  1. I'd say he's probably best suited as a left-sided CB in a 3 (whether that's for you or someone else). He's got some good general attributes (Bravery, Decisions, Determination), and some decent defensive attributes which will most likely improve as he develops (Tackling, Anticipation, Positioning). His height certainly isn't ideal for a CB but at 18 he may well grow another inch and his Jumping and Heading aren't terrible. Biggest issues are Technique and Work Rate, but as a CB, and with his good First Touch and Determination those shouldn't really be a major issue.

Incidentally, best regen CB I ever had on FM was only 5'11. He was basically the German Franco Baresi though.

  2. Worth remembering with youth development that Ajax aim to graduate 3 youth team players for the 1st team every 2 years (ie 1.5 players per year). That's not star players, that's just 3 first team squad members across a 2 year period. And this is at Ajax.

How many current top-flight players came through the youth system of your nearest top-flight club? I'll bet in the majority of cases it's less than Ajax's 1.5 per year.

Also, does anyone ever come on here complaining that they had three 5-star players in a single youth intake which is just totally unrealistic?

I received a mid-season raise last year to 90K/year. So I moved out of the studio apartment and leased a one-bedroom flat, but still within walking distance of Canons Park and The Hive.

Hahaha, I used to live here, it is indeed within walking distance of The Hive. Not sure the Three Wishes would be my choice of pre/post-match pub though.

Having similar problems. Though I have seen signs of the wingers tracking back. My main issue from the goals I am conceding seems to be more down to terrible marking, just none of my centre-backs are picking up players.

I've been done by the ball over the top several times, despite having a centre back in the right position but he just drifts away from the player and had similar from very deep crosses, little to no marking of players they should ve marking tightly,

Well after a day of playing around to make this work i just gave up on the initial formation because i can´t make it work to defend the flanks, i couldn´t find a way to make it balanced enough to defend the wings and the AI will exploit it obviously and that cost me a lot of games where i was better in every aspect but couldn´t handle the occasional wide ball :-(

Having played (and experimented with) this system for a good few seasons, I'd suggest that your problems may not be down to the tactics, but more that you're asking the players to do more than they're capable of. Any system has strengths and weaknesses, and the main weakness with this system is that because you commit your only wide players high up the pitch, it can  - as you've found - be vulnerable on the counter. Obviously you can drop your wide players deeper, but then you lose much of their attacking contribution. The only way I was able to solve this was by improving my squad and finding CB's who were capable of coping without full-back cover.

When choosing CB's for this system, especially the outside CB's, I'm primarily looking for players who can cover large areas of the pitch by being in the right place at the right time. I first look for high Anticipation and Positioning, then Concentration, Decisions and Acceleration. If the player has high numbers in these five attributes, then I know that they'll be able to get to a long pass out wide before the opposition winger does 80-90% of the time. When I play backups and youngsters who aren't quite suited/ready for this role, then I see that vulnerability re-appear.

In addition, I do tweak the system when playing against really good sides, generally by dropping the mentality from Standard to Counter, and the D-Line from Much Higher to Slightly Deeper. I also set my wingers to man-marking duties if the oppo are players with wingers. While this doesn't mitigate against counters, it does encourage them to track back further and create a proper back-5 when out of possession.

Just to play devil's advocate here for a moment - if you are using man marking to force your advanced wide players to sit deeper, it's possible you are using the wrong role/duty for those players and/or an overly aggressive mentality.

I wondered if anyone would query this :) I'm experimenting with O-zil to the Arsenal's 3-4-3 at the moment, and like others I've found my team vulnerable to the opposition playing long diagonals to the flanks. After trying a few other things, I discovered that getting my wingers to man-mark opposition wingers solves the problem and turns them into real box-to-box players, their W-A role/duty encouraging them to get forward, and the man-marking forcing them to track back diligently rather than staying up the pitch.

Only problem is the issue detailed above. Beginning to suspect it's a bug though, because my right winger is always on the correct oppo player, but for some reason a formation shift for the opposition sends my left winger into a marking duty on a central midfielder.  Can't think of a reason why that would be intentional unless it's tracking the TC shirt (rather than the player if you see what I mean), but then why would you want that to happen?

It can be frustrating not to be able to change on the instant with something like that- I wish it were possible to do. I have been burned a few times by not being able to make a change I wanted until the ball went out of play. What about marking the specific man? Have you tried that? Another thing would be not to mark anyone specific, but set the player you want to mark to tight marking and he will naturally stick close to the man that it is in his zone.

Yeah, there must be a setting that mimics the "mark the most advanced player on your flank" instruction you'd perhaps give a player irl. Difficulty is that the defensive positions of my wide players is quite advanced so I'm using marking duties to force them to sit deeper and cover the opposing wingers. I'll have a play with marking duties and see what happens. Cheers for the suggestions.

Keep the formation widget open and as soon as they change, go to your tactics and make the changes. Either take them off specific marking duties or change them to mark a specific player at game start so even if he moves up to an AM winger he'll be covered, or manually change as soon as you can get the tactics screen open.

Even with their formation up on screen, if they shift immediately after we score, then any subsequent change I make has to wait until the ball goes out of play. Already dropped 4 points this season while waiting for that to happen (and it's only Oct 2nd).

Been setting marking duties after kick-off and not pre-game, but I've just tried that and it seems to make no difference, my wide player still starts to mark a central midfielder. Hmm, there must be something else I'm missing, it's hardly the most complex thing in the world.

  8. Having trouble conceding goals due to man-marking duties being screwed up by opposition changes in formation. Am I missing something in how I'm setting things up?

So for instance, I set my wide men to mark mark the oppositions wide midfielders, but then we score, they shift to playing with two wingers, and suddenly one of my wide men is now marking a central midfielder, they immediately play a long crossfield pass, and their unmarked winger scores at the back post.
