Creating a player that becomes a manager

I'm looking for advice on putting myself into the game as a player that goes on to become a manager.

I usually do it in the long term game I play in each FM I get and it's moderately entertaining watching my own career. Except in 09 I just disappear from the database around 6 months after my contract ends at whatever club I'm playing for.

I put myself in the database with my real date of birth, so I'm 38 at the start of 09, I'm an old striker with 20 in my "wants to become a manager" stat, 5 in the asst manager stat and ambition of 14.

Is it just luck of the draw that I didn't become manager? Any tips on what I might be doing wrong?
