Summary

The Bandits were simply awesome this season, winning League One with a squad almost as strong as the Sheriffs, who reside on division above, and made the playoffs this season. That suggests that with only a few additions, the Bandits could be at a similar level. With the top five players in League One, they already have half a side capable of the step up.

As for the Sheriffs, it was another good season for them, but a penalty shoot out defeat in the playoffs hurt. Next season they will have their old rivals to contend with again.

The Sheriffs have now been bought out – their new chairman is Roland Brown, only 46 and with a CA of only 74. But his PA of 123 should mean he grows into the role. He is an interesting character – resources of only 1, although that shouldn't matter with their massive gate receipts, he has interference of 19 and patience of 20. How will this affect them?

The starlets continue to amaze, and are now picking up all the European and World honours for personal performance. Some are succeeding more than others, and it'll be interesting to see them all in the World Cup this summer.

With England having so many stars, they have to be favourites for the World Cup, but there is enough talent in other countries to threaten them.

But the real story is that the Bandits and the Sheriffs are, once again, back in the same league. Who will be first to the Premiership?

Dropping out:

22 (20). Everton – 7941 (-37)

29 (19). Werder Bremen – 7819 (-173)

Arsenal stay top, but the majors movers are Juventus, whose Champions League triumph takes them up to fourth, and Fiorentina, who won Serie A.

There is also a non-European appearance on the list – San Lorenzo of Argentina, which is a curious one – they haven't been threatening the top spots in their league, and only made the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana. Real Zaragoza also return to the list.

World View - Ones to watch

Your annual guide to the stars of tomorrow:

Bruno Freitas (Braga/Portugal, 17, DC, 98/193) is a young centre back plying his trade in Portugal. The centre back is already at a relatively big club, and has big potential.

Previous tips

Loic Pelletier (Troyes/France, 21, MC, 151/197) makes massive gains, rising 22 CA points, and has broken into the Troyes first team now, although he still isn't playing particularly well.

Steve Tucker (Rangers/England, 21, D RC, 130/197) picks up another seven CA points, and is playing only the occasional game for Rangers.

Tamer Ozdemir (Basel/Turkey, 20, DC, 133-197) gains thirteen points, and makes the move from Konyaspor to Basel on a free transfer. He has yet to make any sort of impact at his new club.

Vladimir (America (RN)/Brazil, 17, ST, 130-198) is making excellent gains, picking up 19 CA points to be at a very high level for a 17 year old. Having wanted to leave his relegated club, he ended up staying, although after failing to get into their side and with the club not gaining promotion, he is moving to Bolivian side The Strongest in September.

Zdenek Kuban (Sparta Prague/Czech Rep, 19, ST, 120-199) gains eleven CA points, but after playing a fair part of last season, he makes only two substitute appearances this time. He must bide his time, as he has enormous potential.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona/Argentina, 26, AM RLC, 194/195) doesn't have as strong a season as he did last year, but remains joint top of this list, and will be eagerly anticipating the World Cup.

Lionel Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo (Man United/Portugal, 29, AM RL, 194/195) remains at his peak for yet another season, topping this list, and having another excellent season for United. Now on 99 caps, the first match of the summer's World Cup should mark his century.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid/Spain, 33, GK, 191/192) maintains his CA once again, and concedes at less than a goal every other game. He will be hard to beat this summer.

Iker Casillas

Kaka (AC Milan/Brazil, 32, AM C, 190/195) is probably spending his final year on the list, after dropping four CA points, but he is still a force to be reckoned with, and will be looking to go out with a bang this summer.

The final section, National Coefficients, will follow, but they get updated on July 1, whereas I do all updates on May 31. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem, but there is a World Cup going on this summer, so I'm writing that up day by day (nearly at July 1, so you'll get it soon).

World Cup preview on the way.

World Cup 2014 - Preview

Hosts: Brazil

Holders: Italy

Group A: Chile, Ghana, Italy, Poland

Group B: Algeria, Australia, Czech Rep, England

Group C: Brazil, Croatia, Oman, USA

Group D: Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia, South Korea

Group E: Cameroon, Iran, Scotland, Spain

Group F: Canada, France, Peru, Portugal

Group G: Colombia, Holland, Mexico, Nigeria

Group H: Ecuador, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia

The group that sticks out is Group G, where Holland, complete with poor ranking as a result of failing to qualify for the European Championships last time, have a tough draw. France and Portugal are paired together, while England and Spain should be confident. Scotland might get through their group.

