FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

looking to get a new laptop to play fm 2021.

I play the matches in 2D so no need for good graphics and like to use a save with a large database with multiple leagues 10+ Of the top divisions with the English league being the only with the lower tier divisions. The laptop would be mainly for fm and very very rarely might be used for Netflix if travelling but very rare.

My budget would be 600 euro can stretch to 7 if needs be just wondering what would be the best available for this price range? Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for all your help guys.  I’ve played with the numbers and think I’m set on this for £680 (Decided to up the processor  to one with 12 threads).  Spot any obvious issues? Or am I good to go?

AMD Ryzen 3600 Six core CPU (3.6-4.2GHz)

16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM

4GB NVIDA GEFORCE GTX

1TB HDD

256GB PCle M.2 SSD (1900 MB/R 1100 MB/W)

That's a fine machine.  I have the Ryzen 5 3600 in my desktop and it does the job very nicely!  Nicely specced machine overall.

Are you based in Ireland?

If not, if you can please give me some examples of some major electronics retailers in your country where you could buy laptops and I'll see whats available for you that's worth buying.

Hi guys,

Currently on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) 2.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Looking to upgrade to an an actual gaming desktop pc to play FM - ideally in 3D and good quality graphics. Budget is around 600-800 - could possibly stretch to 1000.

Any advice gratefully received!

I'd go with this - slightly more than 600 euros, but well worth it compared to  the ones below that threshold, as the Ryzen 5 4500U is a very good processor.  It's a UK site, but they deliver to Ireland.

If FM is the only game you play, then this would do an excellent job: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-home-office/CTUKnGeDVr/

If you play other modern games, you may need to look at switching somethings around (or going over £800) to upgrade the graphics card.

Just FM, so this will do nicely. Thanks for the help!

I wouldn't recommend it.  Base clock speed below the 1.8GHz specifed by SI in the system requirements and if you want to play in 3D, you'd likely have to turn the settings right down.

Morning all,

My fiancee needs a new laptop for Christmas. She is a secondary school teacher and uses it fairly often for her work, nothing too big just spreadsheets etc.

I am also hoping to buy her one which I can play FM on the sly when she is not home!

Budget is £500.

I am assuming this one is no good? https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9230819?rec=PDP[8259626]:bottomSlider:P1:OHAT:alternative:9230819:Pa6ykMEczejz7a75zi2z

Welcome to the New Laptop Thread

We are all very excited for Football Manager 2021. And as such some things have changed this year for FM21.

This thread will also help if you play older versions of FM and still want a new computer. At 100 pages, it was felt technology has evolved and as such so does the advice that goes with it.

======================IMPORTANT======================

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
ANY OTHER INFO?

======================================================

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
Let's face it, nobody wants to waste hard earned cash.

The most expensive computer is not always the best for Football Manager!

It also helps if you’ve had a look and identified a computer which you like the look of. If you have, post a link to an online listing and we can let you know whether or not it would be appropriate to your needs.

NOTES:
Beware of high prices:
Some computers designed for portability are more expensive.
Beware of going to the most expensive first, different computers are built for different needs (like portability).

Expectations:
Generally speaking, the lower your budget the more likely it is that you will need to lower your expectations on how many leagues/divisions and database size you will have. And the lower the detail level for 3D matches.

We don't know:
We cannot test every computer/laptop, we only speak about the specs and if it's suitable for Football Manager and if it's within your budget. There is no way to know for certain how many Leagues/Divisions/Database size or how fast the game will progress. One user may be happy with the game progressing a week in 20 minutes, for others that may be too slow, so It's all subjective.

======================ANY OTHER INFO?======================

Do you want to watch Netflix?
Do you play other games?
Do you want to edit vidoes?
Listen to music, spotify?
Do you edit photos?
etc.?

List all the things you wish to do with your new computer/laptop.

=======================================================
CHOOSING A COMPUTER

3 main components are

1. CPU/APU

2. GPU

3. RAM

=======================================================

CPU/APU

Central Processing Unit (CPU) better known as the Processor
(it maybe referred to as the APU on some systems).

The most important consideration when looking at a new computer for FM.

This is effectively the brain of your PC. The better this is the smoother FM will run. It may also allow you to load more leagues/divisions and a larger database size.

