  1. Won my first cup and first league title with Atalanta 3rd season! Cup was a 3-0 win over Juventus (Tumminello hat-trick) while I won the league with 3 games to go. Dropped a lot of points in the league but so did everyone else. Reached Semis of Champions League, but lost in a goal-fest 8-6 on agg to Man City. Tumminello stepped up big time after I lost Barrow for 2 months. Played 4-2-3-1 with an AP and inside fwds. S4...will continue only signing transfer listed Italian players and players in Serie B/C...should have a couple of good ins with Cagliari getting relegated. High priority is Barella and Romagna but other Italian clubs are interested. Really want Romagna as I'm not sure if I can hold onto Varnier with AS Monaco circling.

Some screens of league table, transfers + some young players who start at Atalanta that have developed into first team squad players:

Emerson and Murgia from the transfer list. Vignato, Tonali, Vicari from Serie B clubs (Chievo, Spal got relegated). Terracciano free as a backup keeper. Everyone else is a regen from a Serie B/C club. Macchi (5.5m) is a 18yo keeper. I think I will play him first choice in 21/22...slightly worse than Sportiello in mental stats but with far more potential. Got a few more Serie B regens coming in at start of transfer window as well as Luperto from Napoli on a free. Losing Mancini was tough but playing 2 of Varnier/Capradossi/Vicari ended up being fine.

  2. Didn't understand all the complaints about AI Juventus until this 3rd season...after winning the league first 2 seasons with 92 and 88 pts, they have really struggled so far. Main problem this season is that they sold Dybala to PSG with no attacker coming in (only signing was G.Mancini from me). Have been dropping points with lots of annoying 1-1 draws but the other big teams are struggling even more. Anyway, I hope I can keep it up but I have a horror Feb and March with league matches vs Napoli/Roma/Inter, two leg Coppa Italia Semis vs Lazio and UCL 1st Knockout Rd vs Barca.

  3. Finished S2 with Atalanta. Finished in 3rd on 73pts behind Juventus on 88pts, and Sampdoria (!) on 75. Reached the cup final but lost to Lazio 3-0 (Luis Alberto and Immobile cut us apart). Had a bad Sept/Oct, a great Dec/Jan/Feb and a poor March/April/May. Best win of the season was a 2-1 away win vs Juventus on matchday 30 (first league loss of the season for them) with 19yo sub Kulusevski scoring the winner. No real standout performers, if I had to choose it would be Pasalic. 9 goals and 6 assists in the league in 18(4) apps. Was injured to start the season, spent some time on the bench, then became a regular at RM. Barrow got 18 league goals but was a big reason why we finished poorly. He went nearly 4 months without scoring then suddenly found his shooting boots to score 4 vs Cagliari in the 3rd last game of the season.

Looking forward to S3 and Champions League football. Have a deal agreed for Tonali (£4.8m) who will replace the outgoing Cataldi (£4.1m to Sampdoria). Getting linked to some vacant jobs like Arsenal and Monaco but I have unfinished business at Atalanta. Will be changing formations to play 4-2-3-1, hopefully can turn some of the draws and losses from S2 into wins and draws.

    Some screens of player development:

Mancini - Was happy that he picked up a Italy cap in the March friendlies. Missed out on the final Euro 2020 squad though. Inter, Juventus, Napoli after him.

Varnier - After not developing much first season, he got more games than he probably deserved because of his potential and is starting to finally look like a player.

Melegoni - Huge development after returning from his S1 loan. Became a regular at the expense of Cataldi. Will be tough but hopefully can grab a Italy cap next season.

Kulusevski - Called up from the U20s after Acuna got injured as I wanted a left footed player to play LM. Coaches think he can develop a lot more which is exciting.

Traore - 17yo Ivorian kid who really surprised me...developed heaps just from playing U20 and U18 football. Seems a talent irl, transfermarkt says he has scored 7 in 7 games for the Atalanta U17s so far this season. Gave him a start last league game of season and will be part of 1st team squad S3. Will be playing wingers so will get some game time.

  4. Just realised that Filippo Melegoni picked up the Wonderkid tag in my save. Guy loves training, consistently a 10.00. Every month the HoYD tells me he is showing remarkable improvements in training.

2nd Season going well. Currently 2nd, which is about the best I can do. Juventus are 11 pts clear and on track for an unbeaten season (17W-7D-0L). Am 8 pts ahead of 5th so hopefully I can keep it up and snag a UCL spot. Turned down some crazy bids for Musa Barrow from Leipzig. Quiet January with just 2 ins from the transfer list (Murru, Capradossi) and one out (Djimsiti).

Bettella looks pretty bad. Atalanta even loaned him out to Serie B at the start of third season.  Djimsiti is on around the same level.

Mancini, Vernier screenshots. Bastoni from my squad for reference. I wanted Vernier as De Vrij rotation option on BPD, but won't happen this season. :D

Bettella got potential but yeah I could see myself loaning him out in January. I would hope he would be ready to be a backup for start of 3rd season. He is two years younger than Varnier so I'm not as urgent about his development. Bastoni looks good...dude has looked amazing for so many editions of FM now.

My Varnier is basically 1-2 points worse everywhere but I am 10 months in game time behind you.

Here's Mancini for me, develops much better with regular game time and away from the AI:

He looks class. Wanted to bring him to Inter at the start of third season, but Atalanta won't go under 150mil. :D

That's also ridiculous. For example Fiorentina wanted 100mil for Chiesa throughout the first season, obviously noone wanted to pay that much and then he requests a transfer and is listed for 28mil.

