It is still worrying and I might have to do something drastic.

Regular Season: October 2023

KTfwl1.jpg

October also has an International Break. There are Six matches including a match against Chelsea.

The first day of the month see us take on Nimes...

CK9STv.jpg

It is a good win but we should have scored more.

The Chelsea match is worrying because of our scoring form...

aKloq7.jpg

and the fact the have Haaland.

0RzA4z.jpg

We played them tough at Stamford Bridge and on another night we might have won...

Four days later we visited Marseilles...

nEj36g.jpg

It was a good match, both side had chances but mostly failed to convert.

t0AxMD.jpg

But the press is noticing....that means bad things are gonna happen.

We spent the International Break working on our Set pieces and Attacking tactics. Hopefully we can get off the schneide.

qGJoSH.jpg

The match against Celtic is like all the others we create chances but we find every way to miss...

We then had a home match against Strasbourg. It was a match we should win.

O2kLQg.jpg

Again we were ineffective in front of goal.

The trip to Lyon awaited us at the end of the month...

X29AYq.jpg

This match was awful....

Marco is our backup Goalkeeper. He came on a loan and did well. We had to overpay him salary wise, but he has been playing great in our Champions League losses.

I had to choose him because I know you are all getting tired of seeing Nael Jaby.

A lack of goals is clearly an ongoing issue, but by the same token you're very hard to score against. Personally, I think if you have a solid defensive base it's easier to find a solution in the attacking part of the side, just with minor adjustments and without removing your ability to defend well. Finding those tweaks (or players) is of course the hard part. But still very well placed in the league.

I agree with this. Often an easier fixed then plugging up the goals being conceded.

Seems like things are going well. Keep up the good work!

I think it is a player issue Grbic has forgotten how to score and Cardona who was brought into help hasn't really scored. I think the formation and roles are fine. The Tactics worked wonders for 3+ seasons.

That is why I said maybe needing to do something drastic.

I mean Grbic went from scoring 25 goals a season the first two seasons to 12 last season.... and Cardona scored like 8.

If I could get 10-15 out of each I would be happy.

Perhaps Grbic has hit his peak, he has done incredibly well for you. Agree, your tactic has been working very well, but sometimes teams find ways to combat us. A bit like in my game, one minor change made a difference, but then some months later, I needed to make another minor change (and I rarely make tactical changes unless forced to).

Having said that, perhaps a different player or two might be all that you need and the tactic could still work. Management dilemmas!

Sometimes you just need to upgrade the player. And move them on. He's served you well and can probably get a nice contract elsewhere.

This happens IRL as well, say a player like Danny Ings will have one amazing season and then go off the boil the next.

I had the same dilemma with Diallo in my Metz save, he was amazing for me but I bought in Loba and then had that newgen and Diallo had to go. It is hard sometimes as you get attached to certain players but I am always replacing players with younger players.

The board did decide to splash the cash and unasked for gave me $18.5M in the Transfer Budget. I am probably going to hold on to it though because all of my transfer targets have just signed with other teams or higher priced.

Also a rash of injuries has hit the team and it would be unfair to ship anyone off without playing with the best 11 to test the effects of some further tweaks.

But if the scoring problems persist I will be shopping for a new Striker in the summer.

Regular Season: December 2023

NtPaff.jpg

December has Six matches. Other than the Champions League versus Chelsea, They are against mid-table and lower teams. Thus should be winnable.

The month started with a trip to Lorraine and Metz. Bernard played the Backups because of the outside chance of a win against Chelsea.

u5rqwG.jpg

Grbic came on as a Sub and found the scoring touch...

Just Three days later we hosted Chelsea...

W71tIE.jpg

The match was closer than score suggests but our lack of good finishing killed us.

The preliminary report on our youth has come out...

LXY2x8.jpg

Look like we will have to buy some youth in the near future...

Five days after the Chelsea match we travelled to Nantes...

LlEGbG.jpg

It was a good match and Grbic scored again...maybe he has heard our discussion!

We draw a real minnow in the Coupe de France...

I4g013.jpg

On December 13th we hosted Rennes...a tough match...

y1Z9Ax.jpg

It was a game of defensive football with neither side giving an inch.

The media is catching on to our good form....

9jGYF4.jpg

Four days later we hosted a hot Montpellier team that was 12th...

n07yLk.jpg

They played a defensive gameplan but we were up to the task playing one of our most complete matches of the season.

The final match of the month was a trip to Reims in whose Cathedral French Kings were coronated.

It was a good showing by us and we won easily.

January was going to be an easy month with either three or four fixtures depending on the French Cup.

The first match was in the Coupe de France and was a trip to Beziers.

It was a glorified Preseason match we won 5-0.

The month began with Bernard making a signing for the future....

Bernard was happy with his current Right Backs but couldn't pass up getting this Liverpool product on a free transfer...

Tactical Interlude

I decided to show how my tactical thinking has evolved since the beginning of the save.

I decided to play a TikiTaka Style without knowing anything about it, The only thing I did was use as my base a formation I did know and understand. The 4-2-3-1 Wide.

This is the original plan...

eo6qVc.jpg

This is the most updated version.

MUo4iE.jpg

The biggest difference between the two is that I lengthened the passes and lowered the line of Engagement and Defense line.

I have also evolved from a Striker centered system to an IF and Striker centered system.

The Right winger is actually the most important player in the system in many ways.

He passes and crosses to the Striker and Inside forward after receiving the passes from the DLP.

But that is not the DLP's only option he can pass to the AMC the IF or the Left Back as well.

The Primary scorers are the IF and Striker but I expect contributions from the DLP, BBM, AP, and Winger.