How do I know if the processor is good?

FM21 requires minimum of 1.8ghz
(Previous versions require 2.2ghz)

A decent site to compare
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

CPU designs get  better every year, it is very possible that the game will run with processors clocked at lower speeds, however it is still best to look at CPU’s which meet and even better exceed the minimum stated speed requirement to minimise potential issues.

It's not all necessarily about the fastest clock speed. There are other factors in the processor that can be considered.
If in doubt, let us know and we can try to advise you the best we can.

================

GRAPHICS CARD

This is what allows the computer to display graphics.
There are two options when it comes to types of graphics card.

Integrated or Dedicated?

Integrated
is where the graphics processing capability is built into the CPU and is the less capable option.  FM will still happily run with integrated graphics, however, if playing using the 3D match engine, you may need to lower the settings for it to run at a smooth frame rate.

Note:
Some AMD processors (and others) have really good integrated graphics and may be able to run the 3D match engine at higher settings.

Dedicated
Where a computer has a dedicated graphics card entirely separate from the CPU. This will generally be needed for playing 3D matches at the highest settings, or if playing other games.

==============
RAM

RAM allows multiple tasks (programs) to run at once. The more RAM you have the more smoothly the computer operates when you have multiple programs open, like playing FM, watching Netflix, editing music/videos, etc.

Football Manager will also utilise the RAM and having more RAM allows some parts of FM to transit faster.

Guide:
8GB RAM is plenty for most people
16GB RAM is better but not necessarily essential
32gb RAM would only really be needed for heavy duty movie editing/animation etc.

NOTE:
Optane RAM or Optane Memory - some computers are listed on sites as having 4GB RAM and 32GB Optane RAM/Memory. Optane memory is temp storage that allows older hard drives to operate a little bit faster. More below.

=================
Hard Drive
There are mainly 3 types

HDD - Mechanical drive - cheaper (OPTANE RAM/MEMORY - sometimes you will see this referred in computer specs. Optane RAM/Memory allows this older style of drive to behave a bit more like an SSD drive.
SHD - a combination of HDD and SSD drives- in-between price
SSD - Flash-based device - faster and quieter - a bit more expensive
Note:
An SSD has little benefits for FM apart from faster loading and saving times but it will give a better computer performance. If the computer only has 128GB/256gb hard drive space then you may need extra storage. Best to get larger storage, or get a computer with both SSD and HDD and make sure the operating system is installed on the SSD and your other programmes are installed on your HDD.

Let us know if you need any help in comparing what you have found - or if we can find something that is better - and perhaps cheaper!

I really just wanted to give this thread plus opening post some Kudos - this is well explained for the layman!

From a technical standpoint (I'm a techie) - I *think* that CPU is likely to be the component most likely to result in better performance.  Following that RAM and finally Graphics card.  FM doesn't require even mid-range graphics cards (a GForce 9xxx series is much older now), so be aware that's a possible trade-off on cost.

I was surprised to see that SSD over HDD doesn't make that much of a difference *except for loading/saving games*.  Personally I have Windows, web browsers and Steam/FM on my SSD, as those get most use.  Other programs and most pictures/videos etc go on an HDD as I don't require fast read/write times for those.

I do wonder if SI games could give more insight into what's likely to boost speed - I saw a comment on this thread re HDD and SSD which led me to believe SSD is best for the save games, but actual installation can be on HDD.  More of this (i.e. RAM is required if using custom graphics - suggested on this thread

or CPU is required for more leagues (which I think's a fair assumption) would be beneficial to allow a trade-off to be made of CPU vs GFX vs RAM vs SSD as we'll all make those trade-offs to suit budget and what's important to us in-game.

Personally, I'd currently prioritize CPU, RAM, SSD, GFX in that order for FM.  But if you play anything else (I've picked up GTA V and looking at others) than actually GFX and SSD might be more important.

Currently, I'm in doubt between these two laptop setups:

  • Intel Core i7 10875H
  • RAM 32 GB (2 x 16 GB)
  • GeForce RTX 2070

or

  • Intel Core i9 10980HK
  • RAM 16 GB (2 x 8 GB)
  • GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER

The difference in price is about 400 euros. Both are more than capable for running 'heavy' database setups, it seems to me. But is it worth it to invest in the i9? And how notable will the difference between 16 and 32 GB RAM be?

