed in an equaliser, and the tie was to be decided on penalties. We had Peter Kmecik to thank, saving two spot kicks as we progressed 4-3 on penalties, Georgi Peev scoring the decisive kick. We’ll face top-flight side Dubnica at home in the second round at the end of the month.

Before that though we had to host Rim. Sobota. It wasn’t a classic by any means, and chances were few and far between. But with 68 minutes gone Tomko struck, and we held out for a 1-0 win.

Joon-Hyung Lim scored his first goal early on at home to Humenne, and it was a beauty as well, hooking the ball over the goalkeeper. Sarangue added a second five minutes later, and before half time the Mozambiquan added a third. Sarangue completed his hatrick early in the second half, and we eased up to win 4-0.

A trip to Cana was our only away match of the month, and although we played well, we lacked a cutting edge, and had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

The final game of the month was the cup-tie against Dubnica who were 7th (of 10) in the top flight. We started brightly, causing them all sorts of problems, but had to be aware of their ability to break. Ten minutes before the break Hodur caught us, and we found ourselves behind. We kept going in the second half, and on the hour Sarangue equalised. That’s how it finished, and again we had a penalty shoot-out to negotiate. Both goalkeepers did well, and after five kicks each it was only 2-2. Dubnica hit their sixth over the bar, and Bella finally put us through to a quarterfinal meeting with Inter Bratislava, the first leg at our place.

October 2009

The campaign continued with a home tie against Duslo Sala, and after a poor opening first half hour, Georgi Peev gave us the lead with a header; his first goal of the game. We weren’t much better in the second half, but seventeen minutes from time Ceman struck again, and we had a welcome win.

Next up was a trip to Kosice, and we were absolutely terrible. Bartos scored twice inside the first seven minutes, and they could have had more before Krocko added a third on 27. Seven minutes later Linev added a fourth before Sarangue pulled a goal back with a minute. The second half wasn’t much better as Bartos scored twice more, sandwiching another Krocko effort, and we whimpered to a 7-1 defeat. icon_mad.gif

It wasn’t the best preparation to take on league leaders Inter Bratislava in the first leg of the Cup quarterfinal. And things got even worse for us when we had Gaspar sent off after just 13 minutes. We did well though to keep the visitors out, but ten minutes into the second half Ancic finally broke through our defences. We kept our heads up though, and caused Inter a few problems. Two minutes from time though Kralik was shown a second booking, but within a minute Cech scored an own goal under pressure to level up the scores. But we didn’t concentrate enough, and Halenar went up the other end to restore the lead for the visitors. More though was to come as Stano headed in from a corner deep into injury time to make the second leg very interesting.

The second leg came the next week, and we did well until our only first-team defender, Jaroslav Vajda, was sent off seven minutes before the break. Perminov struck a cracker just before half time to put us behind, and ten minutes into the second half Martins das Navas scored a second. Twelve minutes from time Shengelia added a third as we crashed out 5-2 on aggregate.

We had to get back on track quickly, and a home tie with Senec gave us the opportunity to do so. We struggled to break them down in the first half, but just after the hour mark Stano got through to put us ahead. Three minutes later Pis doubled the advantage from a free kick, and did the same eight minutes later to give us a very welcome 3-0 win.

I’ve got no explanation for the Kosice result, or the spate of sendings off in the cup-ties. But we’ve kept our heads up, and we know that there is still a lot of work to do if we want to realise our dream of promotion.

November 2009

We began the month with a trip to basement dwellers Podbrezova, and after struggling to find our finishing touch; Stano gave us the lead seven minutes before the break. As the break loomed we were awarded a penalty, and Sarangue smashed it home. We eased up in the second half, and although Jurickovic scored in injury time, it was no more than a consolation.

