Major headlines:

New Villa boss splashes the cash out this summer, both bringing in a new team and new backroom staff. Many things are expected of Daniel Carvalho, and Cesar Delgado. Both from South America, young but many fans will be keen to see how they adapt to the premiership. Other big names moving to Villa Park include Leo Franco, Ujfalusi, and the Juventus duo Camoranesi and Zebina. Question marks have however been risen with some of the outward dealings from the fans, especially with Gareth Barry being sold to rivals West Brom.

Board Expectations:

Board: The team is expected to stay clear of relegation.

Fans: The supporters expect to achieve a mid-safe table position.

G.M: “The Premiership is the hardest league in the world, but with some of the players I’ve brought into the club we have the potential to push for a top 6 European spotâ€.

Premier Division (Round 1 vs Liverpool –a) / 13.08.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Samuel, Mellberg, Ridgewell, McCann, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

First game of the season, but things didn’t start well for Villa, with Delgado immediately injured after 2 minutes of play. Gonzalez gave Pool the lead with a 25 yard lob over Sorenson on the half hour mark. Pool seemed to now have the game under control, but a lapse in concentration gave Baros the chance to equalise which he did. 1-1 at half time with the game now evenly poised.

The game really opened up in the second half, with chances being created at both ends. But with Pool going after the winner a clinical Villa counter attack gave Carvalho an opportunity one on one with the goalkeeper and he held his nerve cooly slotting his shot into the corner.

A great start for the Villa winning away at Anfield 2-1. But bad news as Cesar Delgado is now out with a serious injury on his debut for 4 months.

Premier Division (Round 2 vs Sheff Utd–h) / 20.08.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellinil, Mellberg, Ridgewell, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Quite a different side, with a few new names making their debuts. Chiellini, Maldonado. Unfortunately Farfan couldn’t make his being unfit. If last game was anything to go by, Villa should take this one home making it 2 wins from 2.

The first half was all Villa. Patiently building up attacks, but lacked a cutting edge till the 41st minute after a Goalkeeper parry left Baros with the simplest of tap ins. Score at half-time is 1-0.

A sending off for Unsworth immediately after half-time made things harder for Sheffield. Baros converted a penalty minutes later doubling the lead. This was how it stayed giving Villa that 2nd win on the trot.

Premier Division (Round 3 vs Charlton–a) / 24.08.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Farfan’s long awaited debut is finally here. He replaced Berger on the left wing for this clash. Ujfalusi Villa’s latest signing also comes in immediately to take place of Ridgewell who has been solid so far this year.

An awful start for Villa with Charlton taking the lead in the first minute. The attacking 3-4-3 clearly caught us off guard. But after 25 minutes Camaronesi scored from Farfan’s cross making it one a piece. But within 5 minutes Charlton score a belter from Warnock regaining the lead. Villa clearly engraged then immediately responded making it 2-2. Then from a set piece not cleared from Charlton Angel edges Villa in front again just seconds after equalising. It could have been 4-2 but Baros then had a goal ruled out for offside just before half time. A cracking game thus far with Villa having a slim 1 goal advantage.

Constant Charlton pressure in the 2nd half finally paid off with Tristan scoring from a free-kick making it 3-3. And then a penalty miss for Villa by Baros has kept the scores tied. The game intensity as expected died down towards the end, and the game fizzled out after a frantic game for 75 minutes. Game finished a 3-3 draw, but cause for concern for Villa with the defensive frailties shown here at The Valley.

Premier Division (Round 4 vs Middlesborough–h) / 27.08.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Angel, Baros/

One change from the last game, Berger comes in for the again injured Farfan for this home tie vs Middlesborough. Ujfalusi remains picked, despite his poor performance last game.

Villa started the game very well, in full control creating the chances. A Daniel Carvalho free kick hit the top corner giving them the lead after 20 minutes. It stayed like this till half time. A much quieter game than the one before against Charlton so far.

A fantastic counter attack at the start of the 2nd half led to Carvalho’s 2nd goal. He started the move with a fantastic long pass and finished it off coolly after getting into the opposition box. But straight after, Rochemback scored for Borough making it a tight game again with 40 minutes to go. Borough are now pressing for the equaliser, but Carvalho’s range of passing and finishing has caused them problems all day. Another counter attack led to Carvalho bagging a hatrick, scoring a 25 yard belter securing the 3 points for the Villa.

Premier Division (Round 5 vs Portsmouth–a) / 10.09.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Agathe, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

After the internationals, the Villa squad has again been crippled. New signing Maldonado performing very well at DMC is out for 4 months like Delgado. Camoranesi is also out for 4 weeks so G.M expects the slide to start from here. On a brighter note deadline day signing Leo Franco takes Sorenson’s place in goal.