For FM 32GB will make no difference, I don't really see it will be worth the extra 400 euros

There's not much difference the 10980HK edges it slightly.

Afternoon Good people,

I wonder if i could borrow your expertise - in the market for a new desktop, Budget can range from £800-£1200, maybe some more if it was justified, just concerned that seeing as i am only interested in using it for FM21, whether there is a point in which the law of diminishing returns kicks in!

Any Guidance would be greatly appreciated!

This is at the limit of my budget.  I accept its not going to be the quickest, and I'm not too fussed about graphic quality.  Am I likely to find anything better at this price point? Or similar at a cheaper price?

https://ao.com/product/x512daej265t-asus-laptop-silver-80137-251.aspx

I'm currently still on FM20 (may upgrade to FM21, but not necessarily): I tend to play only England as active leagues down to National North/South, I would like the option to extend this out a bit, but not essential.

You'd be correct - firstly, it's Windows 10 S.  With S mode on, you can only download apps from the Windows store, which means Steam and Epic, and by extension FM, are no-go's.  You could disable S mode, but with only 128GB on the SSD it's not going to leave much storage left over.  Plus, the CPU isn't great and it only has 4GB RAM, so whichever way you look at it, this is unlikely to offer enough for you.

This is the best one I can find within £500: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-15s-eq1510sa-15-6-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-silver-10207935-pdt.html

I don't think you'll get anything better for that price.  Excellent CPU, 16GB RAM and decent amount of storage.

Go for the Lenovo - it has the better graphics card.  Specs seem otherwise identical as far as I can see.

HI this forum is a godsend for old boys like me who know nothing about tech.

Looking for a new laptop as my one runs so so slow.

Forgive me for being so out of touch but love the game and want to get back into it by running 1 country (England prem to non league) and for it to run at a decent pace.

Ive upped my budget to around £600ish ideally want at least a 15inch screen and wouldn't use the laptop for anything much else.

are these anygood?

ACER Nitro 5 15.6" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5, GTX 1650, 256 GB SSD

MSI Bravo 15 15.6" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5, RX 5500M, 256 GB SSD,

What would you recommend believe me you are my saviour as its a minefield.

https://uk.pcmag.com/sound-cards/128456/intels-iris-xe-graphics-preview-is-real-gaming-power-in-reach-for-thin-and-light-laptops this suggests the new Intel Iris XE graphics are actually very good, however this is only one article, so I'd like to hear more feedback.

However, you can get this for less money and it has a stronger CPU and a dedicated graphics card, so I personally wouldn't recommend the Dell over this: https://www.box.co.uk/1L6E9EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-dk1005na_2958256.html

Hung off for months waiting for a good deal then missed the Lenovo EBuyer deal that’s now out of stock :seagull:

Do you reckon it’ll come by again or just go for the HP Pavilion on Box?

No idea which one you're talking about to be honest.

If you can let me know your budget and your intended use other than FM I can see what's around.

What would you recommend believe me you are my saviour as its a minefield.

chris

It's hard to say for sure, as the description doesn't give full details of the specs.  If you can provide the links to the machines you're looking at, that'd be really helpful :)

Hi

i am new so apologies In advance if this is not in the right location.

I have an old basic i5 laptop. I only want a few nations loaded would it be worth purchasing?

Pc specs

intel i5 2410 2.3 ghz (2nd gen) dual core

intel hd 3000 graphics

8 gb of ram

i appreciate it’s not a gaming laptop or new laptop with the ideal spec for gaming the laptop does me great for day to stuff and has time has passed on things have gotten better hardware: spec wise for running.

any feedback is greatly appreciated just opinions before possibly purchasing.

Cheers

Nathan

Unless it's super cheap and you have nothing else, I'd steer well clear of that.  A 2nd gen i5 is going to be really slow these days and the integrated graphics will frankly be terrible if you have any interest in playing in 3D.  Let me know your budget and I'll see if I can find anything worthwhile for you.

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read the message, I think you're asking if it's worth buying the game and you already have this laptop.  If I've now understood correctly, my suggestion would be to download the demo and see how you find it.