The last game before the winter break was a home tie with Prievidza. Four minutes in we had the lead through Sarangue, and after a quiet half hour, Lim doubled the lead from a free kick. Three minutes later though Simko pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, and after pressure in the early part of the second half Vozny equalised. That woke us out of our slumber. Four minutes after conceding Lim had us back in front, and nine minutes from time Zosak scored a special goal to wrap up a 4-2 victory.

Winter Break 2009-10

We’ve been doing really well in the first half of the season, but despite that, we still find ourselves three points behind Banska Bystrica in the race for promotion. It seems that it would be a race between the top two and Kys. Lieskovec, but we have to keep up the pressure in the second half of the season.

Stefan Zosak has seen his place in the team go to Bulgarian international Georgi Peev, and so he was allowed to leave for £6,000 to join Bac. We will though get more based on appearances. I do have a replacement lined-up for next season, but as an interim fix, I have taken young Zilina midfielder Krzysztof Krawiec on loan for six months. There was one other transfer from the club; Miroslav Toth joined Banska Bystrica on a free transfer.

February 2010

We started back with a home tie against Dun. Streda. Thirteen minutes in Lim gave us the lead, and we kept on pressing, but without much success. Eventually a lovely move ended with Lim doubling the lead, and ten minutes from the end Sarangue scored a third to give us a welcome victory.

Lim looks to be getting into his groove, and eleven minutes in to our trip to Bac he gave us the lead. Bac came back quickly, and on 25 Hatok equalised. We had a lot of defending to do after that, but we held out and twenty minutes from time Ricardo Sarangue struck to give us the win.

It’s been a good restart for us, and with Banska Bystrica dropping points against Cana, we’re right back in it. We’ve got them at their place next weekend, and it’s nothing short of crucial for us.

March 2010

The game at Banska Bystrica was fast and furious, and both sides had early chances to take the lead. On the half hour Sarangue struck to give us the lead, only for Koziak to equalise six minutes after the break. The game was flowing from both ends, and with eighteen minutes to play Piatka put the home side ahead. A loss would be the worst possible result for us, and thankfully Sarangue found an equaliser three minutes from time.

We dominated throughout the home tie with Senica, but we just couldn’t find the net. Ten minutes before half time Klesken scored on the break for Senica, and we started to get desperate. Three minutes into injury time at the end of the game Bella fired in his first goal for the club from 25 yards, but a draw is not really enough.

A trip to 3rd-placed Kys. Lieskovec, and it was a similar story, as we controlled much of the game. Ten minutes after half time we were caught out at the back by Spanik, but within five minutes Stano had us level. The game fizzled out after that, and we still have it all to do over the last ten games.

We have ten games to go, but the one positive is that we’ve already played the three other sides in the top four. It’s not going to be easy, and with three consecutive draws, confidence has just dipped slightly in the camp.

April 2010

We hosted Vranov, but in truth it was a poor game, with chances very few and far between. Even the sending off of Petras before half time didn’t help us, and it ended 0-0.

The trip to Humenne started well, with Stano giving us the lead in just the second minute. Sarangue doubled the lead on 25, and eight minutes later Gaspar headed in a third from a corner. Stano made it 4-0 early in the second half, and the home side had Vesely sent off with forty minutes to play. We eased up though and it ended 4-0.

Rapid Bratislava came to town, and in an even worse game than against Vranov, we ended 0-0. Very disappointing.

We were given another difficult game away at Rim. Sobota. Neither side created too many goalscoring opportunities, but eight minutes into the second half Georgi Peev capitalised on poor defending to put us into the lead. But twelve minutes later Vencel equalised with a free kick and we had to settle for another draw.

Six draws in our last seven games is not really championship form, and with just six games left to play we find ourselves a full four points behind. We’re probably going to have to win at least five of those games, and we will still be hoping that Banska Bystrica slip up. I’m quietly optimistic, but it’s not in our hands.

May – June 2010

We hosted Kosice, and were out for revenge following our 7-1 reversal earlier in the season. A quiet opening half hour was broken when Stano struck to give us the lead, and just before half time James Béda ghosted in to head in a second. Stano and Sarangue added further goals within two minutes of each other early in the second half, and Bartosek wrapped up a 5-0 victory with a free kick on 78.

