  1. Oh yes, to get back in topic as per the original post, I won't buy FM21 - at least not in pre-order, not at day one.

I will give the demo a go for sure, hoping it won't taste as much FM19-20-ish as I sadly think it will.
I will have my own way of testing things out, and of course I'll check both the Bugs and the Tactics forums to see at least in part what's been done with ME and tactics. That's what I care about the most.

    ------

On a side note, I don't like the way of stating "FM costed me X per hour so it's a good game". I spent good times with games I paid literally 0.20 euros (that's 18p for you brexiters), I have some 400 hours on a game which I paid 4 euros (3.60£) plus the countless hours I enjoyed in the alpha and beta phases, I could have wasted money on the well renowned AAA title The Last Of Us, which I only played for no more than a couple hours.

I've come to a point where it's how much you enjoy a game - and not the hours/price ratio - what makes the difference.

And no, it's not 30 pounds, the official price is 55 euros (49.8 pounds) on Steam - still I wonder why the official price is set to be this expensive and then keys are sold for half the price.

Guessing that's that for the ME but a major gripe I've run into is teams just passing the ball across their defence for the majority of the game. Even if I happen to be a goal or two up the opposition just seem content to rack up passes amongst their back four.

These are fairly common occurrences for me (playing as RB Leipzig)

Even going full on Gegenpress my players rarely force a tackle or mistake for strings and strings of passes.

I notice a "play on the outsides" philosophy - some with short passes only, some with a bit more direct passes.
And that definitely meets with threads I've read in the Bugs section about central play - this actually is a ME pattern over what the AI favours more, and it's no central passes.

    Superb post - 100% agree.

Just reading through the last 3/4 pages post-update.  It seems that as the ME hasn't been addressed again in this patch, people are assuming that's it - but we don't know for sure.  I'm personally thinking they might well be still working on one last attempt to fix the ME - but again I don't know for sure.  SI have clearly taken a lot of heat.  That could have been mitigated by a short statement with the 20.4.0 release notes.  Either:

As a company with extremely high standards, SI acknowledge that the ME is not up to those standards.  Rather than rush an unfinished patch with this database update, we have elected to continue to work on improvements to the ME and hope to have something tested and released by the end of March.  We do understand the frustration with the ME and our team are working tirelessly to improve the product.  We would appreciate your patience while we continue our work and testing.  As ever, thank you for supporting the series and your obvious passion for our product.

    Or:

With the release of 20.4.0 this is, outside of any hot fixes required for game breaking issues, the last upgrade to either the FM20 database or ME.  While we have taken on board your comments and frustrations with the FM20 ME, we feel with the previous release it is a finished product we are happy with and meets our internally high standards.  Our development team will now switch focus to FM21 - a product which we are excited to develop and eventually share with our passionate and loyal fanbase.  We will of course continue to read feedback on the FM20 ME, and these voices will be heard as we start FM21 planning and development.  As ever, thank you for supporting the series and your obvious passion for our product.

I don't really understand how complex the ME is - but I do understand it's not easy, as I would understand it's complex to be the Governor of the Bank of England!  However, customer service is easy - be up front and open with your customers.  If the customer is seeing an issue (although not easy to see a consensus at times in this thread - it is very clear the vast majority don't think this ME is good enough) face up to it and then fix it; if you don't think it's a problem, say why you don't; if you can't fix it - tell us and you might have to offer say 15% off FM21 rather than 10% for pre-release orders.

Reading between the lines almost, I do get a sense of high standards within SI Towers - but that does need to be communicated way better with the fanbase.  I'm sure it's not easy taking the heat at times - but with excellent customer service, that would be better.

That would be greatly appreciated, but one could also read:

    1) SI admit they've released an unfinished game ---> not good for their image + they expose the ME team

    2) SI states they're content with the current title ---> not good for many users + it seems to save their image

Furthermore, we've been used to years of strict changelogs and even strictier phrases about ME in the changelogs.
I couldn't agree more with the fact SI should be more transparent about this.

I don't care that much about UI anymore, I care about the engine.
You can put the car body of a Ferrari around a Fiat engine, but Fiats are Fiats and Ferraris are Ferraris, so Fix It Again Team!

You won't miss any of those new instructions with FM17. Teams will normally defend narrower when ball reaches penalty area. I wonder how's LOE any different to what's been called simply Closing Down? Defensive Width option is good idea but it's implementation is poor or very one dimensional. All teams are using it with more defensive tactics which shouldn't be the case. It's use should be limited against narrow formations or against teams that have extra men in midfield. You never see team defending so narrow leaving flanks totally open.

If you're suggesting width sliders for each line (defense, defending midfield, midfield, attacking midfield and attack) then wow, that could be a great feature - but I'm afraid of its implementation.

