Your tactic is very patient - meaning your players are looking for the perfect opportunities. Unless they are far superior than your opposition chances are likely to be limited.

If it was me I'd try removing 'work ball into box' and pushing the passing range upto standard.

I think this is all you need changing.

People have to remember that WTBITB is not so much about stopping the wasteful long shots as much as it is about patient build up.

My midfield, previously the most effective area of the team, is now pointless. They wait to be tackled, they pass off target, they press with the intensity off a wet sock - stopping 2 metres away from any opposition.

My midfield is as effective as ever. Maybe slightly less of through balls but I don't have large enough sample to claim that, since I mostly played less creative midfielders. They press, track back and win balls regularly.

  3. There is a lot of talk about training schedules but I'm not a kind of person that is eager to download someone else's work and blindly plug it in.

I didn't like the training change when it came (it was needed but the solution they came up with I dislike) and I always leave it to the assistant manager.

My player growth is fair, especially if they play.

But am I making a huge mistake for longer term progress?

Recently I came across 2 YouTube videos about training schedules. One claimed that his custom training schedule outperformed assman 4 times in CA growth over a season. But it was done without controlled conditions with 2 completely different teams in every way and most importantly in terms of PA and room for growth and it was just donr over one season.

Second video was a huge experiment done by statistics nerd in controlled conditions that gave a ton of data and basically he brought the schedule down to 3 sessions: attacking, resistance and match practice ONLY. He compared it than to 4 most popular training schedules online and outperfmed or matched them in pretty much everything.

This leaves me confused. What do you think I should do with team training?

  4. I think it's obvious: it's training facilities and the stadium. But I'm managing Braga in Portugal and in my second season I finished 2nd. I qualified for table stage of Champions League and got 4/6 wins so far, and my moneybags are full. During this campaign I sold 4 best players for combined 116.5 mil and I replaced them with excellent cheap players, all but one well under 10 million. Due to some ridiculous clauses and raising my salary spending by about 750-100K p/w I don't have a 100 but a comfortable 35 million in the bank, after upgrading my training facilities to state of the art. I don't need more than 15 mil worth of new players if even anyone. I'm keen to invest in the club.

I'm now wondering what to invest in. Stadium is never full, league mostly half attendance, big European games around 1-2K under capacity, so stadium is unnecessary to upgrade.

Choice is not only facilities, but also budgets for staff and alike.

Why I don't blindly invest in youth academy is because I'm not sure I will stay in Braga for too long too reap the benefits. Maybe I will if I never topple Porto. :) Who knows.

"Look for Overlaps" will encourage the attacking boys to be passive. It's not what you think it does, basically it's for possession based football. When they get the ball they'll wait for the overlap to happen instead of doing their thing, slowing down play.

Also with a fullback on support, that overlap probably isn't even happening very often.

Thanks, someone on one community discord also suggested removing the overlaps, but I wasn't even talking about my IFs he just saw my tactics and suggested it without explanation. It now makes sense for me, I will look for a change of play once I remove the instructions.

  6. I know it's not just me because I've seen similar complaints about this but there is something passive in IF off the ball play.

I play 4-3-3 DM with 2 IFs on attack duty and overlap with relatively cautious FBs on support. Even thought I am mostly satisfied with IFs behaviour with the ball once they lay it off to full back, mezzala or supporting CM they tuck in in opposition deffensive line on the edge of opposition box (making them bad passing" option never making a movement to come back and offer them selves for the pass or any other movement that would continue to involve them in the chance creation.

I also see passive behaviour from the IF on the other side and I almost never see a goal assisted by one IF and scored by the other.

My IFs have very good off the ball compared to the league average so I don't like it and consider it a match engine flaw. (Note: I watch all matches on comprehensive highlights).

I tried telling them to stay wider and it helped a bit against some opponents but then didn't against others.

Would it help if I set them as support or give up on the role and make them IWs? I did make them support in some matches when ahead to make them more defensive minded but didn't notice improved off the ball movement (although there is limited sample size of these occasions).

What do you think? I could screenshot my tactic once I'm back home at my desktop, but please give me some preliminary opinions.

You sold Ricardo Horta for 30M and there is a clause that 75% of his next transfer will go to third party and 15% will go to Malaga. So 90% of that amount is gone. That is 27M + 8 = 35.

Thanks for solving what was the riddle for me. There is no way of checking what clauses were on the contract after the window is closed and transactions are done. At least I couldn't find one.

Too bad I hoped this transfer would substantially improve my club's financial position.

Funny that those clauses were in since he came on a free transfer about 5 years ago.

  8. I have no idea where this transfer expenditure comes from. I was not aware of any clauses, and I can not find any in the transfers window.

I mean I spend 8 million on transfers and there is 35 million transfer expenditure, Do you really think a clause would cost me 27 mil?

  9. About half of my scout meeting I click away the players who's wages demand I can't meet. I can understand high compensations to an extent because it can change in a couple of seasons or you can sell a player and suddenly have much more money available so you might want to shortlist player.

It wasn't like this in my last FM21 save (I skipped FM22). I used to get mostly bargains in my scouting meetings.

With the changes done to scouting is there a way to curtail this and stop scouts from offering me high wage demanding players?

  10. I stopped following football almost 10 years ago. But I always came back to the game of FM as it was kind of strategic challenge for me. I have to admit this World Cup reinvigorated my interest in football.

Being old school I was happy when inside forwards were introduced in the game but soon I became desperate as later versions of the game seemed to favour IF and IW much much more in the match engine than traditional wingers.

I agree this correlates with real world football (especially top teams) but just for a sake of an old stubborn guy is there a way to make wingers in attacking midfield work? I especially mean 1 striker formations like 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 DM wide.

I watched some Rashidi video from FM21 where he suggests playing very narrow in possession, but it was still much worse than playing them on opposite sides with opposite foot even they were just accomplished there, and had more of a winger attributes (if we can agree that they are somewhat different than IF favoured attributes).

  11. I'm really sorry I double posted this by mistake. I can't find delete button, so if some of the moderators would delete it, I don't mind of course.

For people complaining about injuries I will suggest something that made a difference and worked for me. It is a common misconception that physios in the team just predict the length of recovery from injury. I followed this misconception and fired 5 of 8 of all physios from my team to save money and staff space. Got a early season injury galore leading to my team missing 6 first team players and one important substitute in 7th or 8th round of the championship. Than I read that physios do more than predict injuries - even tho people couldn't explain what exactly they said that more physios makes them have less workload and can attend more attention to every player needing it. Next time I hired one to go to maximum 9 and felt a massive difference in injury proness without changing anything about, training, pre-season load or anything like that. Continued hireing maximum number of physios  in my subsequent saves and never had the injury galore anymore.

Actually guide to football manager explicitly says physios rolls are reducing chance of injury occurring, reducing length of injury and reducing recovery after injury is gone. Besides that they do also estimate the length of the injury.
