  1. I'm a big fan of 4-2-3-1, dunno why, maybe because it's one of the most used formation in real football, probably alongside 4-3-3 and 4-4-2.But I find 4-2-3-1 very difficult to be implemented in FM.

I tried a lot of versions of 4-2-3-1 in my FM save which I started from unemplyed and in few years I am the Arsenal London manager.Changed two teams before Arsenal and i tried to play a lot of 4-2-3-1 at these teams, but I never had the satisfaction finding the right tactic.

I consider my self a veteran of this game.Playing since CM series, reading lots of guides, and never had such big problems like in FM21 in terms of tactics.

4-2-3-1 used to work very well following the principle of Cleon about the 4-2-3-1 which i consider the most accurate about this formula. But not in FM21 anymore.

Some people will say : "4-2-3-1 it's not for you mate, just leave it alone and try something else", but yea, I use other formulas too, the problem is that it has become an obsession to make 4-2-3-1 work fine.

So, long story short.Let's show you how my 4-2-3-1 look like and then I am waiting for your advices and how you use 4-2-3-1 in your saves.

I have two tactics for Arsenal.

The first one I named "pass and move" and I want my team to play some kind of tiki taka football, based on the fact that the players allow me to implement this kind of tactic, considering their technicall and mental attributtes.

So i want to play a cautios type of atacking, be patient, building our attack slow, lots of passes, lot of movement on the pitch from my players.Tiki take comes with an aggresive defending, so i tried to do that with a higher DL + LOE + more urgent pressing.

The second tactic, it's a direct counter attack one.Used against teams that are better than mine.

I started with an positive mentality, cuz i want my team to get the ball fast to the oponents goal with quick transition.I use LOE cuz I want to drawn my opponents in my half with a medium-low kind of defensive block, but aggresive with more urgent pressing.Told them to regroup when we lose the ball, because i want my defensive block to be formed in a short time.

I leave you the pictures with the tactics and waiting for your answers.

    Thanks,

The ranking at the end of the 21-22 season decides how many places each league in 22-23 will have to qualify for European competitions in 23-24. So I'm guessing in your save the Belgian teams had some rubbish performances in the first couple of seasons, and in Summer 2022 had fallen to 16th or lower, in which case this is correct. In the new format, there's a big, big difference between 15th and 16th - once you fall to 16th, you only get one UCL qualifying spot, and no Europa places - the only way to enter the Europa is if the league winner gets knocked into it from the Champions League.

Make sense now. Thank you very much for your answear.

  3. Hello guys,

I am on season 2022 - 2023 in my carrer, managing Anderlecht Bruxelles from Belgium.I finished in the third place last season, but I only managed to get a qualification to Euro Cup 2.The winner of the league had a spot in Champions League playoffs and the second spot (Genk), also got a spot like me in Euro Cup 2.So, no team for Belgium in the main competition of Euro Cup, which seems unreal. Is this ok considering Belgium is in the 11 position of european nation rank and last year was in the 12 spot and had teams in first Euro Cup

  4. Starting unemployed.

    Reputation : Sunday League player

Coaching badge : National B license

Getting my first job at Elverum, a norwegian club from fourth norwegian league.Getting two promotions in a row in two seasons and I decided to change the team after that because my president didn't backed me up.

Getting unemployed.Hoping to catch a dream move to a team from first norwegian league fighting to avoid relegation or something similar in another mid-tier country, but suddenly Borussia M'Gladbach and Leverkusen aproached me.

It's so unrealistic. You will never see that in real life.

The reputation system seems broken.I started with half a star reputation or 5% out of 100% and now i have 2 and a quarter of a star or 45% reputation and I got such an offer.

Have you experienced something like this ?

  5. This year game have 0 sense to me.

Played 12 hours, about half a season and everything seems unreal.

Played 17 games, concedeed 25 goals, at least 20 goals we're after balls over my defenders.I tried everything, but nothing seems to work.Same scenario over and over again. One of their midfielders take a long pass over my central defenders and their striker are 1v1 with my gk.

Had a very good start of a season, leading the table and suddenly my team start losing 4-0, 3-0, 4-1, 4-2, like they dont know how to play football anymore.Losing against low teams at home.Accidents happens in real life, but not like that.when you start to lose a game in this FM, it seems like you can't turn the situation.

17 and 18 years old players from my u19 team complaining that i'm not starting them in the first eleven of the first team.

    Unreal.

  6. Played first 2 games with new patch.

10 goals, 5 for me, 5 for opponents. All of them from crosses. It's not Set Piece Manager anymore, it's Crossing Manager now.

It's crazy how excellent crosses are in the third norwegian league and how clinical the headers are from mediocre players with at most 1,80 m height.

It seems like Beckham is always crossing and on the other side we have a combo of Zigic/Crouchie.

This scene of Mr Bean is the best example of how SI is trying to improve the ME. :)

I gave up ! Waiting for FM21.Try to focus only on match engine, please! We don't need new features. The game will be perfect with a stable and realistic match engine.

I see. I’ve also seen this set up before somewhere. The poster highlighted that it was important to have someone on the back post to pick up any flick ons, in this case your DCR made, if he wasn’t banging them straight in with his head.

There are many quirks to this game. Last year it was long throw ins ...

Wish I saw the sorts of stats you’re getting from your LB. He’s possessed...

