Starting with this past 2022 season the Icelandic top flight had a different format and will have for the foreseeable future.
Changes are:
After the first 22 games like in the past, the league is split up into upper and lower playoffs.
upper is the top6 and lower is the bottom6
these teams will then play a single round robin
so total amount of games is 27
the fixtures line up in the following way for the last 5 games of the season. ( 1st = team that finished 1st after 22 games, 2nd = team that finished 2nd after 22 games etc. etc. )
upper round 1(home vs away): 1st vs 6th / 2nd vs 4th / 3rd vs 5th
upper2: 3rd vs 1st / 5th vs 4th / 6th vs 2nd
upper3: 2nd vs 3rd / 1st vs 5th / 4th vs 6th
upper4: 4th vs 1st / 6th vs 3rd / 2nd vs 5th
upper5: 1st vs 2nd / 3rd vs 4th / 5th vs 6th
lower is exactly the same, where 7th -> 1st, 8th -> 2nd, 9th -> 3rd etc. etc. and games line up the same in terms of home vs away
after 27 games, 1st is crowned champion, 7th wins the presidents cup, 11nd and 12th are relegated down to 2nd tier.