Pompey have really taken it to Villa from the start, really should have been 3 goals up but around the 40th minute but a scrappy break led to Villa taking the lead through Angel. And soon after Baros scored a 2nd leaving those at Fratton Park wondering what’s going on.

Franco as in the first half is immense in goal, and a typical injury to a new player on the hour makes things even harder for the Villa with Ujfalusi having to come off. Straight after the change Pompey score through Mendes, with Villa looking uncomfortable. But Villa have regained their composure late on and closed the game out very well, securing a late winner through Agathe on a well worked counter attack delivered from Farfan. Yet another win for the Villa but the injuries are definitely mounting now. Ujfalusi is out for 4 weeks.

Premier Division (Round 6 vs Newcastle–h) / 18.09.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Bouma, McCann, Agathe, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Bouma comes in for the injured Ujfalusi but the side remains the same that scored a somewhat fortunate win over Portsmouth last game.

An early goal for Villa well put away by Angel with a one-on-one situation gives them the lead. This is doubled after a good cross from the right by Agathe again to Angel who heads it passed the goalie. Villa are now on fire playing some great football, with Carvalho grabbing a 3rd on the 35 minute and it ends 3-0 at half time.

Villa are carrying on in the same style, with Carvalho looking creative and bossing the middle of the park. But its Newcastle who score next, with a good cross from the left put in by Ameobi putting some respectability on the scoreline. But yet more problems for Villa, in the 86th minute Franco is now carried off injured. It’s quite remarkable. The game ended in a 3-1 Villa win. But Franco, now confirmed is out for 4 weeks.

Carling Cup (Round 2 vs Bristol Rovers–a) / 21.09.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Bouma, McCann, Agathe, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

A break from league action, giving some time for the Villa injury crisis to pass. This should be a win for the Villa but all away ties can be tricky.

An early goal has given the lead to Villa and soon doubled. Both scored from the 2 front men. However before half-time, yet again Farfan has to come off with an injury and it must be leaving G.M wondering wot da hell is going on.

Villa are coasting this tie, with a late goal from Bouma and then one soon after again from Baros doubled the lead from the first half leaving the final score 4-0. Yet more bad news as the injury confirms Farfan out for 2 months. Leaving Villa with 7 injuries, 6 being all new players purchased.

Premier Division (Round 7 vs Bolton–a) / 24.09.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Bouma, McCann, Agathe, Berger, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

So a weak side out for a very hard clash against the Bolton. With Arsenal and Chelsea to come next in the middle of this crisis its important the Villa can get something out this game to help with board expectations of avoiding relegation.

Bolton started this game very well not giving Villa a look in at all. But only a few chances have been created despite their dominance and the game ended quite dull at 0-0 at half-time.

Bolton take the lead on the hour with a simple goal from Diouf. Villa are really struggling without over half their first team and never troubled Bolton. Score finished 1-0 Bolton.

Premier Division (Round 8 vs Arsenal–h) / 01.10.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Bouma, McCann, Agathe, Berger, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

The crisis remains at Villa Park, with the same side who lost to Bolton having to play this one. Its unlikely Villa will get anything from this tie with the Arsenal.

As expected Arsenal are bossing the game and take the lead through a Van Persie lob in the 20th minute. It stays like this till half-time, with Villa not threatening at all.

Nothing to shout about in the 2nd half at all, no real clear cut chances and Arsenal remained in control for the remainder of the half, giving them a comfortable 1-0 win.

Premier Division (Round 9 vs Chelsea–a) / 15.10.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

A few players have returned, with Ujfalusi Camoranesi and Farfan taking their spots. But a huge task away to Chelsea, it will take a huge effort and a bit of luck to take anything from this game.

More typical unfortune has hit Villa. With Angel taking a knock and be being subbed by Park Young, 2 minutes later… Park Young gets injured and has to come off. So Liguera is now forced to play up front alongside Baros. But this perhaps has unsettled Chelsea, as you can never underestimate a lesser side and soon after the double blow, Baros gives Villa the lead at Stamford Bridge slotting it past Cech. Its 1-0 to the claret n blue at half time.

Chelsea have come out all guns blazing putting Villa under some severe pressure but they can’t seem to keep their composure in front of goal until Essien scores a belter in the 70th minute making the scores all tied. Straight from kick off Chelsea scored a 2nd, some poor defensive play from Villa gifted it. And then again from the next kick off Chelsea scored a 3rd. A double for Drogba has punished a poor Villa, who have now dropped down to 5th.? Man Utd are up next.

Premier Division (Round 10 vs Man Utd–h) / 22.10.05

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

No more players to return, so the same side plays United. The first half has started well especially with the poor form of late. Both teams have had some chances, Man Utd perhaps having the better but all have been failed to be taken leaving the score 0-0 at half-time.

Villa have started again well, looking fluid in their play but a fantastic save from Van Der Sar kept the scores even. A tight affair has ended 0-0 a scoreline the Villa will take after their recent form, but this makes it now 4 games without a win.

