  1. What's the nearest striker role to Target man - Attack (pushes up on the last defender but stays completely central, no drifting wide into channels or dribbling loads) but without the whole target man thing.

The team doesn't go overboard on the long passes with it, but it's still far more wasteful than I'd like playing out from the back, crossing positions etc. when my centre forward is just under 6' tall.

I'm not 100% on this, but maybe DLF-A? He will hold up the ball though. I'm even less sure about this because I haven't used the role much, but maybe even a Poacher, since he won't move around much, but stay high?

  2. When on the ball, a player successfully runs past an opponent without losing possession.

I see. I don't suppose there's a stat for unsuccessful dribbles, or times dispossessed, is there?

Separately, it'd be cool to have stuff like the player radars used to visualize stats in websites like these: http://www.statsbomb.com/2014/04/new-radars-better-rigor-plus-the-average-player/

Almost all the stats are visible already (or can be easily calculated from what's visible), which is why I bring up unsuccessful dribbles.

  3. Tick-box or not, a counter only ever kicks in when certain in match criteria are met:

A counter attack is started when there are less than X opposing players between the ball carrier and the opposing goal. Using counter Mentality means X is a bigger number than with other mentalities, making it more likely that a team tries to catch the opposition on the break when winning back the ball.

Counter attacks can happen in each Mentality, they are just more frequent with a Counter Mentality.

    Thanks, that's very informative!

  4. Reading the Counter Attack 101 thread and an interesting question was raised that hopefully someone can answer...

Using counter attack, is it counter (ahem) productive to select 'More Direct' or 'Route One' as the set up of the Counter Strategy will incorporate that style of play when the counter is on?

If the counter is not on, you team will sit back and probe?

and, if they above two points are true, does that also mean that using shouts like 'Retain Possession' and 'Short Passing' are also not advised as this will also effect how and when your team go for the jugular?

    Thanks

Curious to see the answer but have a related question: When does a "counter" kick on? In previous versions, there was the Counter tick box, but now, does it just happen at your own players' discretion?

  5. Great replies all; I guess I'm trying to figure out the necessary proactive tweaks I can make to my pressing, high-line defensive system that can mitigate against letting strikers slip behind (I know I'm courting that risk by pressing and playing high).

So I guess against 2 strikers (or maybe even 1 striker and an AMC that gets forward), it would be reasonable to play CD(d)-CD(d)? And against lone strikers, it might be more effective to play CD©-CD(s/d)? Or is it even too crude to break it down like that, and one must adjust based off exactly how the opponent plans to supply its striker(s)?

  6. When playing a back 4, do people generally adjust their CB pairing dependent on whether they are facing 1 or 2 strikers? For example, I could see how trying for a stopper-cover relationship might be problematic when facing 2 strikers because the gap between CBs would be more easily exploited, but does the same issue happen if you are up against a AMC-ST partnership?

  7. I would go with a attacking creative role, since that's the one element your AM and DM aren't really providing. Maybe an AP/A if you have anyone suitable. If not then maybe a CM/A.

Hmm that's interesting, haven't considered that. Worried that might make things too attacking, as the SS isn't the most aggressive at tracking back. Do you think I'd run into spacing issues too with the SS, DLF, and AP, potentially interacting in similar spaces?

  8. If I'm trying to set up a 4-2-3-1 with 1 CM and 1 DM, what's an appropriate role for the CM when I'm using a DM-D? I thought about BBM to try to link the defense and attack, but I'm slightly concerned he will be out of position too much with all that space to cover in midfield. Would a CM-S or even a DLP-S be better for staying in position but still linking defense and attack? Upfront I'm playing W-S -- SS-A -- W-A with a DLF-S as my striker.
