Dave is here
"Fighting football, not serenity football, that is what I like. What we call in German "English" - rainy day, heavy pitch, 5-5, everybody is dirty in the face and goes home and cannot play for the next four weeks." "My game system is called ‘fun football’." Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to what is going to be an absolute circus of a thread. This isn't a guide, this isn't a thread trying to build a super tactic to win every match(Although we might by complete accident), this is a journey into creating the ultimate dortmund style of play. There may be tactical fudge-ups, some absolutely ludicrous ideas, some hammerings from terrible opponents and of course, crazy football. I am by no means an expert. Infact, I consider myself to be an absolute novice and you may or may not agree with the things I do. As I progress through this career, I'll be analyzing matches to see what was effective, what wasn't and what was downright stupid of me and probably, how long before I get sacked. So fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride. I know I won't. Remember guys, if you find yourself struggling just ask yourself, "What would klopp do?" The main principles of klopps philosophy at Dortmund: Press the opposition at all times Run opponents into the ground Direct football no meaningless passes So our first attempt at the tactic: PI's Gk(D): Distribute to defenders WBL(S): Cross from Byline, close down more BPD(STOP): Mark tighter, dribble more, close down more, get further foward DCR: ©: Close down more WBR(S): Cross from byline, close down more B2B(S): Close down more CM(D): No instructions LW(A): Get further forward, roam from position AP(S): Roam from position, close down more DW(D): Sit narrower, run wide with ball DF(S)-No half price sales here!: No instructions IMPORTANT: I forgot to add roam position in our first match to the LW The First match The Result Not the start I'd hoped for, Sacked in the morning! I'm getting sacked in the morning! Key points: THE PROS I ended up having far more possession than i was expecting Passing was quite accurate Tackling was excellent THE CONS Gave up far too many clear cut chances Weren't clinical enough Bayern's outfield players ran a total of 118.3 kilometeres compared to our 114.8 Understanding why we lost Average positions The first thing i notice from the heat map is an incredible gap between our LW and our LWB compared to our right hand side. Both of bayerns goals were created from here. The second point was just how deep our DF was How to find the solutions? Well, after crying myself to sleep at the result, I woke up the next day thinking, Dave, we're on very fluid. Won't a fb(s) pretty much do the same job as a wb(s) but be more responsible defensively? So after this groundbreaking idea, i decided this would help my defensive vulnerablities. Then, while my brain was in super-logic mode I also thought to myself, there's absolutely no need for a DF, we're already closing down at all times anyway! So after being quite pleased with myself at this remarkable discovery, I opted for a CF(A).The second match The Result Hooray! We won! Key points THE PROS Absolute tackling to perfection Passing was still accurate THE CONS Opposition's outfield ran a total of 112.3 kilometres compared to our 111.4 Average positions So looking at the left, we can see the gap has decreased slightly. Interestlingy, the LB is actually higher up than what he was as WBL. We also see our CF is now operating higher than before. The pressing in action An example of how pressing leads to a goal Ah, lovely jubbly. The third match The result Although we won, there were still some things i wasn't happy with. My players were simply rushing shots. So I had to ask myself a few questions: Is overload causing the rushed shots? Would changing mentality help? If I did change mentality, how would i keep the same blistering pace of my attacks? What started out as a few simple questions soon turned into me having a full-scale argument with myself. Eventually, I decided on this: The fourth match The result Average positions