We struggled early on against Cana at home, but Stano was on hand to fire us into the lead after half an hour. But twelve minutes into the second half Sarangue got himself sent off, and Cerna equalised nine minutes later to leave us crestfallen.

An earl strike from Durica had us under way as we travelled to Duslo Sala, but we struggled to make more of our efforts stick. Six minutes into the second half the home side had Luptak sent off, and on 66 Bartosek scored a very welcome second.

A trip to Senec proved to be difficult as we just couldn’t make chances. Senec didn’t look like doing much either, but with a minute to go Guldan got through our defence to condemn us to defeat for the first time since October.

The penultimate match was a home tie with Podbrezova. The relegated side were content to sit back and defend, and a 0-0 draw ensued, handing the title, and promotion to Banska Bystrica.

We ended the season with a trip to Prievidza, and within 30 seconds Georgi Peev has us ahead. Adrian Ceman headed in a second on the half hour, and Stano made it 3-0 just after half time. There could have been more goals before full time, and Stano did hit a fourth in injury time.

It just wasn’t to be in the end. Our form in the second half of the season wasn’t good enough as we failed to turn draws into victories. Still, we’ve shown that we can do really well right throughout a whole season, and with only few changes in personnel expected over the summer, I firmly believe that we can go that extra step next season. Ricardo Sarangue will be a vital cog in our squad, and it was no surprise to see him voted by the fans as their Player of the Season.

Preseason 2010

There was a lot of transfer action around the club, but such is the financial situation in Slovakia that there was very little money flying around. Kralik retired from playing the game, and Lubos Ilizi was released from the club when his contract expired. Michal Zlatohlavek went to Kys. Lieskovec on a free transfer, and Pavol Durica was sold for £9,000 to Bac.

We had 6 youngsters coming through the youth ranks, and some of them might even get some action this season. Young striker Peter Skrtel came in for £6,000 from Prievidza, and experienced defender Rastislav Belicak joined for £10,000 from Kosice. Midfielder Milan Pastva came in for free from double holders Inter Bratislava, and young defender Plamen Danchev was signed for £10,000 from Rim. Sobota.

Our first game of the preseason was at home to Czech side Zlin, and we looked poor early on. Sarangue equalised just before the break after we had gone down, but Zlin scored a second in the second half and we lost.

A trip to non-league Jelsava was next for us, and again we seemed to be out of our depths as we crashed to a 2-1 defeat, Lim scoring for us on 24. Lim also scored our consolation at home to Trecin as we lost 2-1 yet again.

My former club, Znamya Truda, came to town, and goals from Lim and Sarangue just around the break gave us a very welcome 2-0 win.

Sarangue scored a penalty to give us a 1-1 draw at home to Jilhava, but we lost our final game 2-0 at non-league Topolcany.

We’ve not had a great preseason, but I feel that the squad has been significantly improved over the summer, and some of the youngsters look decent. The bookmakers have us joint 2nd-favourites for promotions at odds of 7-4, and I think that’s about right. It’s not going to be easy, but I feel that we can have a big say in the shake-up at the top of the table come the end of the season.

July 2010

We opened our campaign with a home tie against Bac, and with 11 minutes gone Sarangue had us ahead. Nine minutes later we scored a second, and the hatrick was complete five minutes before the break. The Mozambiquan had an effort ruled out in the second half before Majoros pulled a goal back. In injury time Otocka picked up his second booking of the night as he conceded a penalty and Sarangue netted his fourth of the afternoon.

Young goalkeeper Vyacheslav Zhukovskiy was signed for £5,000 from Senica and Peter Kuracka joined Nitra for £2,000 prior to the home tie with Dun. Streda. Sixteen minutes in Sarangue had us ahead, and three minutes later the visitors had Buka sent off. Joon-Hyung Lim got himself off the mark on 28, and in first half injury time Sarangue took his tally for the season to six. Lim grabbed his second early in the second half, and our season has started superbly.

