  1. 2020/21 - Update 3 (Sacked Again)

The season by season updates will actually be season by season updates when I finally manage to stop myself getting sacked. A short 3 months or so spell at Carlisle did not go well, with just win in my entire run - the highlight being a 10-0 defeat to Grimsby. As with the sacking at Newcastle earlier in the season, I was given 5 matches to find 9 points. That was not forthcoming. The scores for matches during the tenure, whilst there was some injury problems but my tactics were also clearly incompatible to the club, much like Mike Basset I stuck with  4-4-2 for far too long and the players struggle to adapt to late attempts to find something more interesting. A non-existent transfer budget and tight wage budget weren't much help. The very heavy defeats at the end were during that 5 matches with no hope spell when I took on the role of petulant manager deliberately not caring and fielding wildly inappropriate teams and giving players poor team talks knowing the writing was on the wall - to be honest an extremely fun endeavour that may crop up again in this career update. I'm childish I know, but I'm interested in just how heavy a defeat I could possibly get via that tactic. Having taken up the position on the 18th December 2019, I was sacked on the 28th March 2020 having won a single game in 21 and suffering 19 without a win, obviously statistics the board were not happy with.

So at the end of my second tenure as manager I leave another club fighting off relegation in a worse position than when I took over.

And that leaves my career stats somewhat more than underwhelming. Now then, which idiots will hire me now.

  2. 2020/21 Season (Update 2)- I Guess I'm a Journeyman now.

The title said wherever would have me, and it appears very clearly that wherever would have me is a raft of League Two clubs fighting off relegation, Carlisle United offered me a job first the interview went reasonably okay. Already had one interview mocking my 4 league relegation but hey that's the breaks in this world, isn't it? They won't be laughing when Carlisle win the Champions League..... Board expectations for the remainder of this season are fairly reasonable, getting out of the relegation scrap essentially.

Which given the current table in League Two is going to be more than enough of a task at hand in itself, the chances of challenging for play-offs let alone automatic promotion distant, but as a spring-board to try and gain some managerial experience in order to get towards that end goal it's a perfect opportunity.

I'll be back at the end of the season to update on how I've faired.

  3. Intro

Playing as myself, I set myself to a manager with the default settings relevant to the Premier League, with the intention of managing my boyhood club Newcastle United to success and taking them to the Champions League final. The press and many fans were a bit unhappy at the prospect of a sprightly 23 year old running the club - supposedly  I'd had 10 caps and 4 goals internationally; surely not bad for such a young'un - but I had confidence in myself. What could go wrong you wonder. I’ll keep the updates to Season by Season unless anything of major note (Sacked, A Cup Win/League Win or choosing to move/takeover) happens.

2020/21 Season - A Bad Start to the Boyhood Dream

The pre-season seemed to go relatively well, comfortably beating teams we were expected to beat, apart from the expected first game doldrums. A few draws but no losses in the entire pre-season. As you can imagine, this inspired confidence that the dreams I had for the team could possibly be fulfilled. The board was not all that accommodating to requests for players I actually wanted as they were too expensive, so I bought in Branislav Ivanovic as a reliable and experienced figure and blew most of the transfer budget on him and some more minor players for the youth set up.

And then the season proper got underway. Whilst there were some things to take a bit of confidence there were surely things certainly not to take confidence in. Getting to the 4th Round of the Carabao Cup was certainly by far the highlight of the short running, however the tactic of sacrificing any further run to focus on the league, by playing the U18’s with 7 goalkeepers named as subs in the 4th round backfired - leading to a demoralising 10-0 club record defeat and two red cards that even the first team seemed to be dispirited by on top of their form in the league. By the time of the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace Lee Charnley and the board had clearly lost patience; giving me 5 games to get 9 points - an injury time winner by Watford didn’t help that cause, and defeat to Everton confirmed the failure.  Ivanovic was a constant disappointment and the team was plagued by injuries to a raft of key players for my fluid counter attack style. Football Manager's decision to taunt me with takeover promises that fell through was a bit of amusing realism too far though especially as it led to a transfer embargo....

20th place and 6 points from 16 games isn't going to do much for your survival chances with any Premier League club.

Now obviously with a run like this the first instinct is to delete the save pretend it never happened, doing some research about this years wonder-kids and better transfer policies and start over. But I've done that with better saves than this enough no this time I'll keep the save and I will retain the goal to take Newcastle to the Champions League final - however it looks as though I will be going the long way round, needing to prove my credentials elsewhere first.

Time to go searching for the next job to rebuild my managerial career and reputation. A short managerial tenure with 11 straight league defeats was certainly not the sort of start to my career I was looking for. The question is, with such a poor record in my only managerial stint, who will be stupid enough to have me; off to the Job Centre.
