We ran out of steam a little towards the end. Two late goals helped us beat Lugano before a fighting draw in Bern where Young Boys most definitely had the upper hand and then lost to Luzern in a straight fight for 3rd place on the last day. This meant we went into the cup final knowing the result would be the difference between a Europa League playoff spot or the 2nd qualifying round of the Conference League.

A superb win in Zurich gave us our first trophy since I took over.

League table

9kLUDdP.jpg

We finish 4th with Luzern pulling away a little with those last two games. We were the best in the league in the last 3 months, which is very pleasing  progress indeed. Basel held off Young Boys to win their first title since 2017. Grasshopper had a shocking season and Switzerland's most successful club is back in the 2nd tier again.

Transfers (part 1) | Transfers (part 2) | (Some more) Transfers out

We ended up making more of an overhaul than I initially planned. Young Boys came in for Rohner and I thought he was replaceable enough but unfortunately, they soon came in for Kutesa too, which was more annoying. Similarly, Lens turned Jeremy Frick's head and he's leaving after making close to 350 appearances for the club. Kutesa after some price negotiations is off to Mallorca for €6m, rising to €7m, while Frick will join Rosenborg for €6.75m in August. Both good players but we are getting decent fees for them, especially for Frick who is 33.

Isak Alberg comes in to strengthen our defence with Novak Tepsic's loan not being renewed, breaking our transfer record in the process. Altimira had a mandatory buy-out clause while Martin Turk joins from Parma for €2.3m to replace Frick. Caliagra is a nice option in midfield while we brought in two ex-Man City youngsters in Bobb and Delap as Kutesa wished to leave. Delap's signing came after we missed out on Giuliano Simeone, who chose Bochum instead.

Preseason fixtures get split in two as it resumes well before the league reset date apparently. We only played some local teams to build up match fitness.

Season preview

N4L35M0.jpg

nFpD95O.jpg

The board and the media expect us to finish 3rd and I think on paper, that is about right. We were, however, the best team in the league from March onwards and if we can take that form into the new season, we might even upset the apple cart a little. I would like to give us a good go at challenging again for the Swiss Cup and hopefully, we can get into the Europa groups and eventually reach the knockout round again.

July & August

Transfers

RbKQToM.jpg

No more major transfers out. Bursik joins as 2nd-choice keeper after a few players kicked off about not having any depth in that position. He's pretty good for a backup too so I will look to give him a few games here and there.

Fixtures

g08vATz.jpg

We started like a house on fire, destroying Thun and Zurich before easing past the title favourites in Young Boys. After going 2 up at Basel though, we couldn't keep it up though as they came from behind and in the end, we were perhaps a tad fortunate to get a point there. A nice win over Vaduz was followed by a more even game at Winterthur, where we were clinical. Unfortunately, we ended August by losing again to our regional rivals in Lausanne, with their keeper being the Player of the Match.

0OYCiLk.jpg

A rotated team eased through in the cup.

9lcKIZd.jpg

We got the toughest draw on paper in the Europa League playoffs. However, we absolutely dominated them at home and should probably have scored more than 2. Away from home, we looked on course for a total FM-ing as Besiktas went 3-0 up by the 48th minute. Delap levelled the tie and Bobb put us in front. Cognat's late strike was a massive relief as we drew on the night to make it through to the league stage.

PLKFmmW.jpg

That's a tough draw on paper. 5 teams from the top 5 leagues with Braga and Club Brugge also being solid sides.

League table

l8ej7aO.jpg

With YB starting slowly, it has been between us and Basel so far. Lausanne have also hit some form after the derby win over us.

Improved to excellent now. Unfortunately, the training facilities are average and the board refuses to upgrade them despite having well over €20m in the bank.

Took a fair amount of arguing but they eventually agreed with me.