Notable absentees:

Egypt (drawn in the same group as Ivory Coast)

Japan (Oman shocked them in qualifying)

Sweden (4th in England's qualifying group, behind Israel and N. Ireland, who also both failed to qualify)

Denmark (lost out on winning France's group on goal difference after drawing with Hungary in the final game, then lost playoff to Serbia)

Highest ranked absentee: Denmark (17th)

Starlets:

Goalkeeper 1 (Argentina)

Goalkeeper 2 (Brazil)

Left Back 1 (England)

Right Back 1 (England)

Right Back 2 (France)

Centre Back 1 (Germany)

Centre Back 2 (Holland)

Centre Back 3 (Italy)

Centre Back 4 (England)

Left Mid 1 (England)

Left Mid 2 (England)

Idiot Goalkeeper (England)

World stars

Messi (Argentina)

Ronaldo (Portugal)

Casillas (Spain)

Kaka (Brazil)

England's Left Back 2 is the only starlet not going to the World Cup – out of 22 he must be feeling quite lonely. England have chosen Left Back 1 to be their only player in that position, which is a risk.

Idiot Goalkeeper makes it as the two keeping starlets are playing for Argentina and Brazil, and all four world stars are present. It should be a good one, especially with Brazil hosting the tournament again.

Fantastic update, shame we didn't win in the playoffs but hopefully we can bring in some stars in the summer and go up, could see both go up next year imo

Kip have you ever taken a poll on which club is the better supported of the two? There seem to be more sheriff fans reading these updates than those of the mighty Bandits.

I predict for next year the Bandits to go up at the first time of asking bringing in a couple of transfers in to strengthen the already talanted squad that won league one. The Sheriffs will not be far behind them but i think that they will be spending one more year in the Championship after losing in the play-offs for the second year running.

Up the Bandits!!!!!

A few months ago I did a count through of those declared for either side, it was relatively well balanced through the Bandits had clear lead. But that was a while ago and not exactly clear cut. Anyway, that was rivetting stuff, especially the drama surrounding the Sheriffs reaching the playoffs. Just as well you reposted the Aug-Dec updates as I'd remembered little due to the gap. Anyway now its a Bandits-Sheriffs race to the premiership, even if its uncertain if either will do it next time. The Sheriffs have a seasons experience headstart and but the bandits have a much stronger starting-in-the-championship squad and have finally learned to use their money properly so the already good players may be augmented by yet more. Its anyone's contest.

Englan to win it surely. Great upate as ever Kip, almost gutted that I've read the season update as now I have to wait for my fix again. Do enjoy World Cup/European Champ years tho as the offer a little respite to the craving haha

England to lose on penalties in any stage after cruising through their group with 9 points, and most probably without conceding a single goal.

Up the Bandits, more settled & talented squad for Championship. A little bit of make up here and there and we are good to go

Holy crap, Idiots actually improving? Where's this world going to? :)

I am loving the Bandits steamroller, I hope they can keep it up. And the monstrous performances of the attacking starlets are a joy to behold.

As for predictions:

Group A: Chile, Ghana, Italy, Poland - Italy to dominate, Ghana to edge out Poland.

Group B: Algeria, Australia, Czech Rep, England - England to destroy everyone, Czech Rep to cruise past the other two.

Group C: Brazil, Croatia, Oman, USA - Brazil will do the same in this group, and Croatia should be able to hold off USA.

Group D: Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia, South Korea - Argentina have it easy, and Serbia should triumph over South Korea.

Group E: Cameroon, Iran, Scotland, Spain - Spain's combination of starlets and stars means they wil massacre the others, and Scotland may be able to fly on the wings of Rangers to outperform the others.

Group F: Canada, France, Peru, Portugal - Portugal should be able to hold off France for the win here.

Group G: Colombia, Holland, Mexico, Nigeria - Holland have it tough, I'm guessing Nigeria might manage to win this group. But really, this one's anyone's guess.

Group H: Ecuador, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia - Germany to sail past the others, while Russia manage to just edge out Ecuador for the second place.

And of course, England to lose to Italy on penalties in the semis. :p

There does seem to be a decent balance - personally, I'm on the side of the Bandits every time, and would love nothing better than a Bandits shoot out win in the playoff final next season...

