I play some of them through the bad times. Unless they're really bad. If they're on "very poor" then I will talk to them if I have the option or just leave them out until there's an easy game. So you've only just started? I would start by being nice to the players, then gradually get more demanding as they come to respect my authority. "I expect a win" is the best motivational tool.
