Has anyone tried these principles on FM 24? With the new IFB working as a third CB there could be some interesting ideas.

Just tried it with a 4-3-3 DM Wide, with one IWB(A) and one IFB(D) to either side of the centerbacks. Mezzala on one MC, CM on the other. Wingers on the flanks, widest possible setting on the In Possession screen (trying to emulate Girona's tactics). Looks almost right, the only trouble is that the LB (IWB) doesn't seem to want to join the MCs in the line of 3 behind the striker - he stays abreast of the DM instead, creating a 3-2-2-3 instead of the 3-1-3-3 I want...

just looking at these stats is very misleading. If you watched the games or go into details in the stats you will notice that the pass percentage in the defensive third is usually high (in my opinion because pressing has never worked properly) and then when the ball transitions to the middle third there is more mistakes, more tackles etc. So it's not that every team is good at passing, it's more the fact that they are allowed to do so without too much pressure

I don't want them to take the "easy" route to fix it by making players in the defensive third hoof the ball for no reason when they are not under any pressure like in FM23 and FM21 especially. I want them to do it by making players press properly

Yeah I get what you mean, but i *still* think pass completions in the attacking half are way too high. It's a bit harder to find that stat from FM, but here's one match where FC Osaka had 82,3% successful passes in the attacking half. Only 11 passes were intercepted (Orange) , none were blocked, 23 were mishit (Yellow) and didn't find a team-mate and 4 went out of play (Red). Compare that to 177 successful passes (Green). I find that hard to believe for a team in J-League2. So I think that defensive positioning and pressing close to own goal, especially in a set piece situation, are a bit too slack. Either that or Passing 8 is almost the same as Passing 16 when the match engine is concerned.

  3. One thing that seems off for me is that even crap teams are great at passing.

This is J-League 2, second season. 3 teams as good as City at passing? The worst team completing 79% of passes is too high. Might explain why defensive tactics do nothing to stop goals coming through. Another thing that seems a bit off is that the finishing is too good - most teams are overperforming vs xG.

  4. Pretty awful first half, better second half from Sweden. Pretty impressive that it's so hard to score against us considering what players we actually have - a back four of Lustig, Danielsson, Lindelöf and Augustinsson isn't exactly awe inspiring. But I guess the tightly organised non-adventurous midfield helps. Will be very surprised if we make it past the first round after the group stage though.

  5. Has anyone else come across this weird thing I just noticed? My centre back pairing have the best average ratings in the whole team (7.11 and 7.19 respectively), but the tactics screen says that they have a poor partnership and have played poorly when paired together? That seems counterintuitive as they've played almost every match together and have the highest average ratings in the team. Bug or poorly implemented calculation of average ratings for central defenders? We have shipped quite a few goals this season.

  6. Since you're going to be much better at squad building than the AI, the key is to use that to your advantage. Focus on building a strong central backbone (GK, DC, MC, SC) and above all tailor your tactics after your resources. No point playing tiki-taka if your players are non-league material. What worked for me this year was finding a really rapid striker, pair him with the tallest striker you can find, play 4-4-2 somewhat direct and abuse the pace 4 defenders you'll find in the Conference. If you can find one MC with decent passing attributes that helps as well - set him as the playmaker and make sure the others are feeding him the ball. I'm on my fourth season in the Premier League with Dulwich Hamlet and I've managed to gain Champions League football this season.

Oh, and once you start to move up the leagues, pester your chairman for training and youth facilities upgrades ALL THE TIME. Also, change tactics once you get better players. I'm also particular about ONE thing - no low Determination players at all are welcome at my club. Not even youth players - they poison the others with their weak minds.

  7. 95th minute of the attached PKM. Forest gets a counter attack after a corner, look at the leftmost defender of Dulwich Hamlet. For no reason at all he decides to sprint to the right to mark a player who is in a much less dangerous position than the ball carrier who he was previously marking. Ball carrier gets a free run at goal because of this. Mental mistakes do happen but this looks way too unrealistic to be a normal mistake.

  8. By its very nature a computer simulation of a footballer has to rely on randomization. In essence it works as an RPG - in a given situation, how does the game decide whether a midfielder spots the late run of an opposing player into the penalty area and if that player is hard-working enough and tactically astute enough to track that run? It depends on attributes of course, but by necessity it also includes random chance into the equation. How does the game decide whether a shot is on target or not? Attributes + external factors + random chance.