Dropping out:

21 (20). Croatia – 15.125 (+2.375)

26 (19). Cyprus – 11.000 (-7.500)

As with real life, the domination of a few leagues means the gaps are getting wider – the top few countries continue to make gains, while at the bottom the smaller nations are seeing their coefficients ebbed away.

England finally make it to the top after a series of seasons of their sides reaching the major finals – last season they had three Champions League semi finalists. Spain miss out despite gaining a little, while Juventus' Champions League victory isn't enough for Italy to make strides.

A little further down, Portugal take Holland's third Champions League spot, thanks to Sporting's run to the Champions League knockout stage, and Benfica's semi final in the UEFA Cup.

At the bottom, Sweden arrive on the list thanks to Helsingborg's appearance in the Champions League group stage.

Wow, Bandits. Fair season.

Think this is the first FM long term sim I've seen where the top doesn't change fairly soon after the sim starting...I wonder whether that's due to Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool winning the starlet race, though. Man Utd are 4th with no former Bandits.

Norway are still ****, I see...

World Cup 2014 – Report

Group A:

With Italy clear favourites to go through, each of Chile, Ghana and Poland fancied their chances of pinching second place. Ghana started well, taking an early lead against Chile, but the South Americans came back to win 2-1. In the other game, Italy cruised to a 3-1 win over Poland, although they had to do it without Centre Back 3, who twisted his knee and would miss the early stages.

Chile consolidated their good start with a 0-0 draw with Italy in the next game, Centre Back 3 making his return, while Ghana stormed back to beat Poland 3-1. The Poles ended the game with nine men after two late red cards as they crashed out of the competition.

With Ghana and Italy facing each other, Chile knew a point against Poland would see them through, while Ghana needed to beat Italy to leapfrog them and qualify.

Despite taking the lead twice, Chile ended up having to hold on to a 2-2 draw with Poland, who at least exited the competition with some pride, and in the other game, Ghana dominated, but a single Gilardino goal was enough for Italy to win 1-0 and finish top of the group.

Group B:

England looked to have a kind draw in Group B, and they certainly started in style, with a 4-1 win over an Algerian side who ended with ten men, Striker 2 scoring a hattrick and Left Back 1 adding a penalty. In the other game, Tim Cahill's red card hindered Australia, and they crashed to a 2-0 defeat to the Czech Rep.

The favourites were cruising, and the second round of matches saw much of the same – goals from Striker 3, Left Mid 2 and Centre Mid 1 gave England a 3-0 win over Australia, who again had a man sent off, while Czech Rep sauntered to a 2-0 win over Algeria. With a game to play, the qualifiers had already been decided.

All that was left to play for was top spot, and after Left Mid 1 and Centre Back 4 put England into a 2-0 lead, there seemed no way back for Czech Rep. But England's defence is shaky with Idiot Goalkeeper running the show, and the Czechs came back to 2-2 in the second half. Eventually, a Centre Back 4 penalty settled the match, but England have reason to be concerned at the back.

In the other game, a late equaliser denied Australia a win against Algeria, the match ending 1-1, both sides going home with one point.

Group C:

The hosts Brazil had been given a relatively kind draw, and certainly had a friendly opening game, a 2-0 win over Oman. Goalkeeper 2 had little to do, but Kaka went off with a bruised rib, which was fortunately not too serious. In the other game, Croatia won the battle of the sides chasing a likely second place, beating USA 2-0.

The group was decided in the second round of games – Brazil beat USA 2-0 with goals from Anderson and Alex, Kaka given a rest, and Croatia cruised past Oman 3-0, Olic scoring a hattrick to send his country through.

The Brazil-Croatia showdown was just for top spot, but with Brazil resting key players, such as Goalkeeper 2 and Kaka, Croatia pinched the win with a late Eduardo goal. At the other end of the group, Grella scored the only goal of the game as USA won against Oman.

Group D:

Group D is tough – Argentina have plenty of talent, Serbia qualified well, while the Ivory Coast are always dangerous. South Korea were the designated whipping boys.

But it didn't start like that, South Korea ending Goalkeeper 1's hopes of an early clean sheet, scoring past Argentina after only three minutes, but it was a flash in the pan, and Argentina eventually ran out 4-1 winners, Tevez scoring twice. An entertaining match elsewhere in the group saw the Ivory Coast run out 3-1 winners over Serbia, Yaya Toure scoring twice.

