How do you get players to like you?

I have just completed a season with Cardiff City, I ended up winning the title. However after checking each of my players I found not one player has me listed as their favourite member of staff. I know from previous versions of FM how important it is to build relationships with players but the only way I know how to do that is by talking to them each week. I find this approach VERY VERY tedious, especially given some of the off the wall results you get. Is there a better way of getting your team to like you that I don't know about, or am I doomed to do the weekly talk for months on end until the player comes around?