Yeah Varnier has got potential but I didn't develop him enough 1st season. Took over in January in 19th so wanted to play best team and climb table. Atalanta has so many good CBs (Mancini, Toloi, Palomino, Masiello) that his only game time came when I had to give Hateboer a rest at RB. 2nd season sold Toloi, Palomino and Masiello so path is much clearer. Signed Luka Bogdan from Livorno and Djimsiti is back from loan...decent squad players but players that Varnier should overtake easily with game time. Really giving him the best chance possible to make it. Dunno how Davide Bettella looks in your game but my coaches think he has more potential than Varnier.

Currently having a hard time deciding who to play: I have an abundance of talent on the flanks, with Tadic, Neres, Fischer, Cerny, Marin, Stengs, Nunnely and Johnsen all developing well. Playing with a slightly modified database, really wanted to get Fischer and Tremoulinas, so I made that happen. Couldn't hope for more from a Tagliafico backup in Tremoulinas, who's been challenging for a first team spot based on his good performances.

How much did you pay for Stengs? In FM18, AZ never wanted to sell me Til, Stengs or Boadu. I got Wijndal but I think I paid some dumb amount.

I like to tie my hands a bit and only sign domestic players. What's the best club to be able to achieve this by the end of the following Summer?

I am doing a variation of this at Atalanta and I can recommend them as a suitable club. When the loan players return, you'll have a bunch of Italian players that are worthy of being in the 1st team squad. Before you even need to purchase Italian players, you have Sportiello and Gollini for keepers, Mancini/Varnier/Bettella/Mattiello/Masiello in defence, Melegoni/Valzania/Carraro/Pessina in midfield and Petagna/Vido/Tumminello/Capone in attack. If you want to go all Italian, you can sell the non-Italian players for some nice values too. Received between £11.25m and £25m each for Hateboer, Ilicic, Freuler, Toloi, Palomino and Berisha while guys I didn't sell like De Roon/Gomez/Barrow/Gosens could all fetch great fees too. In addition, superb training and youth facilities so can develop from within. Got a 'golden generation' for my first batch of newgens; one of them is being fast-tracked as my backup RB for season 2.

Having a quick look at Serie A, you can do it with the majority of Serie A clubs to be honest. Even outside of Juve/Inter/Napoli/Milan/Roma/Lazio, you could build around Belotti/Zaza at Torino, Chiesa at Fiorentina, Berardi/Politano at Sassuolo or Barella/Romagna at Cagliari.

Took over 19th placed Atalanta in January 1st season. Wanted to join someone in the relegation zone in one of the big 5 leagues. Original squad, didn't make any transfers, just a couple that the AI made in winter window (Acuna from Sporting CP in on loan with option to buy, Castagne out). At the March international break now, in 13th position going 6W-1D-2L in the league since I took over. Lost 5-4 on agg to Napoli in the semis of the Coppa Italia and lost 2-1 on agg to Lazio in the Europa 2nd KO round. Little disappointed with that but was against good opposition and can now focus on climbing the league table.

Will properly re-assess the squad at season's end but looking to sell 31yos Gomez and Ilicic to fund some transfers. Lots of decent players on loan that will return. Will probably only sign Italian players on the transfer list/without contract + players from Serie B to keep myself from signing the same names.

Finished 1st season in 8th place. 13W-3D-3L, 42pts after I took over. Would have been good for 2nd in the second half of season league table (but still 8pts worse than Juve). Aiming for CL football 2nd season.

Lots of transfers out, including 1st teamers Hateboer, Ilicic, Freuler, Toloi, Palomino, Berisha, Pessina, Masiello, Reca while Rigoni and Adnan returned to their parent clubs. Took the option to make Pasalic's loan permanent, signed Sturaro + Cataldi from the transfer list, signed Morosini, Bogdan, Ibrahimi from Serie B clubs and Krunic from relegated Empoli. Didn't replace all my outs with transfers as Atalanta has a bunch of talented players returning from loan that can be used. Petagna, Melegoni, Vido, Mattiello, Sportiello, Carraro, Djimsiti all part of squad for 2nd season.

Will do lots of rotating and injuries/suspensions always happen but I think best XI is:

    			M.Sportiello
    S.Sturaro	M.Varnier	G.Mancini	R.Gosens
    		D.Cataldi	M.De Roon
    A.Gomez M.Acuna
    			L.Vido
    			M.Barrow

  11. Excellent write-up.

Best thing about Ajax is the amount of talented players with variable potential means every save is a little different in terms of who makes it. Had enjoyable 4-5 season saves with Ajax in FM17/FM18 and I used Ajax as my first FM19 beta save. I only reached March 2019 in the beta but was enjoying it. The standard of the league means you have plenty of opportunity to rest players for European comps and give youngsters game time (also lots of injuries in beta). Addition of Gravenberch, Brobbey, Taylor and Hansen gives you some more potential wonderkids. In my short save, Schuurs and Sierhuis became regulars quickly while Ekkelenkamp, Gravenberch, Pasquali all had at least 5 starts and 5 sub appearances. Especially liked Schuurs, the CB, RB, DM versatility proved invaluable and he scored a couple of great free kicks.

Aug window signings included Marin, Joveljic, Soucek, Shepelev, Stangl. Departures included Sinkgraven (I don't like his defensive stats, didn't have a long-term injury in beta), Schone (will take what I can for a 32yo, great personality aside), Wober (West Brom made an offer I couldn't refuse) and Mazraoui (I know he is killing it in real life but I hate his tackling and positioning...much rather just use Schuurs, Bakboord or Van Gelderen). January window saw the departure of Van der Beek for 57m to Chelsea. Orejuela left on deadline day with Malacia coming in to replace him. Ziyech nearly left for 28m but rejected Monaco's contract offer. Would definitely recommend Marin and Joveljic for those looking for cheap attacking players at start of the game. Stangl good value on a free to fill in as backup left back too.