South Korea got off the mark in their next game, securing a point with a 0-0 draw with Ivory Coast, while Argentina continued their relentless march, Tevez and Messi scoring in a 2-0 win over Serbia, knocking them out.

With Argentina through and Serbia out, there was only one place to play for, and South Korea needed to beat Serbia, and hope for Argentina to beat Ivory Coast. At the same time, the Koreans needed a five goal swing in goal difference.

With the Ivory Coast getting a man sent off early, a big defeat looked possible, but already through, Argentina weren't in the mood to exert themselves, and scored only one goal, through Cambiasso. Kalou even had the chance to pinch a draw from the spot, but Goalkeeper 1 saved it.

That left South Korea needed to hammer Serbia by four goals, but they only managed a 1-0 victory, and crashed out on goal difference.

Group E:

Spain have a whole host of star players, so it was no surprise to see them run out comfortable 3-0 winners over Iran, Striker 1 scoring the third. In the other game, Scotland threw everything they had at Cameroon, but the Africans resisted and held out for a 0-0 draw.

That gave Cameroon a great chance to qualify, but another 0-0 draw with Iran, a dull match in which only one shot made either keeper make a save, left them needing a result against Spain to have a chance. Meanwhile, Scotland were managing the shock of the tournament so far – Fletcher put them ahead, only for Torres to equaliser, but with five minutes left, Miguel Torres conceded a penalty, getting his second yellow card in the process, and up stepped John Fleck, whose injury time goal against Spain two years ago saved Scotland in that group stage. Fleck buried it past Casillas, and Scotland won 2-1.

All that left Scotland top, with only the Iran game to come, while Spain needed a draw against Cameroon to guarantee progression.

Scotland had no trouble beating Iran 2-0 to win the group, so all eyes turned to Spain, to see if they would crash out in the early stages. But Cameroon lost a man early, Songo'o being sent off in the eighth minute, and Spain took full advantage, hammering them 5-0 to send out a real statement of intent. Striker 1 opened the scoring.

Group F:

The big match of the group came first – France v Portugal, but it ended up a damp squib, finishing 0-0, Mexes getting sent off for France. Despite Portugal's efforts, they couldn't find a winner. Both Peru and Canada knew they had to take advantage, and an injury time winner gave Peru a vital 2-1 win, giving them a chance of progression.

Peru now needed a result against France, but collapsed early on, and ended up losing 3-1, Right Back 2 playing well for the French. In the other game, Portugal had no problem dispatching Canada 2-0 to join France at the top.

With both sides one point ahead of Peru, both knew a draw would send them through, but if Portugal lost to Peru, it would be curtains for them.

France had no problems beating Canada 3-0 to secure their place in the second round, but Portugal were having much more trouble in the other game, throwing the kitchen sink at Peru without scoring. Farfan scored for Peru in the first half, and a real shock was on the cards. It seemed it was only a matter of time until Portugal got their equaliser, but it kept ticking away, and with five minutes left Baylon secured the win for Peru. Despite being outshot 20-3, they won 2-0 and sent Portugal (with Centre Mid 2 and Ronaldo) home.

Group G:

The perennial group of death was wide open – Colombia, Holland, Mexico and Nigeria all fancied their chances. Mexico drew first blood, beating Colombia 2-1, Guardado and Marquez with the goals, and in the other game, Nigeria led Holland for a long time before Centre Back 2 popped up with a crucial equaliser for a 1-1 draw. He won man of the match for his sterling efforts.

Having impressed against Holland, Nigeria then beat Mexico 2-1, giving themselves a wonderful chance of progression. Holland found themselves needing a result against Colombia, and when Van Persie scored in the first half, things looked up. But Moreno equalised for Colombia, and despite the South Americans going down to ten men when Falcao was dismissed with half an hour remaining, Holland couldn't find the winner they needed. But in the 89th minute, Maduro finally broke Colombian resistance, and Holland sneaked a 2-1 victory.

All this left Nigeria and Holland with identical records at the top, with Mexico just one point behind them. Nigeria seemed to be confirming their place in the next round, going 2-0 up on Colombia, but they came back, equalising in the second minute of injury time for 2-2. But there was still time for a Nigerian winner in a thrilling game, and they secured their qualification 3-2.

That meant Holland just needed a draw against Mexico, and they got it despite being on the back foot most of the game. It ended goalless, but Holland are not looking convincing.

