  1. The FM start screen shows a locker room from your current save with proper shirts, names, and additional gimicks. The electric outlets in the locker room are however always socket type G (UK and related). Let's adjust that, so that if I play in Germany, I get type F sockets and in the US I see type A ones etc.

  2. After my successful first season in Uruguay, I resigned from the Liverpool F.C. manager post and went looking for a new challenge. And I found an amazing opportunity:

    Screenshot_1.png.fd8f20b840cff0b8be081af508a57381.png

    Chilean top tier club Colo Colo had finished the 2022 season in 8th place, meaning they missed out on the international competition places. Obviously, the previous manager had not survived this devastating result and they were now looking for a new boss.

    The club is still solid - rich transfer budget, good playing squad, proper finances. Looks like we can survive a year outside the Libertadores at least financially. More than that: we might even benefit from playing fewer matches than our rivals?

    Tactics-wise, I went for a 5-2-3 formation. The three defenders provided a solid backline in most matches while the three guys up top went about scoring goals. Specifically, right-winger Marco Bolados would go on to score 31 goals and win the league's top goal scorer award.

    The first half of the season was a breeze. We went unbeaten for 14 matches before losing the last match against Union La Calera. Still, a very solid top position secured.

    The Chilean season has a 1.5 month break after the first half of the season, where they play most rounds of the Copa de Chile,

    Screenshot_10.png.8c097b513a1921318fb1c412fc4bf75f.png

    Interestingly, we faced top division opposition only in the early rounds (Palestino and Universidad de Chile) whereas the rest of the competition was mostly dominated by second division teams. The semi-final legs against Barnechea were the toughest matches in the competition. Once we were through there, we  rather easily coasted past Cobresal in the final. Copa de Chile winners!

    In August we also went back to play the second half of the league season. We mostly maintained our great form and actually sealed the Campeonato AFP PlanVital title with a 2-0 win against Everton da Vina, 5 matches before the end of the season. This also explains the poor results towards the end - we were just rotating players to give them some match experience.

    Screenshot_7.png.b96e8957cc3ba89d13ab370d368cbaee.png

    It was good to have some headroom before second-placed Huachipato. We were actually fined a deduction of 6 points at the end of the year for violating league rules about fielding one U-21 player in at least 70% of our match time. This one is on me for not having read the fine-print.

    We have two of the three Chilean titles sealed now, but I'm going to stick around for at least another season because we still need to win the Supercopa. And maybe we can make some way into the Copa Libertadores here, although I'm not counting on winning it with a Chilean team.

  3. Liverpool F.C. - Squad and Tactics

    We take over Liverpool F.C. in January 2022. The squad have a lot of strikers and defenders, but seems to be slightly lacking in midfield.

    Screenshot_11.png.d9e59029ae330d5ab3ba0fbd7f75d700.png

    With a transfer budget of 8,000 EUR, there are no great investments, so we looked at the free transfer market, finding some gems.

    At the same time, we also made two high-profile sales during the summer break. Ignacio Ramirez was on loan at Rennes at the beginning of the season and returned in June. He refused a new contract, so I sold him for 1.1M. Federico Martinez was actually quite good, but his wage of 18,000 per month made up nearly a quarter of our 80,000 p/m wage budget. No way to negotiate him down, so we cut our losses here by selling him off.

    Supercopa Uruguaya - Winners

    Our first competitive match of the season was the Uruguayan Super Cup against Nacional. We were expected to lose and indeed we were down 0-2 by the 60th minute. Then I decided to bring in Santiago Viera. And to everyone's surprise, he went on to score 3 goals within 7 minutes to seal us the victory. First match - first national competition won!

    Campeonato Uruguayo, Opening Stage - 3rd

    Screenshot_14.png.0e535997530debb473fa24f7a8a7825b.png

    We struggled a bit during the initial months of our campaign - we were still on the market for a few players and trying to sort out a suitable tactic for the team. Hence, we lost some ground. Embarrassing moment of the year: 2-0 up against Nacional at half time, before losing the match 2-4.

    A winning run in April catapulted us up the table. We finished 3rd. Nacional won the opening stage.

