GylfiAsCharged
April & May 2023 Union Sportive Concarnoise A pretty patchy end to the league season, but we managed to do enough to finish in 5th place and in the play-offs. An away trip to Sochaux awaits us in the semi final. This is a good bit of news; we finally have an affiliate club within the playable leagues, so youngsters can get regular senior experience with them. I have a couple of players in mind who could do with a spell there next season before cracking the first team picture.
GylfiAsCharged
Not entirely surprised, but definitely disappointed that we put in one of our weakest performances of the season in our most important game. Hopefully we get another stab at the play-offs next season. In other news... Club captain and icon Guillaume Jannez is calling it a day. He was a mainstay every season until this year, when young Charles Salaun took over his spot. Season League Pos. GylfiAsCharged
No surprise to see Youssef Ben Ali win Player of the Season, as the league's top scorer from the left wing. Good to see 5 academy graduates in the Best Eleven too. The youth products can be identified by the note icon after their names, there are plenty in the first team picture at the moment. Some new records for Ben Ali, who really has been a revelation this year. Not bad for a kid who only turned 17 in February.
GylfiAsCharged
Preseason 2023 Union Sportive Concarnoise A successful preseason which I made longer than usual. Plenty of youngsters getting pitch time and on the scoresheet too. Some bad injury news however... Frustrating to lose a starting centre-back and one of our best prospects for an extended period. GylfiAsCharged
August & September 2023 Union Sportive Concarnoise A pretty rough start to our fourth season at this level. My team is extremely young at the moment, so a season of consolidation would be adequate for me, but relegation would be a disaster financially. We urgently need to start turning these draws into victories.
GylfiAsCharged
October & November 2023 Union Sportive Concarnoise A month full of draws, followed by a couple of important wins to put some distance between ourselves and the relegation zone. We still sit pretty low in terms of position, but our points total looks much better. Hoping to move up the table over the winter and achieve another respectable finish. GylfiAsCharged
December 2023, January and February 2024 Union Sportive Concarnoise A three month update, as I accidentally played through into February. Following the winter break we found some fantastic form, and have hauled ourselves right up the Ligue 2 table. We're scoring for fun at the moment, with goals from all over the pitch. Antonin Breton has been a mainstay in midfield during his second senior season, and he picked up the league's Player of the Month award for February, a great achievement for the 18 year old. The latest youngster to emerge is striker Famoussa Fofana, who has deputised for Valentin Lavigne on several occasions, scoring 7 in 8 (2) appearances. He's still very raw, but has great pace and is already finding the net at the tender age of 16. I'm excited to see how he grows in the coming years. We did let one youth player go in January, among a ton of interest for several players, centre-back Charles Salaun demanded a move to Guingamp and I managed to get an offer I was happy with. A decent initial fee and sell-on clause for a want-away player. I'm not too disappointed to lose him, as another young centre-back has impressed for us this season. Adam Simon will step in to his place in the team, and while he isn't quite as good as Salaun was, I'm confident he will be an adequate replacement. 13 games left, and we're only 8 points off the play-offs. GylfiAsCharged
March & April 2024 Union Sportive Concarnoise Another excellent couple of months, as our fine form continues. That makes it 12 wins from 15 since the winter break, and the run has seen us climb the table impressively all the way to 6th, just a point outside the play-offs. What makes this run more impressive is that our last three victories came against the league's top three teams, proving we are good enough to beat anyone in this current form. We just need to sustain it over the final four games, and we'll have a shot at the play-offs. Our next opponents Nîmes are sat a point ahead of us in fifth, meaning our fate is in our own hands. We also received our youth intake for 2024... I signed the top 8 players shown. Victor Guillot looks the best of the bunch, an exciting young striker with some decent physicals and mentals for his age. Four massive games remain - I'll update game-by-game during the run-in. GylfiAsCharged
May 2024 Union Sportive Concarnoise A rough start to the run-in, as we were outplayed by our play-off rivals Nîmes who are now managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Thankfully our goal difference remains stronger than those above us, but we need to get three points on the board in the next game to keep the pace. Some terrible news ahead of a must-win game, as our first choice centre-backs are both suspended. I hate this stupid suspension rule... Another terrible performance and result from a makeshift eleven, and our play-off hopes are all but over. A comfortable victory which ensures the play-off race goes right to the wire, as Brest and Ajaccio both drop points. Will they do so again? Defeat at Amiens ends our play-off hopes, though a win for Brest meant that it was ultimately out of our hands. Still, to finish 30 points clear of relegation in a season where it looked a threat at one point is a great achievement, and this young side just keeps getting better. GylfiAsCharged
As you can see, aside from a few senior players my team is now almost entirely made up of youth graduates. Defender Adam Simon and midfielder Leo Gros were this year's breakout stars, and they both look like they will grow into great players in the future. Once again Youssef Ben Ali cleaned up at the awards night, and was the league's standout performer, while Valentin Lavigne won the golden boot. Five seasons in at this level, and we still don't meet the ground grading...
