The higher star rated the competition the better, the more games he plays the better, the higher ratings he gets the better.

Not all of these may be possible at the same time. He may get better ratings a level lower, it's up to you to judge if this balances against playing a lower standard of football. I'm not aware of any in-depth testing of ratings vs level of league as regards ability improvement.

EDIT : I forgot one, I've seen people suggesting that the loan club having a manager with a high "Working with youngsters" stat is also helpful, I don't know if that's true, but it sounds reasonable.

I've only just spotted that sometimes, when I discipline them for a "poor performance", my players Determination will instantly rise by 1 point.

I've heard, but not yet seen, that disciplinary measures for violent behaviour can reduce Aggression.

So, stupid question is - what is the full range of attributes that can be affected in this manner, how is it done, and how common is it?

Perfect start to any game. Check the timeline in the bottom left for the inevitable result of hurling yourself two-footed at the guy taking the kickoff.

The own goal at the start of the second half (our second equaliser) was also hilarious, near post corner defender kicked the ball into the diving keeper's face and in, but there isn't a decent enough camera angle for a replay.

Any ideas on the 'wobbly run'?

I think it might be Flair rating. Ozkan in this video has 19 for flair and almost starts disco dancing before he shoots. He does the stepover run constantly in other situations as well.