    Screenshot_13.png.e4c140700205eb04abd9b08144645a3c.png

    Campeonato Uruguayo, Torneo Intermedio - 3rd

    Uruguay has three consecutive league stages and in summer the league splits up into groups for the intermediate stage. We were better than in the Apertura, but essentially lost our group in the first match, where we went down 0-1 against later group winners River Plate.

    Screenshot_18.png.db5ee46d2b5456040f22fc3f25b2b429.png

    This loss and two draws against Nacional and Plaza Colonia meant we finished 3rd again.

    Campeonato Uruguayo, Closing Stage - 1st

    Clausura. Finally settled in with the team and a tactic. This should be our time!

    Screenshot_22.png.d3519a720b3eea8c26f8ea4226750448.png

    We got our revenge against River Plate and bet Nacional 4-2 away! Most other matches went well, too, but an unexpected 0-1 against Plaza Colonia and a series of draws in October made things more exciting than they should. On the last day we were ahead on goal difference against M.C. Torque. We won our match, they only drew - we were Clausura winners!

    Screenshot_20.png.c7b128ada85ddcd8539884f6e3da7142.png

    This not only meant we'd be competing for the title, but also settled us to finish 3rd in the overall league table, meaning we'll have a chance to qualify for the Libertadores group stage next spring. (Only places 1+2 qualify directly.)

    Championship - Winners

    Uruguay has  a fun system to determine the annual champion. First, we'd play a single-leg semifinal against the winners of the Apertura - Nacional. We bet them 2-1 and advanced to the final. This would be a 2-legged series against the top team from the overall points table - Nacional again! I was afraid after a 0-0 draw against their B side at home, but we went into the away tie and bet them 3-1. Champions of Uruguay!

    International Competitions

    Just for the records, no excitement here. We participated in the Libertadores group stage.

    Screenshot_16.png.7df0a3db4decd91c9f9b966a8eb9c48a.png

    Things didn't go too well - we finished 3rd in a quite tight group, which meant we'd drop to the Copa Sudamericana.

    Screenshot_15.png.894c9a6fbc4c8ed707dbe9789c4b8cf1.png

    Here we played Brazil's Paranaense and were out in the first knockout round already.

    Looking Ahead

    We didn't win the Apertura and Intermedio, but FM don't count them as actual titles - the only title that counts is the league championship here. And by lucky coincidence, we also won the Supercopa already. This means, we are done with Uruguay after year 1! I'll see what the winter break has in stocks, but will be looking to join a promising side in a different country next.

  4. Last week I discovered a new thing over at Twitter: "All About the Narrative" is a very friendly person that asks you a few questions and then hits you up with an FM save narrative that seems to suit your needs.

    Here's what I got when I asked for a long-term journeyman save outside Europe:

    Screenshot_335.png.f9625084961834fb9187eb03d8a21c59.png

    If you're following the FM Community for a while, you will soon notice that this sounds like a South American and more relaxed version of Dr Benjy's Glory Hunter saves, hence the title.

    So, off we are to South America. I dabbled in Argentina, Chile, and Peru in previous FMs, but this one needs some preparation. Luckily, FMGrasshopper and rocksendfm gave us an updated League Guide and Club Guide for FM22 and that should set us up.

    I'm loading the six standard nations that FM gives us plus the top leagues in Europe (speculating on transfer revenue) and Mexico (speculating on good players).

    Screenshot_350.png.36651c333c0fcd13597f1fbc5f216553.png

    As the starting post didn't pose restrictions, I decided to not make my life harder than necessary. I'm starting as Ignacio Tortuga, Uruguayan, 31 years old and former professional footballer at the national level.

    Screenshot_1.png.064fdbc1c644a80b6150bb592dcebcf0.png

    This also determines our starting nation. We will start collecting titles in Uruguay. I could have just gone for Nacional or Penarol to have a head start, but instead I decided to pick another team from the top half of the Uruguayan first division:

    Screenshot_2.png.5c493e8c94996bc37425ab085cf187b1.png

    The club is predicted to finish 5th in the 16 team Uruguayan top division. The board want a top half finish in our first season and later aim to qualify for the Copa Libertadores, which would require us to finish in the top 4.

