  1. Don't ignore player traits too.

Something like 'comes deep to get the ball' might in courage him to drop towards the CB's from a DM role.

You wouldn't necessarily then need to use him as a half back and could apply more of a playmaking role.

    A Regista perhaps?

  2. Personally I think there are too many attacking duties in your tactic, this naturally increases the level of risk these players will take.

You've also got 2 BPD's and a DLP who are hard coded to play more risky passes.

I'd change the IWB's to Su and change the CB's to normal CD's rather than BPD's.

This should reduce the risk the players take and help increase control of the game.

    I ended up getting fired...
The truth is that I really don't know what to do, I have no motivation. The essence of the game is to play with our own ideas and as such I don't like playing with tactics made by other people. I don't even like putting together a tactic using instructions to get around the game engine. I like to use real-life game principles and I'm not able to put together a winning formation. No matter how much I read about it, I still get more confused.

You have to remember that what you're dealing with is a game, it can't replicate real life and there are always going to be tactics that favour the match engine.

I've tried a lot of times to translate things from real life into FM without success.

You have to lean into what the match engine prefers a little bit, high pressing, counter pressing and counter attacking should give you a solid base and aligns with the style you wanted to play.

From there on its a case of finding a happy medium between how you want to play with the ball and how the match engine wants you to play.

  4. I'd go with a CWB-At on the left, he'll be hard coded to hold his width on the left, and you need a player on each flank doing that.

Add roam to the IF, and CM-At, I think the DLF will already have it hard coded, this encourages them to find pockets of space which will benefit the Positional Play style.

I'd also switch the BWM to a role that is hard coded to hold position, at the moment you run the risk of having only your 2 centre backs as your rest defence.

I've played him upfront at times but he's not the best in the air which I feel like you have to be to play as a lone striker in this version of the game

Maybe add some team instructions to encourage a different stlye of play, for example, he's quick so try pass into space, whipped crosses and dribble more.

Get the team to play to his strengths.

  6. His goal return is pretty solid for a wide player in a supporting role.

Perhaps changing him to an Attacking duty would see him more involved in the box and dropping deep less often.

Or you could play him in the ST position? His pace, movement and finishing are elite, having him out wide or in deeper positions doesn't make sense, especially when his long shots aren't great, which as an IF-Su he probably finds himself outside the box more often than not.

I find a back 3 with two IFB to be very stable! I would look at traits added to the IFB's if that's happening to you.

IWB is a bit more of a risk for defensive structure compared to a Libero(d).

But that's the 2 IFB's situation where you're probably playing with a Libero stepping into midfield.

The poster's tactic, and from my experience, is where you only use 1 IFB and the opposite full back joins the midfield or attack.

This is where I've had issues, players like Pascal Struijk who have no player traits and is selected as a CB-De often ends up in the left half space outside the oppositions box.

Edit: I've very quickly thrown together a tactic and 7 minutes into the highlights found 2 notable examples.

Again, Struijk is a CB-De with no traits to encourage him to get forward.

    He's number 21.

I both instances of the ball is tured over there's a very real possibility of a 2v2 situation on the counter.

The whole point of playing with a rest defence of a back 3 is to prevent this.

I adhere to this. They need the teamwork to follow instructions, work rate to do it no matter what and stamina to sutain it for the 90 mins. I would add aggression as a plus or bonus because is like their natural drive to be involved in challenges.

Yeah, attributes like Aggression and Acceleration are useful in a Gegenpressing system, but depending on some of the roles or positions they may not be necessary.

I'd say the 4 I mentioned are vital across all outfield positions.

Very curious where folks are at with a Sarri tactic in FM24 for sure.  The drive to replicate his tactic in FM seems to have decreased since he moved to Lazio.  It's still on my list for FM24 to come up with a Napoli '15-17 tactic, whether it's replicating his side with in form Higuaín or Mertens.  With this year's match engine,

I feel like there's a better fit for his flexible midfield and fullbacks.  Just have yet to see anything pop up on YouTube or on the SI site replicating this and I am a simpleton with tactics.

