Assists for own goals?

I was winning 3 nil and one of the goals was an own goal I look at the CM as he had a high rating and saw that he had 2 assists and the other CM had one. Do players get credited with assists in real life for own goals?

This is from Wikipedia:

"An attacking player may be awarded an assist for contributing to an own goal."

So, I guess if the attacker kicks the ball and the defender is forced to stop it and he concedes an own goal, it's an assist. That's how I'm reading it, at least.
