You'll certainly be able to get a 1080p monitor, 1440p and 4k will be out of the question though.

Assuming you're in the UK, take a look at Ebuyer and see what sort of things are there.

    https://www.ebuyer.com/store/Computer/cat/Monitors?_sgm_campaign=scn_8766bc34ac000&_sgm_source=Monitors&_sgm_action=promotion

I'm actually from Sweden so have to look elsewhere. Do you recommend to pay a little extra to get a better monitor? Do the resolution I will have on the Mac Air sync with the display? I am totally lost here.. :)

    1) Zero difference.

    2) You've not defined a budget, the size of the screen you want, whether you're thinking of a TV or computer monitor, and what those other things are.  Doesn't really give us anything to go on, and to be honest displays isn't really my own area of expertise in any case.  In theory any TV or monitor would work but you'd ideally want the resolution to match that of your base display.

    3) Problems can arise with computers at any time for a number of different reasons.  In reality, 30 days should give you plenty of time to see how the computer works for you, but things can change as parts degrade and such like, but that sort of issue shouldn't crop up soon after purchase as long as the computer is handled correctly and not dropped etc.

Excellent! Maybe a computer monitor for around £200-250. I don't know if that's enough to get a good one.

  3. Three quick questions:

If I have to stick with the base model Macbook Air M1. How big difference will it make in FM 23 if I have 8gb ram instead of 16gb ram? (number of leagues I can run, processing time).

I am a bit unsure if the screen will feel too small. I'm thinking of buying an external screen. Any recommendations regarding an affordable screen to play FM on and among other things?

I will probably buy the Macbook Air M1 tomorrow and I'm allowed to test the computer carefully for 30 days before making up my mind. Will I have time to see how the machine runs or will eventual problems show up later when I have filled the computer with stuff?

Any Mac will run FM fine.

I'd recommend a minimum of 16 GB RAM - so in your case, I'd go for the M1 with 16 GB.

The upgrade to M2 does not have significant gains for FM, and with less RAM you will have more issues in the future.

With a Mac get the best you can afford - there are no (ZERO) upgrade options after you buy.

    Processor - M1 / M2

    RAM 16gb or more

Hard drive minimum 512gb (but 1TB recommended)

Thanks! Tomorrow I will buy a Mac Air M1, probably with 16gb ram. Looking forward to it :)

  5. So, I have read the whole thread from beginning to end. I am confused. My plan is to buy a new laptop, Macbook Air M1 or M2. Some people in this thread who run FM on Macbook Air say it run smoothly and beautifully and some people say their Macbook Air get too hot and lag.

Is there some conclusion to draw here? Regarding FM23 and Macbook Air M1 or M2?

    1) Over all, is it a good idea to buy a Macbook Air if you want to play some FM23? (I'd like the Macbook Air and like to browse the internet, watch films and do some writing. Basic stuff, but I also want to be able to play my beloved FM and to have a joyful experience doing that.

    2) I can only afford a Macbook Air M1 + upgrading to 16Ram or a Macbook Air M2 + base 8Ram. What do you recommend me to choose?

Question number one is obviously  most important.

I would be very grateful if some of you could enlighten me and give me your honest opinions. Thanks! (planning to buy on wednesday)

Based on that site, the M1 would be the stronger overall, although not in all tests and it's close.

https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/intel-core-i7-1250u-vs-apple-m1 That site also gives the M1 the edge.  Again, it's close.

So, it does seem to me the performance is similar, but with the Apple CPU just edging it.

Thanks, good to know! I will give it a few days more before I make up my mind.

See below for how the above benchmarking site scores the two 12th gen i7's available in XPS 13's against the M1 and M2 Apple CPU's.

Ok, I am not familiar with these charts. It was the last one at the bottom I looked at. Which is stronger out of these two then? The Macbook Air M1?

  8. While browsing the web yesterday and today and watching tons of reviews on youtube especially about the Macbook Air M1, I definetly lean towards that machine.

It would have been great if there was an opportunity to read from several users that have played on Macbook Air with M1 or M2. Easy then to get an opinion.

    I have just two worries:

    1) Is the screen on Macbook Air enough? Or will it feel too small?

I have recently played on a Dell Latitude at work and it had 14" inch screen and I was fine with it. Right now, I have bought a Lenovo Idea pad PRO 16" and testing it. It is certainly a great laptop with a fantastic screen and lots of power in it. Still, for my needs, I think I would more appreciate a smaller and more comfortable laptop to have in the sofa or bed.