Carling Cup (Round 3 vs Everton–h) / 26.10.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Same side starts this 3rd round tie. Another dour game at Villa Park with neither side really controlling the game. Chances were very few with the scores being tied at 0-0 at half-time.

But Everton in the second half started the brighter, and took the lead through Van Der Meyde. Villa are clearly missing someone to dominate the midfield at the moment as McCann doesn’t seem to cut the standard. This made it another defeat so Villa’s Carling Cup run is over. But could Villa get revenge soon, as Everton visit Villa Park in the next league match.

Premier Division (Round 11 vs Everton–h) / 22.10.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Well its clear to see even the season hasn’t really fully got into groove yet, injuries have ruined it for Villa. It will be hard to have a successful season with the problems they have had. Franco is finally fit to reclaim his place back in goal however, so now most of the team are back available apart from Maldonado and Delgado.

Everton carried on their good performance last week starting the better at Goodison, but Villa scored through a break away in the 20th. 5 mins later Angel this time has scored on a counter making it 2-0 to Villa. Seems a much better performance thus far and G.M is thinking the bad run may finally end.

2nd half has started with the Villa backline looking a lot more organised and composed this match. The whole team are performing solidly, however yet another injury this time to Camoranesi threatens the good work done in this game. Everton are starting to pile on the pressure but Franco is living up to the standard producing some fine saves. Finally a victory for Villa ending this poor run of form. Leo takes the man of the match award home with him, very well deserved too.

Premier Division (Round 12 vs Reading–h) / 5.11.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Not a foregone conclusion this game, but Villa will be hoping to continue getting back on form after their success last week.

Reading had started the better until a fluent move from the back by Villa gave Farfan the chance to place a good cross into Baros who finished well. Villa are looking more dangerous and Reading are now down to 10 men after Baros was through one on one.

Villa continue to search for that 2nd goal but have an Angel goal disallowed for offside. He does win a penalty minutes later for Baros to convert making it 2-0 with 15 minutes on the clock left. Zebina makes a foolish mistake and then gets a needless redcard for the offense. Reading claw one back leaving a few nervous minutes left. But any doubts were put to bed after a sensational Carvalho striker in the 90th giving Villa another win.

Premier Division (Round 13 vs West Ham–h) / 19.11.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Hughes, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

With Zebina suspended Aaron Hughes deputised for him in this game.

It was a poor start for the Villa conceding a soft goal to West Ham through a lack of concentration at the back. But a quick chance to equalise from the spot was taken by Milan Baros making it 1-1. It’s a very tight affair at Villa Park and West Ham really should be winning, manufacturing the greater opportunities.

A mistake from McCann early in the 2nd stanza almost cost Villa but fortunately Franco made up for his error. The game has a draw written all over it, but Dean Ashton missed a glorious chance to give West Ham the victory, as did Angel later on in the 90th. Game ended 1-1, Villa fortunate to escape with a point many felt.

Premier Division (Round 14 vs Watford–a) / 26.11.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

A tough game away to Watford scrapping for survival this year, but the return of Zebina would help.

Villa started solidly looking the better side in the first 20. Then Villa took the lead after 25 minutes with a cool finish from Angel one on one with the keeper. Carvalho then doubles the advantage on 40 with continuing with his good form this year, and it looks like Villa now have this game under full control.

A fantastic team goal at the start of the 2nd half from a Zebina cross to Baros makes it 3-0. Watford never got a hold on the game and Villa put in a very good controlled performance. It looks to have put Villa in a very good position for top 6 this year.

Premier Division (Round 15 vs Blackburn–h) / 04.12.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Delgado finally looks ready to make an appearance for the Villa. Angel is moved to the bench for this game.

Villa have looked the better side creating more opportunities but can’t seem to find the finish until Delgado right on half time pounced upon a Friedel error in the Blackburn goal giving them a slender lead at the break.

Blackburn have started the 2nd half well looking for that equaliser and they got it through Savage with a free kick on 65. Straight after they move in front from a McCarthy finish and Villa are looking like they are going to lose this one lacking in both fluency and penetration. But Baros has spared their blushes converting a penalty to tie up the game on 80. Game finished 2-2.

Premier Division (Round 16 vs Wigan–a) / 10.12.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

It looks like Villa might be able to start playing a stable side now, with only Maldonado missing from the first-team line up.

Villa are making the early running in this match, but Zebina gives a penalty away and Wigan take the lead. They hold this till half time in a fairly quiet half.

Start of the 2nd half getting an equaliser through Delgado after starting with good intent. Since then the game went quiet again with both defenses clearly on top for the most. Villa have scored another draw in this one, with the game ending at 1 a piece.