Fixtures

d87OFtJ.jpg

Not the most convincing month in the league. St. Gallen have had a poor start and we took a while to get the winner before succumbing to a poor display of shooting at Luzern. Our final game of the month brought a welcome change as we blew Lugano away yet again. We have had some bad luck with injuries which has stopped me from being able to rotate better which might be a reason for the unconvincing displays. Guillemenot and Ltaief both missed 4 weeks each, Severin and Altimira are out for 3 months each while there's been a few smaller injuries causing players to miss a week or two.

hmc4jdh.jpg

The cup game wasn't particularly convincing either as a rotated side found themselves behind at half-time. We did keep creating chances though and the pressure ultimately told.

eO7OUtL.jpg

It's like we have a completely different side playing in Europe! Qarabag were arguably the easiest team that we had drawn and we swept them away before turning on the style in Geneva as we stunned Koln.

League table

fCXJO1a.jpg

Luzern are on a tear and have gone top while Young Boys seem to be moving up the gears too. There's a 3 week break for internationals so it will be interesting to see how things develop after that.

tqxmOBN.jpg

The brilliant start has put us up in 2nd already. Our next game here is against Spurs, who put 8 past CFR Cluj in their second game.

Smooth sailing in the league until we met Young Boys. We really deserved 3 points there but instead, ended up requiring a late equaliser from Bobb.

XmfdH7r.jpg

The previous cup rounds had some shaky moments, this one was anything but. Into the Quarters we go!

apzG8g7.jpg

We did well to restrict Spurs to just one and then got one for ourselves through David Douline's head.

November & December 2026

Fixtures

6R3cWUr.jpg

November saw us hit the skids somewhat performance wise. Basel matched us all the way in a ding-dong battle and could very well have won it before Vaduz ruthlessly punished us. A more confident performance saw us beat Winterthur and smash Lausanne in the Leman derby. The first half of the season was rounded off by sweeping aside St. Gallen before beating Luzern for the first time under my reign.

9oKod45.jpg

In between the Basel and Vaduz games, we produced what might be the worst performance of my time at Servette. We scored with our first two shots but Braga came from behind and created an xG of 4.49 to our 0.83. It's a miracle that we didn't take a battering. A superb display in the Black Country saw us sweep away Wolves while Hoffenheim proved too strong for us.

League table

0TJRHwM.jpg

The game against Luzern was very much a six pointer and the win puts us 6 clear at the top heading into the winter break.

X2zzvEU.jpg

We've slipped out of the automatic qualification spots but are crucially still in the top 16, which would have us seeded for the Knockout Round draw. Club Brugge (H) and Villarreal (A) await us in January.

No major transfers either so far. St. Gallen came in for Magnin and I was happy to let him go, with Esteves replacing him to rotate at RB with Loun Srdanovic. Mesonero was about 5th choice at CB and I wasn't going to turn down Sion's advances. If he hits all those appearance related objectives, we will recoup the entire fee the club previously paid for him.

Fixtures

401R6G6.jpg

We resumed in style, winning 3/3 and conceding none. Lugano frustrated us for a while before we got a penalty while the other two were smooth sailing.

TVfuHDj.jpg

We've only gone and done it. Club Brugge were much worse than I expected before we completed a superb smash-and-grab in Spain. Villarreal have had a tycoon takeover and spent a fair amount of cash too, which makes it all the more surprising and impressive.

b71qNlN.jpg

No goals conceded in January in any competition.

League table

6iUlIa6.jpg

A defeat for Luzern in the last round of the month sends us 9 clear at the top.

February 2027

Fixtures

6LE3uxR.jpg

Not the most convincing month but we get 9 points out of 12 nevertheless. Young Boys handed us our first home defeat since May but worse than that, Liam Delap broke his ankle and is likely out for the season. Timothe Cognat then picked up a hip injury a couple of days later and will be out for a while too. We did manage to beat Basel despite not playing well while Vaduz also gave us a hard time. We came from behind twice before winning it through an OG.

pm7M0h7.jpg

Easy enough game in the cup as we beat local side Nyon.

League table

Our lead drops by 1 point. The Europa League knockout round took place and we are up against Sevilla in the Round of 16 in March.

Fixtures

OxlOYMi.jpg

The tetchy run in February continued into March as we slid to defeat at Winterthur. However, we turned it around with a thumping Leman derby win before following it up by smashing St. Gallen.

gE0tiVX.jpg

No issues in Europe though as we stunned Sevilla at their place before two early goals saw us ease to the quarters. Koln are up next.

