If he leaves now it leaves us in the lurch a bit. Stay for another 2 years and get a succession plan up and running
Well surely it's the FA's fault if they don't have a succession plan in place? He could have bombed out in the group stages (unlikely, I know) and resigned/been sacked or he could have won it and retired. He's also been in post for six years which is a hell of a long time for a England manager these days

Whilst those are clearly the doings of an edgy 15 year old there was a clear bias towards the French imho. I think there’s been a not particularly subtle bias towards the traditional ‘big’ nations and players throughout the tournament tbh.
England notoriously not one of the big nations in football.

How many of those goals were from a long ball over the top and the centre halves just stopped running and stood still watching the ball?

I think there was an element of this tonight. Possibly trying something out with the knockouts in mind, given that we have had limited preparation time and we knew we had three points already in the bag from Monday.
Cede possession a bit but set up to try and stifle the opposition. And he’s done it with four at the back instead of his usual five and limited
USAboth sides to one shot on target all night.Clearly need to sharpen up going forward, but imagine if tonight gives him the confidence to play a back four against France or Argentina, and push another body higher up the pitch.
Fixed that for you

I was just speaking in terms of a UK citizens view, as there are others of the same nationality with eyes towards republicanism.
Yeah, but if Australia want to become a republic then I don't think "sorry mate, what about HoL reform first for us Brits" is a valid response.
And this whole "we can't do x because there are bigger fish to fry" reasoning is infantile anyway. Governments can and do address multiple issues simultaneously.

You can't fix every issue, and there are bigger constitutional issues as far as I'm concerned, such as an unelected second chamber, in the UK.
Not sure Australians give quite as much of a **** about the House of Lords in the UK as they do about being a republic.

Sometimes things get too personal on here. I'm in half a mind to report this.
Do it, we need a zero tolerance policy for this sort of thing. I still haven't recovered from the reputational damage of being called a Celtic fan a few months back.

Aye, he'll just tan 20 cans of cider and jib in at the airport. With a flare stuck up his arse.

I think we all suspect stewards can't really do anything (and presumably are legally limited on what they can do physically anyway?).
Yeah, one of the videos circulating before the game showed fans rushing through outside the stadium itself and one particular steward basically kicking the legs out from under fans trying to run past him, and I did think that was surely very dodgy ground, legally speaking.

Because they never really get told no. There's never any real consequences for it and we often dismiss by saying they aren't real fans. They are, they just happen to be scumbags as well. Football has this as a problem in ways that's so much worse than any other sport and we need to deal with that too. You hear lots of fans support groups saying football fans get overpoliced, but the second we stop it's absolute carnage.
100 percent this. Not singling out England here but there's a real problem with their football fans and it needs to be confronted, not handwaved away by trying to claim that troublemakers aren't real fans. They are, they just happen to be scumbags as well.

Out of curiosity- how many penalties has McGuire taken in his career? His was without doubt the best one but I don't recall him as a regular taker.
Maguire had taken fewer than ten pens before Sunday night iirc.
There was a tweet the other day listing the penalty record of the England side, player by player, and it was notable how few experienced penalty takers there were.

Gareth's way has worked, but it's fine margins, it's always going to be fine margins if you play for the 1-0 win. I would not be at all surprised if we get dumped out of the World Cup at the last 16 stage, would that suddenly make Gareth a bad manager who needs changing?
Going out at that stage, in and of itself, wouldn't make him a bad manager, but replacing him would depend on the context. If it's due to not making the right subs, being too cautious, not creating any meaningful chances for your star striker, then maybe it would be time for a change.
To be fair it'll probably be time for a change anyway. Three tournaments is pretty good longevity for an international manager, and exceptional for an English one!

If he doesn't want to be attacked then he just needs to change his behaviour.

Any doubts anyone had about Southgate should be gone now Rod Liddle has spoken
Yeah You would have to ask yourself the question: what the **** does Rod Liddle know about football? Or about being a nice man, for that matter.

Surely nobody who watches football regularly actually thinks the referee was biased?
Chiellini tackle on Saka is never a red card on the halfway line and there’s another defender in shot so he wasn’t even the last man. It is scummy but it’s part of the game, if we’d be more counter attacking throughout with our pace we could’ve put him on a yellow earlier in the game and made things more interesting.
Chiellini's foul was 100% cynical and 100% a yellow, but never anything more than that. Just a classic case of a defender taking a card for the team. He knew exactly what he was doing but it happens all the time in football.

This is absolute ********. They are fans, of course they are FFS. You see this line being pushed all the time in an attempt to avoid having to confront the fact that some England fans (and this isn't unique to England, of course) are awful people.

It goes two ways I think. If Kane drops deep then you should be playing Rashford more often. It's also why Sterling is just so vital. Or you switch the other way with more aggressive centre mids. When that link disappear second half either we need Rashford on for Mount, or we need to change the midfield a bit and get Kane further up the pitch
Just needs a bit of tweak to the balance of the side - which is really one of the main purposes of making subs, isn't it?

England have that in Rashford, which is why it was a surprise he didn't come on much earlier
I do think that Southgate is very conservative with his attacking options, and this is most noticeable with his subs. I totally get building success on a solid platform but sometimes you have to press the advantage and one of England's main strengths is their attacking players. But maybe it's that link between defence and attack that's the problem area - when Kane is having to drop back into midfield to spray it around then something isn't quite right. He's a top quality player but surely he's there as the focal point of the attack?

Nobody ever does that about England or Millwall fans so we're all good there
Are you actually arguing that two wrongs make a right here? "They do it so I will too" is pretty immature. If anything I would have thought your perspective would make you less eager to generalise, seeing as it pains you so much
And you don't need to tell me about Millwall fans - my mum's entire family were and are Millwall
