I always avoid subbing any defenders out if I still have a clean sheet, which is really tiring all of my defenders out. It was really hard to deal with when I got a mid-week game as well. and the most annoying part is when concede a late goal. because instead of subbing them out when they are tired to avoid conceding goals, I can't because their rating will stick at the same when match ends.