August 2010

Goalkeeper Michal Peskovic was sold for £3,000 to Kys. Lieskovec ahead of our trip to Kosice. We started well, and could have scored twice in the opening five minutes. We didn’t though, and soon Kosice started to come at us. The early pressure soon abated, and the game meandered into the second half. Kosice were still threatening, but we looked dangerous on the break, and fourteen minutes from the end Sarangue struck to put us into the lead. Four minutes later young midfielder Mikhail Chitaia headed home from a corner, and we had a very welcome 2-0 win.

A trip to Senec was next up for us, and although we didn’t look too hot, Lim gave us the lead after 26 minutes. Senec to their credit kept coming at us, and we paid for our failure to get a second when Bakos equalised twelve minutes from time.

Newly promoted Ziar nad Hronom came to our place, and we handed them a gift in the third minute when we conceded a penalty. Simcek though hit it at the post, and Kmecik gratefully gathered the ball into his arms. We were again disappointing from an attacking point of view, and the visitors might have won it in the second half. It ended 0-0 and things are starting to look a little insecure at the moment.

It was 1st versus 2nd as we travelled to Duslo Sala who had started the season very well. We created the early chances, but four minutes before the break were caught on the break and Vencel put them ahead. It required drastic action in the second half, and the introduction of Peter Skrtel was instrumental. He found an equaliser fifteen minutes from time, and three minutes from time he forced the goalkeeper, Pronaj, to force the ball into his own net, and we had snatched a win.

Things haven’t gone quite to plan this month, but we’re still getting the results and that’s important. There are a number of teams who could provide us with a real challenge in the race for promotion. James Béda has been inspirational in the fifteen months or so that he has been at the club. The Burundian’s performance has attracted attention from some of Europe’s top clubs, and a move to Barcelona earlier in the summer was scuppered due to Barca having too many non-EU players in the squad. But as August came to a close Béda completed a £1,000,000 move to Marseille when the French club matched his release club. It will give Slama a chance in midfield.

September 2010

Last season Presov were playing top-flight football, and they’ve looked anxious to get straight back up there. We hosted them, and both sides looked good, creating chances at either end. But it was the defences who were on top as the game ended goalless.

Top-flight side Trencin came to visit in the first round of the Cup. It was a difficult game for us, and early on they gave us a lot of problems. But we held on well at the back, and slowly started to create our own chances. Just before half time Lim gave us the lead with a header, and Trencin were shocked. They did provide us with a few problems in the second half, but once they had Josip Kovac sent off on 73 we eased our way to the second round. We’ll meet our conquerors from last season, Inter Bratislava, in the second round – and again we have a home tie.

A trip to Humenne was next up for us, and they looked very dangerous on the break. But just after the half hour Sarangue headed us into the lead, and we had a 1-0 lead at half time. Three minutes after the break though Timko equalised, but from the kick off we went forward and Lim put us ahead once more. There were still some awkward moments after that, but we held on to win and claim all three points.

When Rapid Bratislava had Popov sent off after just seven minutes, and then Bubenko sent off on 23 at our place, we should have had them comfortably on the ropes. But for some reason we didn’t produce the goods, and even when we did start to threaten late on, Rapid were content to put everyone behind the ball and defend their way to a 0-0 draw.

October 2010

A trip to Kys. Lieskovec was next up for us, but it was a poor game, with neither side creating too many chances. The home side had Matus sent off twenty minutes from the end, but we failed to take advantage, and the game ended goalless.

Inter Bratislava came to us in the second round of the Cup during the week, and early on we caused them a few problems. We didn’t score though, and as the first half wore on the visitors started to show their class. We held out until half time, but seven minutes into the second period Ancic headed them into the lead and we had no reply after that, crashing out of the Cup to them for the second successive year.