    2) Still, a little bit unsure about if 16gb of ram is enough? I will probably never work with any heavy editing since I'm not into that.

Will 8gb be enough in my laptop in 3-4 years time? Everything with our computer seems getting stronger and need more resources and power.

Will 8gb on a macbook air m1 be able to run 20-25 leagues on Football Manager smoothly with a large database? Often my preference.

Should I get Macbook air m2?

I would be grateful for a lot of input and to hear your thoughts about it.

    Thanks!

The general advice with a Macbook is to go for the best one you can afford as you can't upgrade anything on it once you've chosen which one you're going for.

16GB RAM isn't necessary for any purpose currently when it comes to FM, but it may be for other things potentially.

Thanks! I read about that too. I plan to use the new computer at least 3-5 years. I plan to you see as I browse the web, watch films, play FM of course and do some writing on it.

I was also thinking of the Dell XPS 13, it has the same screen size, but a little cheaper, but seems to be a solid computer.

Yep, no fan so no noise. Yes, it gets warm. But that's how the Laptop works with no fan, it vents the heat around the machine. Thats the trade off.

It's really mostly is just the top of the laptop above the keyboard that gets hot to the touch.

Number of leagues depends on what type of game you want really. for 22 and 23 I was loading over 20 leagues. No issues worked fine.

Had a perfect experience playing FM on Mac, since I switched over from PC for FM 22.

Sounds great. I've got two more questions for you:

    1. When you played with about 20 leagues, what star rating did FM give you when setting up your save?

    2. Do you experience that the 13,3" screen is too small for playing FM? Do you think I should go for a 15" instead? I like it when it's handy, but just curious if I would find the screen too small.

  11. Hi!

Time for me to spend money on a new laptop. I've had Dell before. Considering continuing with Dell Latitude or try a Macbook Air, M1.

If I decide to go for the Macbook Air, M1.

    1. Is it then necessary to upgrade to 16GB RAM? Does it make a big difference playing FM23?

    2. How many leagues would you say I choose from when I set-up a new save? I have no idea, so I would be grateful if someone could tell me.

    3. I realized that this machine doesn't have a fan? Correct? Sorry if I'm a novice, but will there not be any noise then? Will it get hot during games?

    4. For those of you who have a Macbook Air, M1. How would you describe you game experience with this machine?

    Thanks, Anders from Sweden

  12. I have followed this thread with great interest. This season I have been fascinated by Mikel Arteta and his young Arsenal side. They play an attractive football and at the same time winning a lot of football matches. I must admit that I am a big Chelsea supporter since I was five years old. At the moment, I coach an under-21 side here in Sweden and I'm about to implement some of Arteta's ideas about positional play. I have watched Arsenal in educational purpose this season, but I'm not probably as informed as many of you guys here. Right now, I have a save in FM22 with Chelsea and here is my take on replicating Arteta's Arsenal.

When I watch some of Arsenal's games this season I see a dedicated and disciplined red team. When they defend in their own half it often to me looks like a 4-4-1-1. Martinelli and Saka are quick and disciplined to come back beside Partey and Xhaka. I have a question for you: The base formation we see on the tactics screen in FM, is that how the team defend in their own half or what? This would be great to know for sure, since it's the base formation.

With that in mind I set-up my team like this to replicate how well Arsenal's wingers track back. Watching Arsenal this season I often see Odegaard hovering in front of the midfield 4 and a little bit to the right when they defend. Then, if they have to defend really deep he sometimes seems to get back to the right in a 4-5-1 formation. Do you agree or am I wrong?

In my save I'm into the second season with Chelsea and in the beginning of this season I changed to the following line-up (transfers this season are Brahim Diaz, Musiala and Bastoni) trying to replicate Arteta's team:

I have followed this thread carefully and got some bright ideas and at the moment I have a team who is playing some magnificent football. The style is a joy to watch and also very successful so far. In my opinion, it's also reflects Arteta's style pretty well...

    - A back four with the same thoughts as many of you. James for White is a huge upgrade and Cucurella should interpret the inverted role well.

