Have never used FM online, how does it work? (especially with steam)

Myself and my friend used to play CM03/04 over a LAN network a few years back.

We are both intending to buy the new FM09 and play it online (as we no longer live in the same house).

Does it operate in the same way as the LAN games in 03/04?

Are there any features that are omitted?

Is there any sort of inbuilt voice chat program?

Can anyone tell me of their experiences the online features of FM08?