Group H:

Germany looked to have an easy group, their only real threat coming from Russia. But after Centre Back 1 helped them to a 1-0 win over the Russians, they looked to have navigated their difficult game. In the other tie, Ecuador beat Saudi Arabia 2-0.

Russia bounced back in style, hammering Saudi Arabia 4-0 in their next game, all the goals coming in the first half, while Germany survived a late revival by Ecuador to hang on to a 2-1 win, confirming their qualification.

With Germany already through, the only match to matter was Russia's tie with Ecuador – the winner would go through, Russia's better goal difference meaning the draw favoured them.

Eventually, Russia won 2-1 to go through, while Germany's 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia gave them the perfect record.

Summary

The biggest shock of the group stage was Portugal losing to Peru in the final game to go out. All the other big nations made it through. Croatia's Olic leads the scoring charts with four, while France's Obertan has managed the impressive feat of man of the match in all three games so far.

Your Thread has inspired to do the same exp. in Israel.

I started a team called Israel's legends containing 22 of Israel's hall of famers (to spice things up a little bit), gave them a CA of 120 & PA of 200.

Started a game with only the israeli leagues playable meanwhile to see that the DB is not corrupted or anything like that.

In their 1st season the team has won the israeli national league (2nd league in israel) with a record of 31 - 1 -1 in 33 games and a goal difference of 191 - 7 (that must be due to the fact that in this league the CA of good players is around 75-80) !!!

The team was running strong in league cup as well winning it , and reaching the semi final of Israeli cup just to get thrashed by a mediocre Hapoel Petach Tikva side 4-0 in the national stadium of Ramat -Gan.

Only 5 starlets had left the team in the January 2009 transfers window - they signed for premier league teams in Israel (3 went to Hapoel Tel Aviv, 1 to Maccabi Tel Aviv and 1 to Maccabi Petach Tikva).

In the summer though, the team saw a massive exodus with not less than 14 starlets leaving it - mostly for average European teams (including Lyon, Fiorentina, Ajax, Porto, Shakhtar) leaving the team with only 3 players from it's original starlets squad.

This grand exodus came thanks to an historical performance of the Israeli U19 squad in the Euro U19, winning it easily with a 3-0 win against the evil Germans at the final (5 starlets at the starting line up).

By now , 3 of the players had made it to the national team squad (all Israelis of course), 18 to the U21, and 1 fellow managed to get only to the juvenile squad of Israel.

The best CA starlet as for July 2009 is one of it's strikers who reached an amazing 159 (started at 120) in only one season!

They have all gotten better this year, with the worst of them reaching a CA of 131 (+11 which is not bad).

Keep u posted for the second season.

Don't often predict as I'm awful at it, but might as well start making a habit of it for extra interest

Italy v Czech Rep: Italy but maybe only by a goal given the Czechs gave England a scare

England v Chile: England superstars too good for most teams, certainly at Chile's level

Croatia v Ivory Coast: Croatia shouldn't have that much trouble here

Argentina v Brazil: so tight to call, maybe just Argentina, wouldn't be surprised if it needed extra time or pens

Scotland v Peru: Tempting to say Peru but they used up all their luck to make it this far so probably scotland

France v Spain: Another toughie, maybe France to just sneak it

Nigeria v Russia: Instincts just say Nigeria though I have a sneaking suspicion Russia will prove me wrong

Germany v Holland: I'm sure Holland will move up a few gears, so actually think they might get through, so I'll take a stab and go for them.

Remaining world stars

Messi (Argentina)

Casillas (Spain)

Kaka (Brazil)

Italy v Czech Rep

Italy dominated the early stages, and were well worth the 1-0 lead that was given to them by Montolivo. Shortly before half time, they moved into a position of great control, Rossi doubling their lead.

In the second half, Czech Rep tried to make a game of it, but despite Heidenreich's 89th minute consolation, they went out. Centre Back 3 played okay for Italy.

England v Chile

Favourites England peppered the Chilean goal in the first half, Left Mid 2 putting them into a half time lead, but in the second period, Fierro equalised for the South Americans. England threw everything they had at the goal, and finally got their reward in injury time, Striker 2 scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory. They still look unconvincing.

