Qualification for UEFA Cup

Recommended Posts

Managing Rangers, doing badly.

Got beat in the 2nd qualifier for the Champions League (as they did IRL) and went out of Europe.

Second season, second qualifier, again got beat !!! Only this time I went into the UEFA Cup.

I know the UEFA Cup is now the Europa League next season in real life so is this also a rule change where defeated teams in 2nd Champions League qualifier go into the Europa LEague?

According to Wiki, it shouldn't. Only from the 3rd qualifier.

"In a new system for the Champions League[3], there will be two separate qualifying tournaments. One will be for the Champion clubs who did not automatically qualify for the group stage. The other is for teams who did not win their domestic league and did not automatically qualify for the group stage.

For both sections, the losing teams from the third qualifying round will enter the UEFA Europa League play-off round and the losing teams from the play-off round will enter the UEFA Europa League group stage."

It is not a mistake, ricki. Due to licensing issues, the names of the qualifying rounds in FM are different to that of real life.

Ingame vs Real-life

Preliminary Round - First Qualifying Round

First Qualifying Round - Second Qualifying Round

Second Qualifying Round - Third Qualifying Round

Third Qualifying Round - Playoff Round

That is why it is correct for losers of the CL Second Qualifying Round ingame (CL Third Qualifying Round in real-life) to qualifying for the Playoff Round of the Europa League, which is what the OP experienced with his Rangers side. Meanwhile, losers of the CL Third Qualifying Round ingame (CL Playoff Round in real-life) qualify for the Europa League Group stages directly.