All issues on all bugs forums are marked in the same way. We've stated on previous occasions that due to time, resources and the nature of software development that whilst we try to make sure every thread is responded to and every issue logged, some issues won't be addressed immediately. These we'll always aim to address for future versions.

I'm not sure what kind of feedback do you expect.  It's obvious that the main problem for most of the users who bothered to write here or in the bugs forum is poor state of ME. And you haven't changed it since january. Some of issues were reported when first version was released (5 months ago!) and are still unsolved...

Let's just be patient and see if there is going to be another match engine update and then start to murmur, at least now it's playable after the ui fix.

I'm just summing up those comments as a summary to their main topic - ME.

I think it's none of a fake news to say some of the issues submitted back at 1930ME time still is an issue in the latest FM20 ME, innit?
Some of the bugs have been tweaked - and I'm not saying how much - some have not.

What I personally find disturbing is that at a certain point FM19 ME bug fixing had been stopped since the ME team was fully working on FM20 ME.
Since as of March 6th 2020 some of the bugs coded back in 2018 still are in FM20's code, and since my guess is the ME team has started working on FM21 ME so that FM20 ME won't be fixed any further - and yes, I don't think of any hotfix regarding ME - then I'm reflecting about things.

I can say that if I hadn't already bought my copy back in October, I doubt I would buy FM20 today.

Just my 2 cents, no offence meant. I understand it's not an easy task to code properly but it also is frustrating to other users and me.

    1) There is no predicting how long it takes to develop them, really depends on the players. Its rather random but some things help such how close their personalities are helps (which is why it is always good to have a team of similar professionalism and determination.

    4) No. In fact a new feature in FM20 is that partnerships stay across teams and managers. Buy two partner players from a team and they will still retain their partnership in your tactic.

    1) They have the same exact personalities, so that shouldn't be a problem.

    2) Ok, that's what I knew. I would have guessed there's something else which somehow relates to this, but that's fine.

    4) So - if I get it right - since it's a new feature in FM20, in FM19 acquired partnerships are not retained if I as a new manager take over the team. That would explain a bit of things.

  5. Or whatever you call them, I'm not sure what's the exact word for that, so:

     1228871494_fulltactic.png.c3f7cbd601450cb4aab69a12f69e1a20.thumb.png.6d6dc1262e5bfbeb58e542e697579e2a.png

these green lines linking players who happen to share the same portion of the pitch (image taken from another thread).

Playing both FM19 and FM20, I still haven't got how these graphic representations of a functional partnership between 2-3 players work.

I had players who required just 10 matches to link to their teammates, some required about a season. Despite the tactic, I know these info are stored somewhere and show as links even with different formations, so there's sort of an alchemy which is recorded and associated to these players.

Now, I happen to be managing in an online career on FM19 where most of my footballers played together the first season (roughly 50 matches) + 6 preseason friendlies + another 10 matches with a manager, and then I came in as the new manager.

I'm now at november of the second season, and I can't see any of those lines. I find it quite strange, even more if I consider that 2 of my CB played enough match together and are National Team mates. I would expect them to show that green link.

    So, the main questions are:
    - how long does it take to develop this sort of a partnership?
    - how are those partnerships developed?
    - how can a human encourage or speed up the development of these partnerships?
    - does changing manager delete previously developed partnerships?

I believe the poster on Twitter was making the point that not all DoF's are created equal and that from club to club their roles, stature and power vary. For Miles to dismiss that by saying "we make a simulation of the real world" is very misleading in relation to the DoF as it currently stands in FM. Whereby the role is totally generic from club to club and offers no level of control in any regard. Thats about as far from simulating the real world as you could get IMO. As I pointed out yesterday, the addition of the Club Vision in FM20 whilst great, will be massively undermined if your DoF continues to recommend ageing players when your vision is to invest and develop youth, for example.

I see your point, but there's more to take into account - let me guess some: responsibilities in the club, club philosophy, DoF's attributes, Chairman's attributes, league/nation preferences and behaviour, and how all of the above is set in the database you're using. You could also have set some role in a way that doesn't suit your expectations. Of course you have to consider what the player's, the club's, your personal, the league's and the DoF's home and world reputations are, and how they relate to each other.

As far as I know, players' ages should be set in the Scouting section, and then the DoF should - but is in no way expected to - follow those criteria.
Just don't forget the DoF is a typical Italian role: the headcoach asks for a player capable of doing certain things, then the DoF selects some profile careless of age or whatever and submits them to the headcoach. If it's ok, then he starts negotiations. English football is used to have managers personally picking players and negotiating.
The kind of DoF you describe is something atypical.

I dont understand this snarky comment from Miles.

How is this "arcade"? Surely there are DOFs in real life who have more power than your average DOF and also DOFs who have less power.