Premier Division (Round 17 vs Tottenham–h) / 18.12.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Villa haven’t won in a couple so this will be a good chance to get back on track being at home with the same side starting 3 games in a row now.

A good start times that by 2 with a quick Baros double giving Villa a strong advantage with only 15 minutes gone. But Berbatov claws one back midway through the first half making it a contest again. The score is 2-1 Villa half-time.

Berbatov looks like he’s causing Villa some problems almost again scoring with a header, but Delgado grabs the next goal of the contest slotting in past Cerny giving them a 2 goal cushion yet again. A good win this for Villa, keeping their push on for a top 6.

Premier Division (Round 18 vs Fulham–a) / 26.12.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

These are two teams doing a lot better than expected, so a loss to either side could ruin the form they both have in the league this year. It will certainly give the winner a nudge for a top 6 spot.

A very tight game with the main highlight being a disallowed goal for Baros, leaving it all square at half-time in a game which probably deserved to be at 0-0 at this stage.

Villa then took the ascendancy seeming to have the 2nd half under control but can’t manufacture that winner despite all the golden chances they’ve had. But they finally make the breakthrough via Delgado in the 89th minute with a shot placed into the bottom right corner. Baros 5 minutes later put the game beyond doubt scoring the 2nd hitting Fulham on the counter after they went for the equaliser. This was certainly a huge win for Villa who are now unbeaten in 9.

Premier Division (Round 19 vs Man City–a) / 28.12.05

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, McCann, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

This game will be the half way point for Villa this year. A close game with few chances seems to be in play, but on the 30th minute Carvalho pounced in the box to give Villa the edge. The game has definitely opened up a lot more since Villa took the lead and Delgado almost doubled the lead on half time.

But If Delgado couldn’t, Farfan could stealing in on the far post from a first class Zebina delivery making it 2-0 to the Villa. Now in control, Villa closed out the game well with the scoreline remaining the same till the and Villa are looking settled, and in good shape for Europe even this early on.

G.M Annual Review:

With half the season gone, Villa have gone against all the Pre-Season predictions with those thinking they would struggle to achieve more than retaining top flight status this year.

The fans, more confident are still amazed at the position they find their side currently in. Currently laying 3rd in the table, competing with the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool Villa are finally up there with the big boys. This is even with an injury crisis that threatened to ruin their year early on.

It is unlikely there will be any January dealings unless there are any good deals on the go so the faith lays remained within the squad that started the year off. A top 4 spot at the end of the year is still unlikely to happen, but the race for a Uefa Cup spot spot is truly a possibility now.

G.M:“I’m truly delighted with the effort the lads have all put in. Despite the problems we have faced we have remained consistent giving 110% in every game. Europe is now something we can aim for, and with a bit of luck we should be able to reach my pre-season targetâ€.

Standings:

1.Man Utd – 46pts (+30) // 19 games

2.Chelsea – 41pts (+19) // 18 games

3.Aston Villa – 38pts (+18) // 19 games

4.Arsenal – 37pts (+12) // 19 games

5.Liverpool – 32pts (+11) // 18 games

6.Fulham – 32pts (+6) //19 games

Premier Division (Round 20 vs Sheff Utd–a) / 02.01.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Maldonado makes his long awaited return in the game against Sheffield, who are struggling bottom of the league.

Sheffield have started very well, but the luck G.M was on about is again going against Villa with Zebina injured early on. Hughes comes onto to take his place at right back. Villa now seemed to have settled down creating a couple of chances, and put one away in the 38th minutes through C.Delgado.

2nd half began with Sheffield on the offensive, but a counter attack on the hour gives Villa a 2-0 lead with a good cross from Camoranesi into Carvalho. Villa are now looking comfortable and score at 3rd through Baros in the 78th minute. The important saves from Sorenson at the start put Villa in good sted and the game finished 3-0.

Premier Division (Round 21 vs Liverpool–h) / 04.01.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Liverpool will be looking for revenge after their defeat earlier on in the season at Anfield, who go into this game as favourites.

Pool the take lead early on with an Alonso belter and they look in full control so far. Things go from bad to worse as Farfan is carried off injured. Villa should have equalised but Pepe Reina produced a magnificent save denying Baros. 1-0 to Pool at half-time.

Villa are going for the equaliser but Reina seems inspired in goal today producing another first class save. But another Alonso belter after Villa pressure gives Liverpool a goal out of nothing yet again making it 2-0. Villa clearly are missing a world class player to really compete with the best this year with Alonso clearly making the difference in this encounter. Farfan’s injury means he misses another 4 weeks of the season.

FA Cup (Round 3 vs Rotherham–h) / 07.01.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Villa’s first game in the FA cup gives them a home tie against Rotheram. On paper this should be a nice easy game and are heavy favourites to go into the next round.