Here's what I have going right now in my first season with Venezia using a tweak of @tikitakamaster 's Sarri tactics from FM23 (thank you for all your work over the years!).  Talent on this Venezia team is definitely in the top 1/3 of Serie B, but by no means a powerhouse.  Real challenge will come in year 3 of this save when I've been promoted to Serie A and have a couple transfer windows to narrow the talent gap and acquire players more fitting of the Sarri roles (especially on the defensive and pressing side).

    • 2.22 goals/game (top in Serie B)
    • 1.74 NP-GX per game (top in Serie B)
    • Possession numbers are top 3 in Serie B at 90% completion and averaging just over 540 passes completed per match.
    • 4.2 chances created/game (top in Serie B)
    • 109 Final 3rd pass/game (top in Serie B)
    • XGA/game 1.338 (8th in Serie B)
    • 366 passes completed against/game (top in Serie B)
    • 88.8 Possession won per game (14th in Serie B)

I've been tinkering with a Sarri system myself over the last couple of days, simulated a season with Man Utd who I felt were in a similar place ability wise to what Sarri inhereted at Chelsea.

Found that I was extremely close to his Chelsea team in terms of Points, Goals Scored, Goals Conceded, Shots Per Game, Passes Per Game.

Even my leading scorers had similar amounts of goals.

It's not too different to yours.

  10. Unfortunately with a player like Abeid he's probably not going to get a good rating unless he scores.

He has poor work rate and team work, he can't pass. So hes limited to only really being able to positively impact the game if he's scored.

I personally have a lot of joy playing a SS behind an Advanced Forward in a 4231 with a Gegenpressing style.

Di Nicola should be pretty well suited to this role given his work rate and stamina, his finishing might be a little low for a top side in that role, but at 13 it's not bad.

One thing ive found about playing a holding midfielder deep as the playmaker is that they always seem to get pressed of the ball. I think it's because they're always, or seemingly always collecting the ball of the defenders with their back to goal meaning that they really only have 1-2 passing options (assuming the other pivot is marked properly). I think maybe a half back as a single pivot would work better as they drop in between the defenders, are facing up the field and have more passing options (two centre backs, fullbacks on either side then two (or more))

In the above, no 6 is the DLP in a double pivot and is something similar to what ive seen when I've played with one.

Now that's the 6 but as a single pivot (either as a HB or DLP-D as I think they both split the centre backs?) making the red opposition players having to work harder to press him/cut off passing lanes etc

    What's your experience with this?

I haven't really noticed any issues with my current set up.

With the much higher tempo my DLP doesn't tend to take long before the ball is moved on to someone else.

  12. The preset Gegenpress instructions are a really solid base to start from.

I use something very close to these.

What I will say is the RPM will venture forward a lot, and with 2 wing backs and 4 attackers you're likely to be left with only 3 players back when you're attacking, leaving you open to a counter.

My DM pairing is usually DLP-De BWM-Su to provide a bit more stability.

But I also play with a 10 so you might want some who's going to break into that open space in the attacking midfield area.

Maybe something to consider against tougher sides though.

  13. I'd be reluctant to have 3 play making roles in midfield.

It's common to break the midfield roles into a Sitter, a Runner and a Creator.

    So maybe the DM-De, CM-Su and AP-Su/At

You may want to consider have a BPD at the back if you have a capable player, so there are more players on the pitch who can't break the lines with passes, you don't need possession for the sake of it.

This is really attacking four :D

I'm really interesting about your defence and goals conceded. I played 424 with attacking priorities and it was the best scoring team and full chaos in defensive line

Surprisingly my defence is usually pretty strong.

I think the high press is the most effective form of defence on FM, and the back 4 and 2 holding players ensure we're never overly committed.
