There are no wide forward options available when playing fluid, in the flanks map...

Thank you. Firstly, how do you decide what shape and mentality to use when developing a style of play. What are your main reasons behind choosing each one?

How do I view the maps on my iPhone? I click the link and it takes me to a blank screen.

Ozil I find this thread absolutely outstanding!! So much do that I have decided to buy FM18 - having previously stubbornly sticking to FM11.
I was way nesting if you might be able to help me replicate some real life tactics, in the style that you do with yours? You seem to bring a simplicity and clarity to the game that just doesn’t come naturally to me yet.
I need a tutor.

I’m playing on FM11 and have 3 simple systems, using generic roles, which fit different player types. The players that are used determine the teams style of play, to some extent.
All systems are built using Balanced/Standard philosophy and mentality.
Here are the systems:
4-2-3-1:-
GK D
WB S
CD D
CD D
WB D
CM D
CM S
IF OR W S
AM S
IF A
AF A
4-3-3:-
GK D
WB S
CD D
CD D
WB S
DM D
CM S
CM S
IF A
IF A
DLF S
4-3-1-2:-
GK D
WB S
CD D
CD D
WB S
CM S
CM D
CM S
AM S
AF A
DLF S
All 3 work very well, but I am having trouble in building a 4-4-2 in a similar way, that is as successful as the others. Any ideas or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

So it looks like you would place them dependant on what space is being left and exploited by your wide players?

In a 4-4-2 formation would you place your most advanced central midfielder behind your most advanced centre forward and defensive centre midfielder behind your support striker, or visa versa?

Herne, would you be interested in elaborating on how to create sensible role allocations in different formations?

I think this thread needs to lead on to another about creating simple, logical tactics.

There have been a lot of things added to the game over the years that are just for show. There to be ignored.

For instance, I was thinking of moving the b2b midfielder up as an AM(s) and the anchor man up into the midfield as a CM(d). This will make me slightly higher with less protection in front of the defence. Is it best I keep a DM or even two?

Do you think I need to have at least one player in the DM strata and/or stick to have one player on attack duty?

I have been using the system in Cleon's original post to great affect, on FM2011. It has worked well using the right players for a host of teams from different leagues at different levels.
I was was wondering if anyone thinks such a system could work with an AMC behind a single striker or even two strikers up front?

How would you deal with narrow systems such as 4-1-2-1-2, 4-3-1-2, 4-3-2-1 etc.?

I'm currently using this with Liverpool on FM11 and it works an absolute treat, even with players that aren't perfectly suited.

Who do you sacrifice when going down to ten men?

I play with a 4-1-2-2-1/4-3-3. I'm never sure what changes to make when I get a player sent off. What formation to change to.
Any suggestions?

Cleon, out of curiosity, what other formations do you think would be well suited to possession football?
For instance, in your counter attack thread you've said that 4-1-4-1, 4-5-1 and variations of 3-5-2 are well suited to counter attacking football.

I'd love to see more threads like this one. One for each mentality perhaps?

Are you planning on any real life examples as you did during the World Cup?

Please sir. Can I have some more?

If you were playing with a winger(or two) instead of an inside forward, would you make any changes to any of the other roles?
Also, if you didn’t have a player suited to playing the DLP(D) role, what other midfield set ups would you consider?