The claret n blue have started in full control with an early goal giving them the advantage from a good Delgado finish. Berger puts away a 2nd in the 23rd minute and it seems a question of how many Villa are going to score. Carvalho scores a 3rd on the half hour mark and Villa are playing some flowing football.

Villa are now coasting with Baros getting a 4th early in the 2nd half from the spot. Still bossing the game and Camoranesi finished a good move on the hour. Villa were quite content to play out the remainder of the game, with the score ending 5-0

Premier Division (Round 22 vs Charlton–h) / 14.01.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Maldonado, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

With Farfan still out Berger remains to play on the left wing for this game against Charlton. Villa will be looking to bounce back after their unlucky home defeat to Liverpool.

Villa have taken the game to Charlton with some constant pressure and it only took 15 minutes for the deadlock to be broken with Mellberg scoring. Villa looked to have made the game safe with a well worked 40th minute goal from Delgado.

Villa are now in complete command it they still look the most likely to score putting on more pressure at the start of the 2nd half. Playing some fantastic football they keep coming close to the 3rd but some good goalkeeping has kept the second half scoreless. A comfortable win here for the Villa.

Premier Division (Round 22 vs Middlesborough–a) / 21.01.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti,, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Hot news for Villa fans, with Lerner willing to sign a high profile player and finances not an issue, G.M has decided to bolster his midfield by signing French international Pedretti for 12.5million. Villa have lacked a leader and someone that can boss the game from there, so hopefully Pedretti is the answer. He makes his debut immediately against the borough.

Villa suffer an early blow in this match with Mellberg being taken off injured. Since then Borough look the more dangerous going close twice with Villa still readjusting.

Borough still look the more likely to score in the 2nd half but Leo Franco is playing a very good game until the sub Aaron Hughes gifts a penalty making it 1-0 to Borough. Villa still seem to have zero luck with injuries. Borough held on for a 1-0 win.

FA Cup (Round 4 vs Man Utd–h) / 28.01.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti,, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

The same side starts for this FA clash with Man Utd at Villa Park. Perhaps Villa’s last chance for any success this season lays here, so with the fans behind them they hope to cause an upset.

This game is a lot more open than the league clash last time with chances galore at both ends. But both teams are still failing to find the net with both goalkeepers making some important saves. It definitely has the feel of a cup tie with last ditch tackles flying in from all angles too. The Villa draw first blood on 40 minutes with a cross from Delgado to the arriving Carvalho in the box. But this lead lasts seconds as Saha gets an equaliser straight from the kick off a way Villa seem to concede a lot of their goals.

The same combination however strikes again in the 2nd half, a cross from Delgado into Carvalho who gets his second of the game with a good strike into the bottom corner. Man Utd are looking threatening again but Delgado creates yet another goal crossing into Baros who puts it passed the helpless Van Der Sar making it 3-1 to the Villa. An upset on the cards? Man Utd refuse to give up with Fletcher pounding on an Ujfalusi error making the score 3-2 and United continue to attack.Solksjaer has come onto make it 3-3 after Ronaldo dribbled past the Villa defence. A replay is needed at Old Trafford after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Premier Division (Round 24 vs Portsmouth–h) / 01.02.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti,, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Villa’s last bit of dealing in the market see’s Gavin McCann join Blackburn since Pedretti has come in. Having lost the last two games Villa could do with a win and they have a game vs Portsmouth at home next.

A very shaky start for Villa with Pompey missing a golden chance to score first Lua Lua hitting the post. He made no mistake this time scoring from a Franco parry and Villa are hitting bad form. Zebina now red carded for another stupid challenge which has ruined any chance of getting anything from the game. Lua Lua makes it 2-0 to Pompey and the alarm bells are ringing for Villa. Campo though now has a red card making it 10 men a piece.

A Baros consolation in the 90th minute was the only real highlight of the 2nd half in a game Villa have disappointed in again and are now hitting bad form.

Premier Division (Round 25 vs Newcastle–a) / 04.02.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Hughes, Samuel,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti,, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

2 players from the last game are missing, both Villa fullbacks but Farfan returns to replace Berger for this tough trip away to Newcastle.

A break away from the Villa see’s Carvalho coolly wrong footing Given giving them an early 1-0 lead. The partnership between Delgado and Baros is looking good, but this time Baros turns provider to Delgado giving Villa a 2 goal cushion.

Iaquinta however grabs a goal for Newcastle who are now looking threatening for a 2nd. He scores soon after his first goal making it 2-2 and the game is back on. Villa have dominated the midfield since Farfan’s return but clearly have missed their 2 fullbacks in this game. The game quietened from this point and ended in a 2-2 draw.

FA Cup Replay (Round 4 vs Man Utd–a) / 11.02.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Agathe, Berger, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Villa’s best chance was definitely in the home leg but the defense cost them the game. The odds are heavily against them causing an upset now. The fullbacks return but Camoranesi misses out being injured as well as Delgado.

