What's your rationale on using relatively aggressive IWB role on left flank behind SV and Inside Forward? Not only are you needlessly narrow with not a single player providing width but also no real covering players as all three will be driving into space. That whole flank is ripe for opposition counters. Especially when they catch you while you pressing them high. No wonder that smaller sides are finishing clinically against you. You are kind of asking for it. Even in FM22 this tactic would have been risky. So nothing really changed. You still need to build well balanced tactics to be consistently successful.

Initially I wanted him to fill the gap left when the SV ventures forward. But, now you've pointed this out I can see why it's been ineffective with the IWBs.

Also your high pressing and defending instructions are extremely intensive and demanding for your players. I'm not sure whether that suits a team like Antwerp. And in 1st season too. I would even question whether playing like this would be a good idea for a team like Liverpool. Certainly not for 90 minutes. One of the big changes in FM23 (and I believe it was already partially implemented in FM22) is in how much aggressive defending like this drains the players stamina and fitness levels. Unlike before you really need to keep an eye on those, because players will not perform at their top if you tire them out by having them run around like headless bloody chickens. Also keep an eye on intensity bar in top right corner. And try to keep it out of the red.

Fair point. Thanks for pointing out player fatigue during a game has become more pronounced, I was struggling to pin point where the ME had been altered a bit. Makes loads of sense, advice appreciated.

I struggle a bit too with the 4231 DM, it feels like all my attacking players are stationary, even on support duty they never help in the build up and my team is cut in half. I don't know if this is your case but I think this is a known issue.

Otherwise your tactic seems decent, but I would change either the shadow striker into an attacking midfielder on attack duty or the inside forward into an inverted winger on attack, in order not to have too many player fully focused on scoring goals. You could also change the inside forward on support into an inverted winger on support.

Regarding your left flank, it's true that you could suffer from a lack of width, so what I think you could do is :

    - change your VOLsu into a DMsu and your left back into a WBsu

    - or ask your AML to stay wider to reduce the problem

    - or change only your left back into a WBsu but you could be a little exposed to counter attacks on this side

I'm usually a 4-3-3 man, but fancied trying something a little different. Agreed the left-flank is an issue, these are all great suggestions! I'm fascinated with the SV role, but so far struggling to get a lot out of it. So a switch is probably inevitable.

Also, with two CDMs your IWB won’t act like an IWB normally would. I would change him to a standard FBs and tell him to play narrow and hold position.

Didn't even consider this, thanks for pointing out!

I don't usually struggle like this, so advice will be taken on-board. I resorted to using a 'pre-made' tactic in a dummy game I have going as Napoli, which bore way more fruit than creating my own. I think I'll use the beta in this way too, before trying my own tactics again once the full-version/I've worked the game out a bit more!

    :)

  2. I am really struggling with FM23.

    Mainly;

    - Weaker opposition dominating and finishing clinically on most occasions (I struggled to beat Sligo Rovers 1-0).

    - Midfielders unable to complete simple passes or easily losing ball under pressure.

    - Defenders making errors every other game.

I've no idea what has changed from FM22 to FM23. Not here to say the game is rigged or any of that crap. But, there is something fundamentally different about this match engine and it has not been communicated by the producers. Anyone care to enlighten me?

    Current tactic attached.

    Basic principles are:

    - Pressing high up with a top heavy set-up. Positive mentality as we're one of the stronger teams in the division.

    - Play out of defence to avoid hoof-ball, but with some directness further on in build up.

    - SS, IFa, FBa to provide overlaps and movement. DLPd to be the one spreading ball directly to them, or DLFs to come deep and play it short to them.

    - SVs to drive team forward. IWBs to cover the gap he leaves when further forward.

  3. As a chronic new game starter, here are my two cents:

Bologna - A fair few good youngsters to develop (Svanberg, Dominguez, Olsen, Corbo, Barrow, Jurawa, Binks, Tomiyashu). A little bit of money to spend.

Real Sporting Gijon - In Spanish Segunda Liga, a good crop of Spanish youngsters in the first team and development squad. 30,000 seater stadium.

NEC Nijmengen - Dutch Ereste Division, again an absolute army of good young players you can comfortably play straight away. Unusual kits & colours too if that is your thing.

Have you ever been able to sign any youngsters from PSV or Ajax or is it always impossible?

I got Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax for 2m! He has huge potential and has the 'wonderkid' description for me. They had transfer listed him, I think he was running his contract down.