It's just my interpretation, but I get that this Brett guy is substantially asking for a "can i haz change instantly how difficult will it be for my DoF to sign a certain category of players?"
Meaning "Hey, I'm Huddersfield Town. I want my DoF to sign Raheem Sterling, but he won't succeed. Can I pick a button and have my DoF to succeed? And even get back to the original difficulty level once I'm done with it?"

In this sense, Miles' words make sense - and I personally agree with him.

If you can mod the pitches, the balls. and the nets, surely it's not too much of a stretch to mod the other graphics in the 3d engline. Perhaps not.

What can be modified of pitches, balls, kits and nets are textures, which are not so damn hard to edit.

Stadiums and players in the 3D engine are models, and that's not what we end-users are allowed to edit. There's some serious work on 3D modeling programs people like me can't even work out.

A stadium editor leads to all sort of trouble with liceseing and all that. ALSO IT'S A MANAGER GAME why you feel the need to change stadium? Its a minor feature where only a minority of users want or will ever use. same for the database editor it's hardly use by majority of the fan base.

editing their club kits or logo is a simple xml file replacement not an entire 3D creator there's a big difference. The league and database editor is a tool used by everyone from si to players. Only players at this moment want a  stadium creator its catering for a niche of an already niche franchise where we have far more things to look at and improve on.

Almost a month late, but I feel the need to answer to this topic.

Stadium editor could be a major feature, if implemented in a decent way.
I mean, the database is likely to include info about what stadiums look like. Are they Olympic-style or just 4 stands around the pitch? Is it all covered or are there stands without any coverage?

And then, as effects in-game (and I mean apart from the graphic appearance), where will the public be? Will they prefer a cheaper stand even when it rains, or will they sit in the covered VIP-stand? Different prices could be set between different stands.
When renewing or building a new stadium, the management could choose the style of the whole stadium.

Or simply, think about lower league stadia. For instance, there are Italian Serie C or Serie D stadia with some 500-1000 people stands on one side only. Some have 2 stands, one of which is uncovered. I'd love to see that reflected in-game, and not seeing a small "perfect" stadium.

Eventually, stadium editor can actually bring Football Manager one step closer to realism - what's more, it's a feature that can be developed even from videogames that have 20+ years now!

A realistic match engine - you can not play true possession football in this game. Players refuse to follow certain instructions as the ME is not capable of delivering it.

I agree on most of these.

International Management is something that could be improved, but I've experienced it way few times.

Come to think of it, has FIFA or PES improved at all since about 2014?

I don't care too much of that - I personally still love Virtua Striker 2 and 3 - but I expect FM to costantly improve, even when it actually seems that it's not an upgraded DB and some slight UI change as I've seen in the past.

  9. Via pre-game editor, you can set a different 3D match kit - just copy the home kit, change what you need to change, and set it as kit number 0 selecting it to be used in UCL as choosen competition. It actually is easier to do rather than to explain it.
It should also be available via in-game editor.

What you cannot do - at least it's not been possible until today, and so it has been for years - is having your team showing different kits (I mean those downloaded from Sortitoutsi) according to the league or cup they're playing.

  10. I'd ask for a better local competition criteria.

If I want to create a Saxony, a Brandenburg, a Berlin and a Thuringia subdivision, which are all part of a football pyramid level, I'd rather have a "pick teams from region: Brandenburg AND region: Berlin" instead of a coordinates system which might include undesired zones (like Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in this case).

Currently, it happens frequently that teams from Sardinia join leagues in Lombardy, which is hundred of kilometers distant, increasing travelling expenses - that makes no sense to me.

    - vertical parent competitions as well as horizontal ones (e.g. The Football League as the parent of the Championship and Leagues 1&2, Lega Nazionale Professionisti as the parent of Serie A&B, Liga de Futbol Profesional as parent to La Liga and Segunda etc.) and/or the ability to set fixture, squad, transfer and discipline rules for multiple competitions at once and/or the ability for awards to consider players from more than one specific competition

Just to point that, Italian system has Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A for Serie A, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie B for Serie B, Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico for Lega Pro, Lega Nazionale Dilettanti for Serie D and the regional committees of Lega Nazionale Dilettanti organizing local leagues from Eccellenza to Terza Categoria. ;)

Why on earth should (would in your case) you pay for a tool used for editing the game you purchased in the first place!?

I've never seen a game editor being anything other than free. If anything, SI can be thankful for the modding community Football Manager has. Within a month of release, you can find most of the previously unplayable leagues free for download and ready to play. That brings A LOT of new content and much more choices to make when starting a new save.

Completely and definitely agreeing with this.

I see the editor as a game itself.

The content produced however should always be free!

Implying that one should pay to create custom databases and receive nothing in change. Pure logic.

Ok, official SI database is made up that way, but then if I revamp the Welsh system you either have to pay me for the content or SI for the editor.