    - The midfield four:  In the Martinelli/Saka roles I have Sterling and Musiala as inverted wingers on attack. In the Xhaka role I use Mount as Segundo Volante with get further forward and move into channels. In the Partey role I use Kanté as a defensive midfielder with hold position.

    - In Odegaard's role I have Diaz who is located to the right with move into channels as a PI.

    - In Jesus's role I have Havertz who plays as a pressing forward. I have thought about training him to come deep to get the ball.

When I have two central midfielders in the defensive strata I am much more solid in the centre of the pitch. Combining that with Musiala and Sterling in the midfield strata I get a very compact midfield. I also have a higher defensive line together with standard line of engagement. This makes it even more solid and compact. Since I also have Diaz/Odegaard in a support role, I also get the benefit of him taking defensive responsibility.

What is important though, is that I still have an effective and dominating team in possession replicating Arsenal's current style with a rock solid defense.

I would love if you could comment and give me some more nuggets of useful information.

Isn't it great that you can use this forum to broaden your knowledge about how to set-up your team in real life :).

Thanks and keep up the good work guys!

P.s. I forgot to tell you that I use fairly narrow width. This because it seems to be a lot more effective when counter pressing and I get the impression that I more often and quickly win the ball back. Also, I have set-up my pressing scheme so we press the opponents' fullbacks inside. Sometimes I see a beautiful press where my winger comes in and also press the central defender from the outside so they have to hoof the ball up for us to easily get back.

Often we have a front 5 in attack with the inverted wingers stretching the pitch ok (PI staying wide) and Mount with his high work rate occupying the left half space (get further forward together with moving into channels) and Diaz/Odegaard taking care of the right half space. I don't use any roaming instructions since I want my players to stick to their zones as much as possible. How do you think the inverted wingers on attack would play if they also had the hug touchline PPM?

  13. Fantastic post! I'm managing my beloved Chelsea and I am tired of using a 4-3-3 formation. A back three fits the current Chelsea squad and it's fun to have a formation that resembles Tuchel's idea. I will start a new save with this tactic as a core idea and see if I can get a solid defense that is a threat on the counter and at the same time is dominating at Stamford Bridge.

I am really curious if the opening poster has continued with his project and if there are any updates on your save?

I have found that this tactic of yours works very well. In your opinion, what are the advantages with TI playing much narrower and also instructing your wingbacks to sit narrow and cut inside? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this. This is the opposite to Conte instructing his wingbacks to stay wider and attack down the line.

See SS for Tactic's general outline. It must be the same with your most updated one.

I don't use OI's. They undermine your tactical soundness, me thinks.

I tried almost all tactics here on different Mentality and Team Shape settings and your previous one was the best among them. It was shaky a bit but ever since I upgraded this season to the updated one, it worked wonders.

Edit: I also use Defending/Attacking Corner set pieces from one of the guys here since they matter a lot - I don't remember who. It's slightly modified, that's all.

Is this still your formation, roles and duties? I play the same but find it tougher in this second save. Especially having troubles with the big teams away.

Ever since I have moved my defensive line to "Normal", I have been a winner, became Eredivisie champions and made my way into Champions League group stages by eliminating Dinamo and Legia respectively.

However it's not a series of 1-0 or 2-0s anymore, I concede here and there however score in multitude.

Are you playing with standard and flexible or control and fluid?

I might be daft, but what do you mean by "see SS for Tactic general outline"? I'm from Sweden so maybe I'm not familiar with all expressions :). I understand now, I think. With SS you mean screen shot right?

What difference have you noticed when you play with standard, flexible compared to control fluid?

That's my 2nd season with Vitesse.

My first eleven (for comparative purposes):

    GK: Eloy Room

    CB(st): Victor Ramos

    CB(st): Nicolas Sanchez

    CB(c): Guram Kashia

    WBL(a): Charlie Taylor

    WBR(a): Maikel Van der Werff

    BWM(s): Sheran Yeini

    CM(s): Marvelous Nakamba

    CM(a): Navarone Foor

    AM(a): Nathan

    DLF(a): Walter Gonzalez

The guys in bold are original Vitesse players.

Nice work already in second season! Have you changed anything from the tactic? Do you use opposition instructions? Do you use control and fluid? I didn't concede many in my first season with Chelsea but I didn't manage 10 in a row without conceding. It's nice with with having such a solid outfit who is almost inpenetreable, don't you think? 😀. Almost like the real Chelsea during their best spell.