I've been looking around a variety of different nations and found the likes of Club Brugge, Genk, Gent, Standard Liege interesting. There are a variety of Austrian clubs from the obvious and Austria Wien to WSG Tirol or even Wacker Innsbruck in the second tier. A little lower throws up names like Panathinaikos, Ejsberg, Hammarby IF (but not because of Zlatan investment) and I've even considered HJK in Finland after checking some out of date foreign player loopholes there that appeal to me on a personal level. In Holland, AZ or SC Heerenveen have young but interesting squads and even Rangers can be made in to something much better with Morelos in the team. There are a whole bunch of good teams in the second Spanish league you could take on, plenty in England too. Just a few thoughts...

Really enjoying my save with AZ. You have plently of great youngsters, good finances and some fair challenges in trying to break the triopoly of the Eredivisie. I traditionally find it very difficult to stick to a save, I'm 4 and a half seasons in with AZ and having tons of fun though!

I don't, mainly because I got some ridiculous offers. I'll give you the lowdown:

Gullit, Peer Koopmeiners and Ooisjing were never good enough on my save. They've all gone on to be regular starters for mid level Eredivisie teams though.

Teun Koomeiners was my favourite. My captain and the rock I built my first 2 title winning seasons around. However, in the 4th season Internazionale came along with £36.5m which the board accepted over my head and off he went.  He's now playing for West Ham.

Kenzo Goudmijn probably has had the most success out of all of the golden generation. He won 4 League Titles with me  before Real Madrid paid £55m for him.

Owen Wijndal left me quite early before I was a strong enough club to keep him. After our 2nd title winning season, he moved to Arsenal for £36m and he's still their left back now.

Myron Boadu was another that left in Season 4 after 2 titles. He insisted on a minimum release fee of £52m and Inter paid it. He's now at Chelsea after they spent £78m on him.

Peer Koopmeiners must have random PA, he is 4.5 stars rated for potential in my 3rd season.

Must have been hard to lose Teun! He is rock solid, I've moved him to BPD and he's done great.

I'm playing as AZ Alkmaar and focusing around youth, so 4 seasons in and 90% of my team are regens. It's hard to pick a favourite, I've rounded it down to 4

It's possibly Biberoglu from my first youth intake, who I retrained into a central midfielder and now he's been capped by the Dutch national team

Possibly De Jonge, who came from my 2nd youth intake and who's potential sky-rocketed once I gave him a few games. He's now my vice captain:

Miladinovic was the first wonderkid (not already at AZ) that I attracted to the club. I signed him from Napredak in Serbia, paying £1m for a 16 year old, but I had to wait until he was 18 to join me. He's now my main holding midfielder and playing for his country:

Finally, Svilar. This guy is my best. He cost me £3m from Partizan Belgrade, but scored 10 goals from the wing in his debut season. He's already rated as my best player:

    Wow, some great talent here!

I'm into my 2nd second with AZ and enjoying it. I was wondering if you had any of the original 'real' AZ Alkmaar young-guns still about? Like Tuen and Peer Koopmeiners, Goudmijn, Oositing, Wijnald, Gullit etc?

Sometimes the best to do is take time off, few weeks or month take FM out of your life. Dont come to forums or play it. It can have bad affect in motivation and in long term play if u start hopping from save to save, time passes but you are still picking...

    I was thinking this!

I have a very busy few days ahead so it seems the ideal time to have a few days away from the game (After playing pretty much every evening since release!) and come back to it during the few days I have off next week for Christmas.

Lol I have this too. But i just started though. It defo doesnt fell like the old fm's for me. But need to make it work somehow cuz the base of the game is still great. Before i had no problems with playing the game matches and get things work but now its hard.
I can play the better side but just loose easy. Makes things frustrating. So went into info about the tactics etc. but im quite over it now and just use a working tactic and play the game. Just started also with Az Alkmaar. I like also realism in the game, but its hard to have that all the time in any aspect of the game. So need to turn down some expectations and just hope to get good results and play the game.

What is your frustating thing in the game? Do you use own made tactic or?

Not really to do with tactics or ME, I'm pretty happy with both.

It can be stupid things such as not being Newcastle United, because I support them and if I do well that is unrealistic

I'm just going to try and stick out a game with Venezia for now I think. I'm a few games deep as of yesterday evening. I like their kit, logo, colours and their squad isn't bad.
