    This is incorrect

Got an answer on this from Neil Brock

I spoke to someone and this is the jist of what he and I came to:

For how the game uses threads - it will create as many threads for playing matches and shortlisting as you have cores (including hyperthreads).

But the performance you see varies on the setup for example with matches - Quick Matches for instance (so for loaded but non-managed in leagues) it's are so fast anyway it gets to the point where it doesn't make that much more difference having more cores.

If you use detail level to set more stuff to full match you'll start seeing betters gains for more cores, but of course will still be slower than by just not having the league loaded, or having it at a low detail level.

Similar sort of thing with shortlisting the more / leagues players you have loaded the more benefits you can potentially see with more cores, however this is probably more than offset by the general slowdown from having more stuff loading as there's still a large portion of the game which is single threaded.

In regards to best processors, as a general guide we tend to suggest using the following comparison site as a good gauge of the performance capabilities - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

Basic rule of thumb is the higher it is on the list, the better it is. You can edit it to show processors for desktops and also those that are considered 'archived' via the restriction options.

Hope some of this is of use.

This is really helpful and good to know, thank you for sharing!

To add to what @Smurf has said, the primary reason I plumped for the Ryzen was the fact is has double the cores and threads.  The i7 does seem to edge it in terms of performance per core, but given there's twice as many it should handle the more intense tasks a bit better than the i7 does.

Either way though, you'd be getting a laptop with a very capable processor and I wouldn't see either as a bad choice.

    Brilliant, cheers again

This is the one I'd chose: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-14-5415-14-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-512-gb-ssd-silver-10230198-pdt.html

Quite a close call between that and the 4th link, but overall the CPU in that one seems to edge it.

    Top man, cheers Kev!

Glad you've suggested that one, is my preferred option. Hope not too technical but any obvious reason why the CPU on the Dell edges it? Not the most clue'd up myself but if i was to guess i'd assume that despite it having a lower base and max clock speed, something about how the Ryzen processor actually works and utilises its speed leads to it being better?  Reason I ask is that I've also read that FM is pretty CPU intensive although normally only uses one core, so not necessarily taking full advantage of Ryzen 7 5700u's 8x cores

  3. Afternoon gents,

Like everyone else, just looking for some guidance on a few laptops, primarily with FM in mind. Been trudging along with the same laptop for almost 8 years now so looking to upgrade. A few I’ve got in mind are below, all £700, 14” super sleek/light & ultra-portable, which is my priority. Graphics not really a concern, only play FM and even that on low settings.

    Dell Inspiron - 14 1514, AMD Ryzen 7 5700u Octacore 1.8/4.3GHZ, 8gb RAM.

    Acer Swift 3 - AMD Ryzen 7 4700u Octacore 2/4.1 GHZ, 8gb RAM

    Acer Swift 3 – Intel i5-1135G7 Quadcore 2.4/4.2 GHZ , 8gb RAM

    HP 14s – Intel i7-1165G7 Quadcore 2.8/4.7GHz, 8gb RAM

I presume all will run FM well, but just looking for your thoughts on the best bet. The Dell one is my most favoured as it stands, but open to thoughts.

    Cheers all