To the amazement of Old Trafford Villa take a shock lead by a Silvestre error letting Angel through. Soon after another defensive error gives Angel his 2nd taking it around the keeper. Franco makes a vital save keeping the 2 goal cushion intact but United are piling the pressure on now. Villa still look dangerous however on the counter. Mellberg concedes a penalty that Scholes converts making it 1-2.

Its still a very close game with Man United making the headway but can’t create that clearcut chance with many shots coming from outside the box. Can the Villa hold on? Franco saves a one on one with Saha and its now constant bombardment at the Villa goal. Angel had a chance to make it 3-1 but it was saved. But minutes later a Villa counter saw Carvalho score from inside the box making it 3-1 now and the game was then Villa’s. A great effort with Franco proving his worth with another man of the match performance. The Villa go marching on!

Premier Division (Round 26 vs Bolton–h) / 15.02.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina, Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Agathe, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Delgado returns despite Angel’s double vs United as we return back into league action With the Villa at home against Bolton.

Villa’s league form has been bad of late, and it continues to get worse with Bolton scoring on the break from Anelka. It should have been 2-0 after an Ujfalusi error. Villa go in down 1-0.

An early goal from the Baros Delgado partnership has made things all square with Delgado getting the goal. Villa are now looking the better outfit and are pushing to nose their heads infront. But Bolton remained solid throughout and the game ended 1-1.

FA Cup (Round 5 vs Chelsea–a) / 18.02.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Hughes, Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Agathe, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

No luck with injuries, no luck with cup draws either. This round 5 game see’s Villa travel to Chelsea so its going to need another bit of fortunate Ii Villa are to scrape through this one. Zebina misses the game through injury to make things even harder.

The game has started well for Villa, and G.M took a gamble on Carvalho for this game as he needs a rest. But he’s given Villa the lead early on. Villa are now clinging on, and this seems like a repeat of the 3-1 loss last game these teams met. And it seems it is, a huge blow for Villa with Mellberg getting injured yet again but Ferriera for Chelsea has given away a bad foul and is red carded. This game could be closer than one would have first thought. Villa had a goal and a man advantage going into the 2nd half.

But Chelsea score right after half time by Joe Cole making this tie all square again. Both teams have had chances to win it but eventually Baros scores a scrappy Villa goal right at the death making it 2-1 and yet another memorable FA cup Victory goes to Villa Park. Injuries to Farfan and Mellberg for 4 weeks were the casualties however post game.

Premier Division (Round 27 vs Arsenal–a) / 25.02.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina , Chiellini,, Bouma, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Another hard game for Villa who now travel to the Emirates to play Arsenal. A few returning to this game, Zebina and Camoranesi although Mellberg is replaced by Bouma due to the injury against Chelsea.

Arsenal’s first attack see’s a goal with a good strike from Baptista and Villa have yet to settle in at all. Villa are struggling to cope with the Arsenal style of play and it looks like a matter of time before they score their 2nd. But its still 1-0 at half-time.

Complacency may have hit Arsenal, as Carvalho scores a goal with a very good strike pass Buffon making it 1-1. Villa now take a shock lead hitting Arsenal on the counter with Delgado scoring a very good goal showing great composure into the corner. But the lead is short lived with Hudson scoring from a simple cross making it 2-2.He then popups to score a 3rd and probably the winner after some poor Villa defending, clearly missing Mellberg at the back. But late drama with Camoranesi scoring passed Buffon making it 3-3. Hudson then misses a glorious chance to resteal all 3 points for the Arsenal and Villa have escaped with a draw.

Premier Division (Round 28 vs Chelsea–a) / 04.03.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina , Chiellini,, Bouma, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Agathe, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Agathe takes Camoranesi’s place for this game due to suspension. Chelsea will sure be looking for revenge after their FA cup home defeat against the Villa in this one.

Villa have started very well controlling the game infact against a strong Chelsea team. But there are no goals for it thus far with Cech performing well in goal. But Pedretti’s first goal for Villa from 30 yards has given them a deserved lead.

2nd half and Villa were unlucky not to get a 2nd Lampard surely should have been sent-off but remains on the pitch. Will the ref boo-boo cost the Villa? Still showing some invention they are creating chances and Chelsea don’t seem to have got into the game at all. Forlan missed a glorious opportunity to equalise in injury time shooting wide giving Villa the 3 points and another fantastic result.

Premier Division (Round 29 vs Man Utd–a) / 11.03.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Hughes , Chiellini,, Bouma, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

G.M has decided to give Carvalho a break in preparation for the FA cup tie coming up soon vs Everton so Liguera makes his debut in this one.

Villa have started off well with Baros giving them the lead. Soon after its doubled by Baros again showing good anticipation pouncing on the rebound.

