  1. Honestly, I think I'm just going knock FM24 on the head if this doesn't get sorted. Once you notice this in-game you won't be able to unsee it and it will drive you mad.

You just can't press high and consistently have high possession like almost all top teams do in the world. If the opposition manager's style of play is passing it around the back you will struggle to get 55+ possession at home, even against far weaker teams. You players have no urgency to get the ball back and ignore the opposition instructions you have set.If you want to achieve that style of football it's just not possible.

There are a couple of posts pointing out essentially the same issues and SI hasn't responded or responded with just a token response.

  2. I do wonder what you have to do to get SI to respond.

Pressing is still absolutely atrocious in the current version, Pi and Ti honestly don't seem to do anything, "Prevent short GK distribution" I'm convinced is just cosmetic, you max out all pressing settings and the whole team should be at least another 15 yards up the pitch. So frustrating.

I really hope they haven't just written off patching FM24 and are just going to wait for FM25 because it's looking that way.

  3. There are a few threads covering essentially the same issues and SI have barely responded to any of them.

Since it's been brought up I can’t not notice it when playing the game now and it's doing my head in. If you’re away from home and the opposition team is playing 3 in the back you can just wave goodbye to high pressing and possession football because it just seems impossible. I have a theory that even on a neutral ground, such as a cup game if it shows you as the “away” team you seem to have a disadvantage.

  4. Second this, probably along with a lot of other people.

I try to do the same with varying success, such as getting my striker and AMC to press high/ tight mark the centre backs and force them to play down their weak flank, but instead of my AMC sitting tight and pressing high on the CB he will just stand on top of one of their defensive midfielders and not press, even though I am explicitly telling him to do something else.

  5. Reading what the legend Passion4FM has written, and he knows more than most, it seems to be a pressing issue just as much as a passing issue. I am watching my games just screaming at my players to actually press, even though I have all the settings maxed out.

I think with a few more tweaks though this could be the best match engine ever so let’s hope for a positive response.

  6. Just like to add another screenshot. Playing at home against 19th-placed Las Palmas who were a man down from the 4th minute still managed to get 88% pass completion! I don't care who the manager is to get 88% pass completion at the Camp Nou with a man down for most of the game and not a single shot is ridiculous. Also, the tactic I played is designed to have high levels of possession and to only get 55% in these circumstances doesn't seem realistic, especially considering in the game before I played 4th in the league and had 76% possession.

I think there are a lot of AI managers playing with IWB/IFB or both, these roles make it really hard to press high for the opposition.

The problem is that not every team has the required players to do that, and not every manager is playing possession football. But somehow, there are lot of teams that do not fit the bill like mid-table teams, relegation candidates, which even if they do not have the players to do so, play with IWB/IFB and don't get punished for this.

Other problem is that even good teams that are not known to be playing IWB/IFB nor possession football, which turns into tiki taka teams in FM24 for no reason.

Finally, I do not think that the marking system enables central midfielders to mark out DMs, or full backs before they come to their level on the field, which by then is too late. Therefore let's say you want your midfielders to mark out the IWB and the DM to high press the defenders, in this edition you can't do that as the midfielders will not mark them until the other team progresses high enough.

I agree with you but the AI manager play style is a huge factor. I think it should be, but not to the degree it currently is.

I've played around with it and for example; you put a manager like Guardiola or another manager who likes to dominate possession and put him in charge or a team that is predicted to finish 20th, over the season they will be in the top 3 in terms of average possession and even dominate possession against the best teams in the world.

I’m not sure what the official SI take is but the AI can essentially “cheat”. A couple examples would be; if I notice my playmaker being marked i will make another player my playmaker and as soon as the ball goes out of play, even if I haven’t been in possession of the ball he will be instantly man marked. Another example if I put my assistant manager in change for a game (and change his stats to have the intelligence of a gnat) he will play an unimpeachable game of football and achieve the results and kind of football I’ve been trying to do for a whole season.

  8. Well, I’m still not having much luck with the new update.

Away I get at best 53% possession against far weaker teams. As someone said, it doesn’t seem to have much bearing on how good the opposition team is; if the AI manager wants possession, they get it. They can have players who have poor composure and limited technical ability but dominate possession against the best team in the league.

Considering that this is a "major update" it seems like it's going to stay with way for a while unfortunately. It's a great shame because possession is king again in football but so difficult to recreate on FM.

  9. Is this still under review? I think the match engine is very good actually and if SI also believes it is balanced and doesn’t plan any big change for now it would be nice to know. Don’t really want to spend my time trying to implement a style of football that doesn’t seem compatible with the current match engine.

I know it’s not a black-and-white issue like that and you’re busy people and have many other areas of the game you have to work on. Many thanks.

  10. What I don’t get is that the AI seems to have no trouble keeping possession; when I put my assistant manager in for a game my team completely outplay the opposition winning 4-0 with 70% possession but when I play it I get 42% possession and lose.  The other day I played one match and couldn’t touch the ball, then I put my assistant manager in charge for the same game, same tactics and same lineup he gets 78% away from home winning 2-0!!

Mind you the FM 23 and FM 24 match engine is far better than previous ones which was like pulling teeth trying to get your players to do anything .

  11. I'm no expert but il add a pkm too.

It says i had 48% possession but looking at the game it looks like I had more.

It seems my players just don't press enough even though my TI's are all maxed out. In the game before this, I played against Man U and had 62% possession.

I'm sure it's just my tactics but I've had quite a lot of games and the possession stat doesn't seem right. Like I said I'm no tactical expert but this tactic is designed to keep possession and I am a far superior team. Many thanks.