Croatia v Ivory Coast

Both these nations were surprise packages from the group stages, especially Croatia, who had topped Brazil's group. An even first half produced no goals, but in the second period Emerse Fae put the Africans into the lead on the hour. Croatia had lost the tournament's leading scorer, Olic, to injury early in the game, and were struggling to find the equaliser, but eventually, with twelve minutes left on the clock, Modric made it 1-1.

That was how it stayed going into injury time, but with extra time beckoning, Ivory Coast won a dubious penalty after a fair looking tackle, and Romaric stepped up to send them through 2-1.

Argentina v Brazil

Brazil brought their big guns back for the knockout stages, and after forcing Argentina back for the entire first half, one of them struck – Kaka finding the net past Goalkeeper 1 on the stroke of half time.

A minute into the second half, Hernanes made it two, and from there on, Argentina were a spent force, the few efforts they managed easily dealt with by Goalkeeper 2. Messi had a quiet game for Argentina.

Scotland v Peru

Peru had produced the shock of the group stage, knocking Portugal out, but Scotland's win over Spain was as impressive a feat. It was the Scots who drew first blood, Glen scoring in the eighth minute, before Manco equalised for Peru to make the score 1-1 at half time.

An open and entertaining match continued after the break, and with 25 minutes left, Manco scored again to put Peru into the lead, before O'Conner equaliser with eight minutes remaining. That was how it ended, and the tie went to extra time.

Scotland continued to press in the added half an hour, but were scuppered with eleven minutes left when Scott Brown picked up his second yellow card. Peru were unable to take advantage, and with nothing to separate them, penalties were inevitable.

The standard of penalties was exceptional, both sides scoring their first four kicks, but when Bonet stepped up to take Peru's final one, he struck the woodwork. Thomson had the chance to put Scotland through, and he converted confidently for a 5-4 win.

France v Spain

This was always likely to be feisty affair, but the 90 minutes lacked incident, except for Right Back 2 pulling up with a thigh strain, an injury that is likely to last two weeks, a massive blow to France.

The game itself was close, and once it had gone to extra time the drama began. In the first period, David Silva picked up a dead leg in a hard tackle, and with Spain already having used their three substitutes, they went down to ten men. In injury time at the end of the first period, Azpilicueta followed him off the pitch with fractured ribs as the game got more heated. Suddenly it was eleven against nine, with Spain right up against it.

Early in the second period, France got their chance to take advantage, being awarded a dubious penalty by Howard Webb. Bodmer strode up to take it, but Casillas palmed it away. But with Spain hanging on, France pushed forward more and more, and eventually Mexes put them through 1-0 with a goal four minutes from time.

Spain were out, hampered massively by injuries. It isn't to be their year.

Nigeria v Russia

Nigeria had impressed in the group stages, but were quickly up against it against Russia, who came flying out of the blocks. But after weathering the early storm, Mikel put Nigeria ahead, and Etuhu doubled the lead just minutes later, putting Russia in massive trouble.

Just after the half hour, Russia got back into the game, Pogrebnyak scoring to make it 2-1, but despite concerted pressure, they were unable to find an equaliser, and Nigeria went through.

Germany v Holland

The two sides had come into the knockout on opposing form – Germany had cruised through while Holland had to fight every inch. But when the locked horns, the match was extremely tight. Centre Back 1 was missing for Germany with a pulled hamstring, but Centre Back 2 was marshalling the Dutch defence, and guided them to a 0-0 draw.

In extra time, the deadlock was finally broken, Maduro scoring early in the first period to put Holland ahead, but just after the break, substitute Ballack equalised. Ballack then went from hero to villain, picking up his second yellow card, but Holland were unable to take advantage and the tie went to penalties.

The standard of spot kicks was outstanding, both sides scoring all five of their regular kicks, and Centre Back 2 being successful with the final one of those. In the first round of sudden death, Keibling scored for Germany, but Drenthe held his nerve to level it up for the Dutch.

With kick seven, Germany finally faltered, Stekelenburg saving Boateng's kick, before de Jong smashed home the winning penalty, putting Holland through 7-6.

No, I don't believe it. Webb doesn't give dubious penalties. Oh, wait... he does. He just doesn't give stonewall penalties.

Well, pretty close and competitive stuff. Managed to get a few non-obvious predictions right as well. Realized in bed last night that Brazil was hosting and therefore easily overcame any advantage I thought Argentina would have, but it was so easy in the end that I'd have been wrong anyway.