A visit from Zlate moravce represented a 1st versus 2nd clash, and yet again we failed to produce in front of goal. To be honest, the visitors didn’t look too good either, but a cracking strike from Petras on the hour won the game for them.

We knew that we had to get back to form as we travelled to Vranov, but we were on the back foot for much of the first half. We held out comfortably though, although we were hampered when Belicak was sent off just before half time. Lim though gave us the lead twenty minutes from time, and in the last three minutes the North Korean scored twice more to give us a comfortable win.

We finally got back to winning ways, and scoring goals, in that last match, and with everyone dropping points, the top four cannot be separated by points. It’s promising to be a very interesting season.

November 2010

A home tie with Nitra was how we began the month, and after a few early misses, and cracking strike from Radek Slama put us ahead six minutes before the break. Sarangue added a second two minutes later, and that was enough for us.

We started well away at Licartovce, with Milan Pis putting us ahead after eleven minutes with a free kick. But six minutes later we were caught at the back and Straka equalised. Slowly we got back into the game, and ten minutes after half time Peev headed us back in front. There were plenty of chances for both sides for the remainder of the game, but there was no further scoring and we claimed a 2-1 win.

The last match before the winter break was at home to Prievidza, and we were given a large helping hand when Gajdosik was sent off after four minutes. Three minutes later Lim fired in a free kick to put us into the lead, and ten minutes later Ricardo Sarangue headed in a second. Oleg Noskov fired through a crowded box on the half hour to make it 3-0, and despite having plenty of chances, we only had another Lim free kick to show for our domination.

So, after a bit of a dodgy patch in mid-October we’ve hit back with four consecutive wins, and going into the winter break we find ourselves at the top of the table once more.

Winter Break 2010 – 2011

There wasn’t much action going on around the club during the winter break, primarily because I feel very confident with the squad that we have. I did strengthen the midfield with the record signing of Peter Vavrik for £30,000 from Zilina. I also brought in scout Pavol Luptak from Podbrezova. Apart from that though, there’s not much to report as we look to secure top spot come the end of the season.

March 2011

We began back with a trip to struggling Dun. Streda, and after struggling in the early part of the game Sarangue put us ahead on the half hour. Ten minutes later the Mozambiquan scored a second, and we were given a further helping hand when Luptak was sent off just before half time. We didn’t push on in the second half, as we looked to build a bit of match fitness ahead of the run-in.

We controlled the early part of the game at home to Kosice, and so it was a big relief when Lim eventually gave us the lead after half an hour. Kosice came back at us late in the first half and early in the second half, but on the hour Sarangue scored a second on the break. Benko pulled a goal back for Kosice on 78, but we held out to win the game 2-1.

A trip to Bac was next for us, and it was a disappointing match, with chances at a premium. We got the only goal of the game though, Ricardo Sarangue getting it midway through the second half.

The home tie with Senec was a disgrace to football. There were two efforts in all, and it was an awful spectacle for the fans. 0-0 it finished.

We were a little better away at Ziar nad Hronom, although we were helped when Lim put us ahead ten minutes before the break. Sarangue added a second four minutes later, and we saw out the rest of the game quite easily.

We had a glorious chance early on at home to Duslo Sala, but Ricardo Sarangue fired a 9th-minute penalty straight at the goalkeeper. The striker through made up for his error on 27 when he put us in front. Duslo Sala rarely threatened, and midway through the second half Sarangue doubled the lead. Skrtel added a third three minutes from time to wrap up a comfortable win.

We’ve not played all that well this month, but we’ve picked up the points, and that’s what counts at the end of the day. We do though still have to play our two main challengers for the title – in fact, our next match is away at Presov.

April 2011

We dominated our crucial tie away at Presov, but we found scoring a bit more troublesome. It took a wonderful free kick from Joon-Hyung Lim midway through the second half to give us the lead, and we then saw out the final minutes under pressure from a finally-awoken Presov.