Carrick however scored early in the second half making it 2-1, and Saha pounced on a Franco error making it 2-2 with 25 minutes left. Farfan then gets a 2nd yellow so puts Villa down to 10 men who are really up against it now. Can Villa hang on for a draw? A bit of Rooney magic gives United the lead in an amazing turn around with the backline of Villa again leaking in too many goals. United get a 4th through Giggs at the death leaving G.M wondering who to rid of and buy for next season at the back.

Premier Division (Round 30 vs Everton–h) / 19.03.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Berger, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Zebina returns as does Mellberg although Berger has to come in for the suspended Farfan. A preview before the FA cup game in midweek, a win for either side will give them a psychological advantage for the tie on Wednesday.

Its been an even game until a fantastic strike from Van Der Meyde gives Everton the lead at Villa Park. But Baros soon after finds himself in a one-on-one with the keeper and keeps his nerve placing it passed Howard to make it 1-1.

Again the half is very even but Everton seem to be creating the better chances and look the more likely to score. But no goals came and the game ended 1-1.

FA Cup (Round 6 vs Everton–h) / 22.03.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Carvalho again needs a rest but G.M needs him for this tie. Farfan returns so it’s the strongest VillaXI out possible. They will be needed for this tie as Everton are proving quite difficult for Villa this year.

Villa have started out brightly forcing a few corners with Delgado forcing a decent save. But Everton have now settled and it’s a tight affair as all games this year between the two have been.

Carvalho unfortunately took a knock and has needed to be taken off at half time so in comes Petrov. Finally a team breaks the deadlock and it’s the Villa with a cross from Baros into Delgado who finishes well. The game is bound to open up now, and it does. But its Villa creating the chances and look more likely to kill the game off. They so just this, with a precise Delgado cross into the sub Petrov has finished the Everton off giving Villa a 2-0 win and move into the next round.

Premier Division (Round 31 vs Reading–a) / 25.03.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan, Liguera, Delgado, Baros

G.M once again rests Carvalho giving Liguera another chance. Apart from this the Villa squad is finally injury free and healthy.

After a bad miss from Reading, Villa go and punish some poor Reading defending with Delgado getting the goal. Baros soon after doubles the lead. Reading refuse to lay down however with Lita scoring a good goal for Reading. But Baros pounces on a rebound after a striked free kick getting the two goal advantage back. Reading are still pushing forward and testing Leo Franco frequently but he’s been up to the task.

2nd half although having chances they don’t seem to be clear cut for either side with a lack of urgency being shown from Villa. They do get a 4th though and its Delgado scoring from more poor defending giving him his first Villa hatrick.

Premier Division (Round 32 vs West Ham–a) / 01.04.06

-VillaXI: Franco, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

It’s a strong Villa side for this game, with no niggles or players needing a rest. With only the cup and league games left, they will be hoping for a strong finish to the campaign. Villa currently lay in 5th but the table is tight and European football is nowhere near guaranteed yet at all.

West Ham have started very well creating a few good early chances but Franco has kept Villa in it for the moment, although he’s taken a slight knock. Ujfalusi however gives a penalty away and the Hammers take the lead via Noble. Ujfalusi concedes yet another penalty and Noble scores again making it 2-0. It seems through Mellberg’s inconsistency and Ujfalusi’s G.M needs to heavily invest in some quality centrebacks.

2nd half and Tevez adds a 3rd and its getting very embarrassing for Aston Villa now. Villa have lost all momentum in their push for Europe and a top 6 place now looks unlikely.

Premier Division (Round 33 vs Watford–h) / 09.04.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Villa really need a win from this game but so do Watford who are 2nd from bottom. Again it’s a strong Villa side hoping to perform a lot better than they did last game, except for Leo Franco who is out for 4 weeks.

An early penalty converted by Baros gives Villa an early advantage and soon after Baros pounces on a defensive error making it 2-0 with seconds. Now its all Villa and Watford look capable of offering little resistance. Chiellini made it 3-0 in the 25th minute and Villa are in 100% control.

2nd half is going much the same way, with Chiellini getting forward again bagging his 2nd of the game from left back. The game ended a comfortable 4-0 win for the Villa with a much better performance today.

Premier Division (Round 34 vs Blbackburn–a) / 15.04.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

The same 11 start for this game with Blackburn. Villa played poor against this outfit last time so G.M will want to make sure they don’t do a double.

A careless penalty given by Blackburn gave Baros a chance from the spot which he took giving Villa the lead. But Pederson soon equalised making it 1-1. Reid then gave Blackburn the lead scoring an absolute belter A defensive error from Mcevely gave Delgado the chance to equalise and he took it making it 2 a piece in an exciting game.

The score remains 2-2 after an hour with both sides still pushing for the winner but a draw looking likely. This is how it remained finishing 2-2.