    Vamos!

  5. I have a German player that has the letter 'ß' in his name. When he scores a goal, the in-game overlay displays his name as the scorer in all-caps. Problem: there is no capital version of that letter in German and thus, the letter gets transcribed into 'SS' (== 2 letters). Funny enough, the in-game overlay then drops the last character of the player's name from the UI.

    So the player's name (Keßler) gets transcribed as KESSLE rather than KESSLER. Likely a mixup in the calculation of the number of letters to render?

    See attached screenshot where the 3D engine renders his name correctly, whereas the overlay has dropped the last letter.

    Screenshot_5.png

  6. I sometimes attend matches of my former teams and find it surprising that after that I am seeing press speculations about my interest in certain players whereas "He came to watch his former team" would be a more obvious explanation. It would be fun to see more variety in those speculations (likely also applies to the respective interview questions I'm sometimes getting).

    We have right now:

    * interest in player(s)

    * national team manager watching players

    * interest in job (??)

    * watching favourite team

    * press have no idea

    Other stories off the top of my head:

    * watching former team

    * watching a big game (cup final, international knockout...)

    * watching your son (?)

    * a night out with friends (if the match takes place close by to your actual team's city)

    * watching team I'm soon going to take over (i.e. already signed a contract for next season)

  7. Right now, the finances around competitions (TV money for leagues, prize money for cups) are statically defined. In the real world, these are adjusted every couple of years through TV deals or because a league suddenly has more money and decides to let the clubs participate. I would like to see similar effects in FM.

    Speficially, when playing a 'smaller' country and being successful there (by winning international cups, developing good youth players, ...), I would like to see this country's clubs benefit from the influx of money into the country through higher competition bonuses / TV money.

  8. The reasoning behind the CWB(a) was that the AM players both would cut inside and thus I'd want attackers on the flanks.  Would CWB(s) make sense or rather a WB(S) to drop them even further?

    And what about having both wing backs on support? Would it be beneficial to leave one on attack to make the tactic open to different scoring pathways?

    I'm aware the BWM is not sticking to a position, I was hoping for the AP to do so. Will try to switch for a DLP(s).

    As for conceding, I mostly concede from the occasional long shot either from within play or after corners. I did get a few balls over the defense as well, but not at a concerning rate (yet).

  9. I'm currently managing Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premiership. We are one of the league's top teams, so I'm trying to establish a possession-based tactic. After some tinkering I have right now settled for a 4-1-4-1DM-Wide tactic (see attachment).

    Team instructions

    * Work into box to slow down play and have more players in the area once we shoot

    * Wide because most opposition are trying to park the bus, we're trying to pull them apart

    * Distribute to CB/FB to create play from the back

    * Higher LoE/LoD to push into opponent's half

    * Urgent pressing to recover possession soon enough

    * Offside trap because High LoD

    Player Instructions are default, except

    * Take fewer risks for the two CD

    * Ckise down more for the CWBs

    This works more or less -- somewhere in the middle of the season we are 3rd in the league (expected 4th), but I feel we are struggling with scoring too much. One example match, we had 44 shots, 4 CCCs and still only managed to score 2. I had a couple of really weird 0-0 draws where we were similarly overloading the opposition with shots, but just did not score. Any thoughts on the tactic in general and my scoring problem in particular would be appreciated.

    Screenshot_9.png

    Screenshot_10.png

  10. I'm a big user of customized views everywhere in FM and I also use the print screen option to process some of the data externally. (I admit I'm one of those spreadsheet managers...)

    Unfortunately, none of this is possible in Stadia, even when playing on PC. I guess this is due to Stadia limitations, but I'd love to get those options once Stadia provides some means of doing so.

  11. I also have to ask multiple times at the low levels. Once you made sure the money comes rolling, their next argument is going to be that they don't want to improve your skills because then bigger clubs would draw you away. I successfully convinced the board in this case by appealing to their lack of ambition. ;)