A trip to Rapid Bratislava was next up for us, and fourteen minutes passed before Sarangue gave us the lead. We probably should have scored a few more before time was up, but Rapid rarely threatened, and our bandwagon rolled on.

A home tie with Kys. Lieskovec saw us take the lead after half an hour when Peter Cvirik found himself in the right place at the right time to turn the ball home. It got worse for the visitors two minutes later when Antal was booked for the second time in the game, and Milan Pis cracked in a free kick to double the lead. We eased off in the second half, but were never in trouble as we recorded a 2-0 victory.

Our final game of the month was a home tie with Humenne, and eight minutes in Sarangue had us in front. But to their credit, Humenne fought back, and five minutes before the break were awarded a penalty. But goalkeeping understudy Vyacheslav Zhukovskiy did well to parry Samo’s effort to keep us in the lead. But we failed to heed the warning, and after threatening for much of the second half to equalise, they did so with fourteen minutes remaining when Hrncar scored on the break.

We’ve managed to open up a six-point lead at the top of the table now, and with just five games to go, things are starting to look very good. We travel to second-placed Zlate moravce early next month, and a win there would put us on the verge on promotion.

May-June 2011

We began the final run-in with a crucial trip to Zlate moravce. Things weren’t looking good for us when Slama got himself sent off midway through the first half for two bookings, but we defended well, and just in first half injury time Lim struck to put us ahead. The North Korean hit a second on the hour, and we had a crucial victory to put us within four points of promotion.

A home tie with Vranov was next up for us, and Sarangue had us ahead midway through the second half as we dominated. But we didn’t manage to get another goal, and midway through the second half Vranov equalised through Bilski. We weren’t to be denied though; Lim scoring the winner twelve minutes from time.

We knew that a draw at Nitra would be enough to see us win the league, and thereby promotion, but we set out our stall to win. We had enough chances to do so, but we didn’t score. The 0-0 scoreline though was enough for us to claim the point that we needed to finally meet our goal of promotion to the top flight.

For the last two games I decided to give some of the younger and more fringe players of the squad a chance. First up was a home tie with Licartovce, and Stefan Duris, who had been scoring for fun for the Under 19s, opened his account on his debut with a 14th minute strike, and could have had a hatrick before he added a second on 34. Hatok pulled one back just before half time, but Duris completed his hatrick ten minutes after the break. Stano added a fourth from the bench with thirteen minutes left.

Our last game of the season was a meaningless tie at already-relegated Prievidza. That though didn’t prevent one of the most amazing games that I’ve been involved in. Duris continued to shine by putting us in front after just four minutes, and Peter Skrtel doubled the lead five minutes later. Tomacek pulled one back on 18, only for Duris to restore our three-goal lead on 25. But Prievidza hit back, and goals from Tomacek and Adam had the scores level at 3-3 by half time. The opening part of the second half was quite quiet, but a terrible defensive mistake at the back allowed Adam to put the home side 4-3 ahead. Vozny further extended the lead on 74, but within four minutes Peter Tomko reduced the deficit with a wonderfully taken free kick. It didn’t end there though. Duris added two more in the last seven minutes to give us a fantastic 6-5 victory, and take his first-team record to Played 2, Scored 7, Average Rating 10! icon_razz.gif

Having lost only one game all season, I think we fully deserve our promotion, although a twelve-point lead at the top of the league may be a little too generous to us. We have been pretty lucky with injuries and suspensions this season, and I therefore haven’t had to rely too heavily on my squad this term. Ricardo Sarangue, again voted by the fans as their Player of the Year, has struck up a really good understanding with Joon-Hyung Lim, and youngster Stefan Duris looks to be a fine prospect for the future. I’m not so confident about other areas of the field, and there could well be a number of squad changes over the summer as we look to build for our first-ever season in the Slovak top flight.

This story is going to take a short break icon_frown.gifwhile I work on another (CM-related) project. I do though hope to be back with this story within a few weeks.