League table

fyT5VBB.jpg

Luzern edge a point closer. Our injuries are piling up in crucial positions though which is concerning.

Youth candidates

zGP9QmG.jpg

Fynn Czerwinski | Fabio Sousa | Andrea Fabiano

Quite a pleasing intake in the end. Czerwinski looks like he has the potential to go far while Fabiano and Sousa are pretty decent too. Also nice to get a big prospect from a unique nation.

Fixtures

ts1I4Je.jpg

We're very much trying to stumble over the line now. Luzern's two first half goals consigned us to defeat and although we played well against Sion, Lugano were a good match for us.

P4DDKdN.jpg

The cup game against Lugano went much better though, as we absolutely demolished them.

Kttw1Ry.jpg

Koln were a step too far for our depleted side. We beat them easily earlier in the season but were lucky to get a draw at home and then nearly FM'd them at their place before they scored a couple of late goals.

Luzern are closing in. We do have a game in hand though and also play Luzern themselves in the final game of the season.

So, here's how it went down:

Luzern 0-0 Zurich
Servette 3-0 Winterthur

Servette 0-1 Young Boys (game in hand)

Winterthur 2-1 Luzern
Servette 0-2 Basel

76 points to 73. Then we went to Zurich and won, a game where we could easily have lost as well but we came through, with 17 yr old Rafael Saenz scoring his first goal for the club. This put us 6 clear of Luzern with a healthy GD advantage and a day later, they lost 4-2 at home to YB, therefore mathematically confirming our title!

The final game saw a somewhat rotated team draw at home to Luzern, despite leading twice.

A week after the league season concluded, we were back in action in the Swiss Cup final. With the likes of Timothe Cognat and Fabrizio Caligara returning from injury, we saved our best performance for the last, turning on the style to demolish Young Boys. It did take a while as they scored an equaliser against the run of play, only for substitute Antunes to kill off our opponents.

I guess this award is an end of the season one instead of a end of the year thing?

Preseason

duJ5KYx.jpg

Transfers (Part 1) | Transfers (Part 2)

Like last season, we got some excellent deals on free transfers again. Iago comes in to compete with Mazikou at left back, Evjen came in to strengthen our midfield while Archer was initially signed to replace Bedia in the starting XI. Then Brentford triggered Delap's release clause, giving us €9.5m in pure profit for a player who looked decent but didn't exactly set things on fire before missing the season run in anyway.

18 year old Czech U21 international Novotny comes in to replace him for a club record fee, almost doubling our previous record. He also has a €12.5m release clause for the next two years so I doubt we will keep him around for long but boy, does he look good. Jancic has gone straight into our U21 side for the moment but with interest in Payen from other Swiss clubs, he might well be getting promoted soon. Normally, I would like keeping homegrown players but he's unambitious and has pretty low determination, resulting in him not exactly improving much.

Transfers

7oUWXdP.jpg

I didn't have any plans to conduct more transfer business until Basel offered us big money for Antunes. Good squad player who played a fair amount but I couldn't turn that much down. Payen eventually left for Schalke while Severin left around the time our window closed. He was 3rd/4th choice at CB anyway and wanted to play more. Letting him go also means we can open up another non-Swiss spot in our squad for the future.

Fixtures

01FFzqn.jpg

Near perfect start in the league. A couple of late goals saw us ease past Lausanne before Vaduz held us to a draw in a chaotic game. We followed it up with a perfect August as Archer and Novotny got their first league hattricks.

TrOGnub.jpg

Novotny also scored a treble in the cup right before that as we flew past Langenthal.

League table

Klhmz8t.jpg

Early days but we have started brilliantly. Young Boys are the only ones with a perfect record though.

CU4PAoM.jpg

CL fixtures are out and it was always going to be tough. AEK and Bodo/Glimt are obviously going to be our best targets to get some points on board and then we need to do whatever we can to get something from our other home games if we are to progress further.

...and then rejected the job offer. I did manage to get another training upgrade out of the board though!

In most cases, Lyon would be an excellent offer, especially with the chance to bring through world class talents. However, they were never part of the Holy Roman Empire, nor ruled by a Habsburg king.
