Playing FM17 and am currently doing the 2022 World Cup Finals (which have been moved to June. In Canada!), and have a question for anyone who has managed in a World Cup tournament.
Holland are in a group of death with Italy and Uruguay, Australia being the weakest team. In the first round of matches, Holland have drawn with Australia (Kevin Strootman - this is FM17 remember - was sent off after 10 minutes, so it wasn't as bad a result as it seemed), Uruguay have beaten Italy.
Next round is Uruguay v Australia and Holland v Italy. You would expect Uruguay to beat the Aussies and qualify after 2 matches, so my question is, what should Holland look for in the second game? (I'm thinking of creating a manger profile, Leo Beencounter or something, and taking over mid-tournament, which would be a very Dutch thing to happen).
Beat Italy and obviously Holland qualify with 4 points, whatever Italy do against the Aussies... but if Holland get a point, a win against Uruguay would do. Would the AI play a weakened team for a country that had already qualified in the final group game, as might happen in real life? I wouldn't fancy Holland's chances against the first choice Uruguay, having watched them beat the Italians, but against squad players, I would back the Dutch first choice side. So I might be tempted not to go too attacking against Italy, rather than go for the win there. Has anyone played such a tournament and knows how the computer controlled teams manage their final group games if they've qualified?