Premier Division (Round 35 vs Wigan–h) / 17.04.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

Villa have now slipped into 6th, with Liverpool in 5th and Middlesborough laying in 4th place. So still a lot to play for and Villa really must make home advantage count.

Villa are looking a class above their opponents today, with Carvalho scoring in the 25th minute giving them a 1-0 lead into half-time.

Wigan are trying hard to get themselves back into the game, as they have to being in the relegation zone. But Villa still have an element control of the game. Villa are needing to defend though at the backend of this game, but a classic counter attack sees Baros ending the Wigan fight with the game ending at 2-0.

FA Cup (Semi Final vs Newcastle–n) / 23.04.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan Carvalho, Delgado, Baros

A big game for both sides, with the winner advancing into the final. Again Leo Franco misses out for the Villa but the rest are available. Two attacking sides should lead to a classic encounter.

Baros gives Villa the perfect start, hitting Newcastle on the break with the assist from Delgado. But Iaquinta equalises soon after making the tie all that much nervous again. Wasn’t the best piece of goalkeeping from Sorenson. But Baros restores the Villa lead although Emre replies immediately making it 2-2. And Villa score a 3rd goal in the same half with Carvalho scoring from a Farfan cross. Can Villa finally hold onto the lead? But a big blue to Villa right on half-time as Ujfalusi is carried off injured.

A lot of knocks are being taken from the Villa players, but this doesn’t seemed to have phased them, with Carvalho scoring his 2nd of the game with a very well placed finish passed Given making it 4-2. Surely Villa can hold on, and Villa hit Newcastle on the counter again with Delgado calmly scoring passed Given and the game looks safe. Newcastle won’t give in and have scored their 3rd of the game a 30 yard screamer from Scott Parker. But its too little too late for Newcastle and Villa are through to the FA Cup final!

Premier Division (Round 36 vs Tottenham–a) / 26.04.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan, Liguera, Delgado, Angel

Villa have a couple of injuries for this game after their tough encounter with Newcastle in the FA Cup semi’s. Baros and Carvalho two key players are missing, so Angel and Liguera start against Tottenham. But Europe is still up for place and it’s a game Villa really must get something from.

Spurs are putting the Villa under some early pressure with Berbatov who caused them problems last time hitting the crossbar. But Villa have survived the early onslaught and looked to have settled. Angel puts Villa infront with a headed goal, but Davids replies instantly from 30 yards making it 1-1. Villa retake the lead with a fantastic individual effort from Farfan cutting inside and placing a shot into the bottom corner Christiano Ronaldo style.

Tottenham started the 2nd half brightly but were hit on the counter attack a good finish from Liguera, showing he’s a good backup who is willing to fight for a first team place. But a penalty conceded gave Murphy a chance to score from the spot which he did, making it a nervous last 15 minutes. But a weakened Villa held on to claim a very important away victory. Pedretti put in a first class performance and is starting to show his quality.

Premier Division (Round 37 vs Fulham–h) / 29.04.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan, Liguera, Delgado, Angel

If Villa can win their remaining two games they have a slight chance for hitting 4th spot. But if they do, they’ll have to do it without Carvalho and Baros for this game against Fulham.

First chance of the game goes to Fulham with a free kick well saved from Sorenson. But Villa are quick to settle creating some good chances but still can’t score past Niemi. But a blow to Villa as Delgado is taken off injured so Park Young comes in to replace. A set piece chance and a set piece goal, scrappy but Liguera won’t mind scoring his 2nd for the Villa. Fulham seem a bit shocked and Angel finishes clinically doubling their advantage. So far so good for the Villa.

The 2nd half is very quiet, with both sides not really creating anything significant, with many shots coming from outside the area. Game ended a comfortable 2-0 win for Villa who have their last game left away to Man City. Delgado's season will be over with the news he is out for 2 months so cup final heartbreak for him.

Premier Division (Round 38 vs Man City–a) / 07.05.06

-VillaXI: Sorenson, Zebina , Chiellini,, Mellberg, Ujfalusi, Pedretti, Camoranesi, Farfan, Carvalho, Angel, Baros

Villa have Carvalho and Baros back for the final game of the season. And with the way the results have gone, all Villa fans can afford to relax as Liverpool slipped up in their last game. Villa are in clear 4th and have qualified for the Champions League Qualifiers, so all focus will be on the cup final after this game against West Ham.

But this hasn’t stopped Villa from trying to claim a win against the city. A goal within 5 minutes by Baros gives them the lead after some good work from Camoranesi and Angel. But Joey Barton scores a very good goal outside the box equalising for city.

City were the better side in the first half, and have started the 2nd better with Sorenson numerous times keeping City out. Another special from City by Hamann this time gives them the lead. Not the best preparation before a cup final for Villa this. But with top 4 secure its been a very good season for G.M and his squad.

Man City 2 – Aston Villa 1
