I agree, but it also feels worse than it is (and it's bad. That stupid thing where a team takes a short corner and the receiver passes straight back to the corner taker who's now called offside? I've never seen that in a football match, ever. Set up a corner routine with short corners and it'll happen a couple times a game.) because offsides are over-represented in highlights. All offsides calls, no matter how mundane or boring, are part of the highlights package in Extended+ highlights. So what you end up with is something where you're watching a package that includes limited buildup, nothing that doesn't end in a shot, and all of the possible offsides. It's pretty rough.
This has been an issue for years and years now. It makes comprehensive highlights unwatchable - you need to choose either full match or extended unfortunately. I doubt at this point it will ever get fixed.

Had SI banned Russia for 5-10 years I don't think we'd be seeing anywhere near the same number of complaints.
I think SI have taken a politically-charged stance by banning them forever. It's not an attempt to reflect the current reality, it's gone much further and is into the realms of making a statement about being against war, as if it's a niche stance.

I know the ME team has moved on to FM23, but for the sake of venting a bit, here are my grievances with the ME as it currently:
- Shooting is chaotic. I checked the bugs forum and only saw one or two posts bring this up. According to the bug team, there hadn't been many complaints about this at all, which I find staggering. Most matches end up with a low number of shots on target. Lower than the real life average, in some cases. My players seem obsessed with leathering the ball as hard as possible, resulting in shots going into orbit more often than finding the top corner. Lowering tempo doesn't help. On the other hand, good chances are often squandered by weak shooting. This is irrespective of the quality of attacker. There are plenty of goals in the game, but the balance feels completely off. Difficult chances seem to have just as much chance going in than the so-called easy ones. Winning games off set-pieces and long shots while missing the open play chances doesn't feel fulfilling.
- This can also be punishing thanks to a bizarre habit centre backs have formed during goal kicks. The opposition keeper kicking long and high is a nightmare for any defender in this game, apparently. They often lost flight of the ball, step out in front of the striker and miss it completely. Then the striker sometimes scores, or plays in one of his mates for an easy goal. Again, this is regardless of the quality of defender in your team. You can very easily lose a game to this and it feels very unfair.
FINALLY someone else points out the major issues that I've had with FM22!
The centre backs losing the ball from goal kicks is absurd - either every goalkeeper in the lower divisions in Eastern Europe is the next Ederson, or the ME is broken from goal kicks. It was like this in FM21 too, but thankfully the rest of the ME was good enough to just about make up for it. Weirdly it doesnt actually result in many goals because the strikers, despite being through on goal, don't finish off the easy chances like that. Like you've pointed out, scoring from set pieces seems to be the more likely thing to happen.
I kept trying to get back into my save, but I've given up now, for me FM22 just isn't fun to play.
On a side note personally I'm not sure it's really acceptable for SI to release the game, do ONE major patch after four months, then leave everything as it is until next year. The Club World Cup has been broken for years, nobody seems to care. EA and Ubisoft rightfully get criticised from all sides about their distain for their customers, but are we really getting any better here? Yes, SI are a smaller company, but how many people does it take to fix the Club World Cup stamina issue, or the niggly UI issues that have been present for multiple games now...?

Just conceded 5 goals in the first 20 minutes of the new update on my old save (3 from corners). Got to love it
The one thing I was needing this patch to fix more than anything was the set pieces... If there are still loads of goals from corners and indirect free kicks I'll have to abandon FM22 for good...

I'm sorry, but there seem to be some serious flaws with your research.
For starters, why are you counting 'route-one' goals that didn't specifically come from a set-piece as coming from a set-piece situation? If your striker scored from a counter-attacking long ball, would that not be from open play? Or does it not count because it isn't a typical 'pretty' open-play goal?
And when do you count a goal as coming from a set-piece? If the goal is scored or assisted directly from the set-piece? If it's scored within 5 seconds of the set piece? Within 10 seconds? Within 30 seconds? Or you just counting any goal where the highlight started with a dead ball, even if the goal wasn't scored until much later?
Nope, I'm only counting goals that come close to immediately from a set piece. If there's any semblance of play at all between the dead ball and the goal I'll chalk it up as open play.
I should specify - Route One is from the goalkeeper, not from a defender or midfielder doing a long pass. This has been raised as a bug though and SI are looking into it - defenders seem incapable of defending long balls over the top that they should easily be able to head clear, but somehow don't. I don't think it's realistic that every goalkeeper turns into Ederson when they have the ball at their feet and is able to ping a 70-yard pass into a striker's path.
Throw ins are counted only when they're a short throw that's crossed in straightaway. This is a type of goal that's rarely seen in real life, but this ME loves them. Short throw, pass back to throw taker, cross into box, headed chance.
Marking from set pieces was a big issue in FM20 and it's an issue again in FM22. Too many headers are won by strikers, even against 6'7" defenders.
At times it feels like the game is beautiful once it gets into "normal" patterns of play - with both teams set out as expected, the game knows where to drag players and where they go to cover any spaces etc. But outside of that, i.e. in set piece situations, it's unsure of what to do and this results in way too many chances coming straight from corners or free kicks in seemingly-harmless locations.

I started keeping a note of how each goal was scored (for or against me):
Open Play Goals: 31
Indirect Free Kicks: 10
Penalties: 10
Direct Free Kicks: 1
Throw Ins: 4
Route One: 2
Totalling 31 goals from open play, 27 goals from set piece situations
But it's also the general feeling of the games that really needs vast improvement. The highlight reels consist so heavily of free kicks headed over, corners headed over, direct free kicks against the posts. I get that set pieces are a part of the game, but they're not the only part of the game! I can spend ages fine tuning my formation so that in general play we look solid all game, but we concede so often from free kicks 40 yards out it's almost like none of the normal play really matters...

I find that if I'm retraining someone into a new position I'd really like for them to play friendlies and reserve matches in that new position, but naturally whoever picks the reserve teams plays them in their natural position instead.
Adding a quick option into the reserve selection criteria could easy solve this - "play players in positions they are learning in training"

Will you be buying FM23 ?

I'm in the same camp as others on here - there are so many niggly bugs and QOL issues in FM22 that I'm really just hoping that FM23 tidies all that up and vastly improves the ME.
Player interactions is also in dire need of a complete overhaul, but again I doubt if SI will ever get round to fixing this.
I'm hoping for no new "features" (which in reality are usually extra screens that add little to the game and most players end up ignoring anyway). But this seems to be something SI are quite fond of, so I fully expect to see a random new highly-touted "feature" advertised for FM23 that takes up way too much development time and leads to even more bugs, and the continued issues with the Club World Cup still being present.