I use this setup from FM17.Always had good results, but after this season I will change it, cuz it seems more like an exploit.

In fairness 13 for both, at the level you’re playing at, is massive. Regardless, you’ve obviously managed to hit on something with your routines for those sorts of stats. Any chance you could share them?

This is my routine for corners. It's the same from left side.

For free kicks I have the default setup.

I agree that 13 for both are good for the level I am playing at the moment, but I still think this is to much.

Ok, maybe he can cross that ball perfect most of the time, but the finishing from other players is insane.

  9. One more confirmation that this year Football Manager is more like set piece manager.

My fullback which is the corner taker from the right side (for inswing) and my taker for freekicks also right side have 21 assists.

He's only 13 at corner taking and free kick taking.

Imagine if i had David Beckham in FM20 ...

I'm curios how many assists Trend Alexander and Robertson had the last season. It's unreal for a left back to have such insane stats in only 25 games.

LE : I play him as a WB(De) in a 4-2-3-1.So not to much assists from crosses.

  10. Got this guy for my Lyn Oslo side.

He's playing for Elverum in the third league of Norway.Seems like a gem.

Bought him for 2k and he wanted to downgrade a league just to sign with me.Also, great personality and he is not injury prone even with that natural fitness.

I dunno if you can find him if you don't load Norway leagues.

  11. I tried to make a 4-2-3-1 in Fm20 and it was such a pain.

But, from all things i tried i saw that a combination of DLP(S) and a BBM(S) works great for 4-2-3-1.But you should have proper players to cover the roles.

If you play with a defensive duty in your central midfield, your team will be dominated on winning posession at the mid and also your players will stay to deep when you attack. So imo use hold position PI on a CM(S) if you don't want to use a DLP(S).

So, I came with a solution to this if you have a lower team like mine. I put a fullback on defend duty(the one on the same side with your BBM).

So right now a good setup for 4-2-3-1 should be something like this :

                            DLF(A)

    IF(A).                SS.            W(S)

                   BBM.       DLP(S)

    WB(D).        CD.       CD.        FB(A)

I still have problem creating a good partnership between my AMC and Striker, but the setup above seems decent.

IIRC, it's straight after the last fixture of the round that the draw is made for the next round.

    No.

I saved the game just after my last game(which was a league game) and the draw was after 2 days.I never got the same opponent and I tried fourth times.

Maybe you get the same opponent if you save one day before or in the same day of the draw.

Doesn't the Norwegian Cup have a rule where the first two rounds are set up by the Norwegian FA?

As a result, they draw the teams in the top division against weak sides for the first two rounds?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Football_Cup

"The first two rounds are set up by the Norwegian Football Association, and the top flight teams are usually pitted against fairly weak amateur teams, often in rural areas, on the amateur team's home pitch."

Yea, seems like it should be that way, but I had Valerenga on the first round at their stadium.

At the fourth draw I got Skjetten SK, also a fourth league team like me.Anyway i will be back at the original save and play Valerenga at their stadium.Maybe next season!

    Wish me luck guys!

  14. Played like 4 seasons (all of them in Norway) in this FM until now and i always choose to play small teams.

First save i tried with a third league and now i play with a fourth league team, Lyn Oslo.

In all of 4 seasons I had the hardest draw possible in Cup games. It's unbelieveble how the game always choose the hardest opponents possible. In 4 seasons, first round, 3 times against first league teams, one time against second league team.

In the first round you have 128 teams and I always get a first league team like Rosenborg or Valerenga. Also, I don't understand the rules for Norway Cup, but the games are always away.So no advantage at all.

Considering that I have a small team the cup is a very good opportunity to make money for my balance and it's really frustrating that you always get the hardest opponents possible.

I am the only one so "lucky" or the game is that rigged ?

Have you ever experience something like that ? Cuz I find it hard to believe it's coincidence.

  15. Played about 20 games with Beta match.Pre-season games + first offical game (cup game against a weaker team) which i reloaded few times to see how ME works. And my conclusions are next :

Defenders behave better, but still they are giving a lot of balls to the opponents when you defend and always the highlight have to end with AI bad finishing or scoring.

For me, it seems like AI exploits the ME, in particular when you play against lower teams. They always find crazy shoots, or crazy tiki taka passing, or even insane crossing to score. Also they rate to score it's at least 50%.In 2 chances, they will score at least once.I wouldn't mind if it where the same for my team, but when i played a stronger side, i never had the privilege to be so clinical.

Lots of goals from long shots.

About crossing, AI always cross to the far post and in most of the time the crosses are just perfect.Watching the AI players ability to cross, that's unreal, cause they have under 8 crossing skill. In the meantime, your wingers are always skeptical when they have a clear opportunity to cross. But, still is an improvement to the latest patch.

AMC is useless, better not use it.I tried to use him in different roles, but nothing works fine. Also, it seems like your central players doesn't want to pass him.I found that AMC as a second striker works pretty decent and that's pretty much all you can get from this role.

90% of the highlights are starting with a set piece and I don't know if I scored more than 5 goals from action in these 20 games.Lots of goals from set pieces and lots of corners. And yeah, never had a goal from central play and I tried a 4-2-3-1 for this save.

If SI can solve those problems the game will be pretty good. It's clearly an improvement from the latest patch, but I still think it's frustrating to play with this ME.
