Apparently, in this winter patch, which is supposed to be final and perhaps by the end of this week it will be shown, there are supposed to be improvements to the match engine. We'll see how true that is. The movement of players in the defensive game, positioning in relation to the opponent and the field where the ball is should be fixed, if not, then a bit poorly with this version and I will wait for FM25 and FM24 will go to the showcase for a few months, because so far this version does not convince me to play

I loved it at first, seeing the new positional stuff, but now 600 hours in I’m finding it absolutely horrendous. I’ve literally just lost a game 3-2 (usual AI comeback) where all goals were from throw ins and corners. It’s awful.

There’s so much to fix, if they are even bothering. If not, I too am done with it until 25.

  2. I used a 4-4-2 most of the time in my rebuilding Man United save, with Lorenzo Lucca scoring for fun as a target man, so it can be done.

I’m in season 5 now and Lorenzo has moved on so sadly I can’t share in detail how I did it. However, it was a solid variation of the 4-4-2 wing play in built tactic.

In trickier games I abandoned the 4-4-2 though for an extra centre mid, away to top sides for example. So don’t use it constantly. Mix and match, mix and match.

No context in your OP, like your tactic or what Club you're managing etc. If you need help we need some context please.

I don’t think context is always required, there is some generic advice available.

I would say replay the game over and over to understand how the mechanics work. Keep your current system and keep slightly tweaking and see how it affects things.

I would never use a positive mentality if you’re getting swamped by the press, and make sure you’ve got a high def line or you will get penned in.

Try to outnumber the oppo in midfield so you’ve always got a spare man to pass to - however, make sure the roles are right - you don’t want too many players on attacking duties in centre mid or too far away from everyone else. I use an anchor, DLP and CM in a 4-3-3 in such games for example. With my wide players the attacking threat.

Try a BPD on cover as he drops a bit deeper and can find a bit of space

Try playing with a balanced or cautious mentality. Try playing with a target man on direct passing.

I don’t think there is one easy answer. Suck and see would be my advice - it’s very rare I use anyone’s tactics on here as every team is different and every game is different. It’s an old cliche on here but don’t put round pegs in square holes. Play to your strengths

Your in game tweaks are more important than how you start the game, in the more recent FM’s, in my opinion. So adapt to how the game is unfolding. Watch full games.

I said it’s relative to the league you are in, so it needs checking whenever you play the game. How in the world should I know the averages in YOUR game. Stop being lazy and looking for the easy way out. There is some effort required with the game. Otherwise go play tic tac toe.

I have no idea what tic tac toe is. How do you know what a good teamwork stat is, in tic tac toes?

The official manual states that the team work attibute comes into play here:

    "Teamwork

How well the player follows tactical instructions and works for and alongside their teammates. A team full of players with a high rating here works better as a unit. Players with lower ratings slack off and do not ‘buy in’ to the team ethos, becoming more individual, and not providing adequate support for their teammates. It is also used to help decide whether or not a player opts to use one of their Player Traits ahead of a tactical instruction."

Say I’m managing a lower league team where the player ratings are low by nature. What is then considered a high teamwork rating? If my highest teamwork player is 12 and the rest are at 8, what does that mean for a tactic? Will they all do what they want?

On the flip side, what is considered a high teamwork rating in a top side? Will Roony Bardgjhi do as he is told with a teamwork rating of 13 when everyone else might be at 15+?

I find it all so subjective and ambiguous personally.

I'm now into my third season as Middlesbrough manager and overall I can now make an opinion that the game is simply average.

The ME is ok. I have no major grievances with it. Some small improvements on FM23 but not a lot.

The main issues I have that are well documented are the AI squad planning.

Chelsea have one player out on loan for the 25/26 season. One! City have two.

I use the in-game editor and the amount of young players with +160 PA but continue to sit in their club's reserves is crazy.

United have a 21 year-old striker with 113 CA and 170 PA and hasn't played a competitive match in 15 months following on from a successful 6 month loan. His asking price is still £30m for some reason.

Celtic have a midfielder with similar CA and PA and he has been limited to a handful of substitute appearances and yet isn't loan listed. His CA hasn't changed since he came back from his loan move a year ago.

Brighton have a 21 year-old striker with a CA of 87 and PA of 156. Again no appearances, no loans (ever), but it'll take £28m to prise him away.

Evan Ferguson, one of the best young players in the game has made 13 starts in two seasons.

I get some young players in real life naturally don't fulfill their potential, but what I'm witnessing on FM24 is absolutely pathetic.

Oh, and press conferences remain as bad as ever. Thanks for not bothering to improve that for the fifth+ year in a row despite widespread criticism from the SI community.

Overall, this game is basically FM23 in a new fancy new box.

Some small improvement? Are you playing the same game as me? It’s the only reason I’m looking past all of the bugs and non-ME flaws, it’s absolutely beautiful, in my opinion.

I find if you ask your FB/WBs to sit narrower but then run wide/run inside when in possession you get the best of both worlds for covering space in front of the defensive line and for not leaving space in the half spaces

This has completely changed the dynamic of my current tactic. So simple and obvious really but something I hadn’t tried. The full backs cutting in frees up my wingers brilliantly. Cheers man 👍🏼

  8. Is the match engine geared around these now?

Every AI team seems to play with them now and I’m struggling like hell to keep clean sheets when I play with traditional full backs/ wing backs - there just seems to be too much space for the AI to exploit, in front of the back 4/ the gaps between centre backs and full backs.
