Help please! Can't load the game through Steam

I have just installed the game through Steam, however when I try to play it, it comes up saying

Performing first time set up

Installing: Microsoft DirectX for Windows

Then it does nothing. I've tried and tried again but no luck. My computer has the system requirements but it just won't work.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
