OI versus odd-man midfields (4-5-1, 3-5-2)?

Recommended Posts

A quick question for the tactical gurus out there...

I've had some success with a pretty standard Rule of One 4-4-2 playing a lower Scottish league side, but keep running into problems when I face a team that uses an odd-man midfield (3-5-2 or 4-5-1) -- it all goes sideways whether my opponent is a upper-division side or dead last in my league.

I know a lot of folks have success using OI to combat these sorts of formations, but I'm really at a loss as to how it would be best accomplished against these formations (and especially when they aren't using their wingers as attackers -- either using a flat 4-5-1 or a defensive 3-5-2 with the outside players as WBs). It seems like closing down on three MCs makes it impossible to hold a good defensive shape, and leaving the wings unmarked yields chance after chance at the far post.

Thoughts? All thanks to St. Jude for favors granted...
