How long does a team take to gel?

Recommended Posts

Depends on how many new players you've got in the team, players adaptability, your style of football, the language spoken by the players, amongst other things.

Can take anything from a few successful matches to never.

As a general rule, assuming mostly British players settling into an English squad, all speaking English and of average adaptability .. you'll see marked improvement by the six-month mark, probably a bit earlier; I usually see my team start to "gel" around the end of November, start of December.

If you don't change the team, by the second season, they will feel infinitely more consistent.

... of course, that's assuming that things don't "go wrong", like players disliking each other, etc.

15 games is the number I have heard thrown around. So if you kept as much of the same 1st team together you would be looking at 3-4 months.

But there are many factors that can affect individual players such as language and preferred personnel, etc...

Does "gel" even exist in FM? How does it manifest, how do you see it?

I wonder if I start FM2015 and don't do any signings in the first summer transfer window, will my team be 100% gelled? :)

Team cohesion, it's called. There's 2 different parts of a team "gelling". First; the tactical familiarity. This will improve by playing matches, and by using "match tactics" as match preparation focus. 2nd; team cohesion. This will also improve by players training and playing together, by using "team cohesion" as team training focus, and by using "teamwork" as match prep focus.

Tactical familiarity it's possible to get to fully fluid levels ahead of the season start, but if it's your first season as a new manager of a team, it may take a month or two longer. It will depend on how new you as a manager are to the team, how many new players is in the group, and how many changes you make to the core of your tactics (those you have saved in your 3 allocated slots). If it's your first season, fully fluid familiarity may not be possible until a couple of months has passed.

Team cohesion; Keep checking your assistant's team talk feedback report. It will improve through different "levels", where "willing to die for eachother" is the max. It can take you many months to get to that level, sometimes more than a season, and it will increase or decrease dependent on a lot of things, like morale, happiness, winning (or losing), new players, languages and culture ... but when the assistant reports that the players has reached a "strong understanding", you are just 2 levels away from the max, and there's little point in having the team train with that as a focus any longer, whether it's team training focus or match prep focus. It will (hopefully) get there naturally through training and playing together, provided you don't constantly (excessively) make changes to your group of first team players. If it's your first season with a team, your starting level of cohesion will be rather low.

Both tactical familiarity and team cohesion will be easier to maintain after your first season, and the starting levels of both will be higher after the holidays, but of course dependent on the things already mentioned.

Your team is not fully "gelled" until both your tactical familiarity and your team cohesion has reached max levels, but once you have reached fluid in all tactical familiarity levels, and the assistant tells you the players have reached a "strong understanding", gelling is generally in a good state..

I have a question here - does team cohesion work for the squad as a whole or only for the players you are putting on the pitch. In other words, if you start the same 11 every game will cohesion improve faster than if you use a system of using a couple of rotation/back up players to rest your first-team members regularly?

Sadly the game has no concept of players knowing each other, doesn't matter what random players you select from your senior squad, they all magically use the global value for tactics/team cohesion.

There is some issues with reserves and U teams in the same club not being part of the senior squads tactics/team cohesion values, not sure what kind of issues it creates, to use 2-3 "reserve" players on the senior team, but moving players from other squads and it's like signing a new player.

I think its possible and takes some time, you need a young first team squad of 22/24 players, coaches all pulling the same way,one formation/tactics and players also having the"prefered moves"that you want to fit your tactics!

PS they end up like robots!

Where do I find this report? I checked the team talk feedback and could not find it.

Assistant's profile - Reports - Team talk feedback report ... I think; I'm not having the game up and running at the moment.