This newest version has only been in place with it's best players for about a month.

but this is the state of TikiTaka versus Ligue1.

Team Stats

LCZNHw.jpg

as you can see Clermont dominates possession. also encouraging ins that we are the best at tackling which help's our possession numbers by taking the ball away from our opponents.

Player Stats

jVB79Z.jpg

I showed the most important part for my team. Nael Jaby our DLP is among the leaders in Key Passes.

Nice to see your tactical ideas and analysis. Defensively you are very consistent, but you have more ideas than that. Definitely a squad who you have playing to your strengths.

I am heading back towards what I know... very Mourinho like...The lack of scoring made me reexamine my defense. When Grbic was scoring for fun I didn't worry.

Also my defense is rather slow...about 12.5 pace. Thus the very high line was always a danger... and we would get caught. In the early days it didn't matter we scored more.

We were getting lots of goals from the Winger and Inverted Winger. In the early days it was Grbic and N'Diaye the Right Winger scoring goals.

@Jogo BonitoI would ask what you want to hear about my tactics? I wouldn't mind a few comments discussing them and yours as well. All in an effort to make us better managers.

Link to post

I agree about your high line not being suitable. I really wouldn't suggest you do anything with the defensive side of your team as it's working so well. Perhaps more pace, power and movement from the striker(s) may make the goals come more easily. A role that has worked well for me is target man, but the downside of that is that my other two squads get forced to have one when the strikers there are better as advanced or pressing forwards.

I've been going through a very heavy pre-season squad realignment, it's been hours and hours so far and we haven't even got to the first friendly yet. I've still only made the one first team signing (Fofana) but the other squads have been taking my attention.

I'm not the most tactical FM manager, but I do like to keep it tight in defence, and hard-working in midfield. I aim for pace and flair on the wings (supported by full backs getting forward) and then some pace, power and movement in attack. I'd probably favour a 442 because of wanting two strikers, but most wingers need to be playing high up the pitch in FM so I generally have to go with a 433 or 4231 to get the balance right.

Unusually for me, I've not really invested much in strikers at FC Lorient. I made some low key signings at the beginning and they're OK for 2nd/3rd choice striker. I do like to give young strikers an opportunity to grab a squad place so will always keep an eye on youngsters with a decent scoring ratio too. I currently have Tapsoba, Toure, Burban and Zehi in this category but still added another PSG youngster on the cheap this summer for the 2nd Team. Toure shouldn't be in the Under 19 squad after two seasons of goals, but he might have to wait another year there.

Regular Season: February 2024

IqbngC.jpg

February was going to be busy with 6-8 matches depending on the results of the Coupe de France. Most of the matches were winnable but the month opens with a tricky match at "Big Brother" ASSE!

sbxkNS.jpg

This match was a defensive masterclass by ASSE. We had chances but not many and the Set Pieces settled it. They scored on their chance while we missed.

Two days later the Backups played in the 11th round of the Coupe de France...

Xu9d2g.jpg

The match was rather routine our quality told.

On the 7th we hosted Bordeaux who were far down the table...

nB85cb.jpg

It was a routine victory made easier by their being reduced to 10 men.

Three days later we travelled to RC Lens for a tricky match...

5DjoLv.jpg

It was another one of those days...

Luckily we had a rematch a few days later in the French Cup Quarterfinals on Valentine's Day...for the right to lose to PSG.

CN3H64.jpg

We went out to a lead...they fought back and won...Good Luck against PSG!

Three days later we had a match against LOSC Lille...

i7B1Hj.jpg

We didn't play our best but our two main men came through for us!

A week later we played the last match of the month against Nimes and the newly appointed Claude Puel.

wYs1eN.jpg

The match was tough Nimes must have watched ASSE...because they tried a similar defensive system. We eventually broke it down with a Set Piece Winner. The biggest talking point was the length of extra time at end of game...5 minutes turned into 8minutes and they scored on a last second set piece.

League Table and Team Stats

Player of the Month

Our DLP is the engine of the team. His Key passes from midfield set up scoring chances. He also takes most of the Set Pieces unless the Specialist Fulgini is subbed into the squad.

Your tactic looks good. Updated version definitely looks better. I am a fan of the Winger on support as well and generally have that on one side and an IF on the other like you.

Why do you have dribble less on? I don't usually like that. Also, hold shape is counter intuitive to your other instructions like extremely urgent pressing. With 4 players in the AM/Striker strata you should probably use counter-press.

I'd have one of the two CMs on a defensive duty for sure, either DLP(d) or BWM(d). In my experience that makes a big difference to the defensive solidity. Also looking at your team I would explore upgrading the LB to someone good at being a CWB - that role combined with IF can be pretty lethal. If you go down that route then put the more defensively minded CM on the left side to compensate.

I always have dribble more, pass in to space, but with both flanks on attack rather than support.

I do also prefer one of a central midfield two to have defensive duty, but one thing his team does is defend very well so not sure if he needs it?

Sound suggestions on a more attacking left defender role paired with an inside forward or even inverted winger depending on the player skill-set. The defender pushing on might be balanced by having a midfielder with defend duty. Also agree making that more defensive role in midfield the left one of the pair, but for me that would depend on their strongest foot/ability to play left of the two.

You pay much more attention to tactics than me, in summary. Great analysis though

I started this save sort of Blind. I didn't know how to setup TikiTaka football. All those TI's come when you click TikiTaka Style in the Tactics creator.

I generally agree with you about the MC Strata, but when I started I tied the Green Circle in Role and Position I got this also because of the Higher line and pressure I found I didn't need as much cover for the CB's

The way I understand the way the tactic plays: the DLP-S is the Key cog. He sprays passes (more risky and more direct) passes to all those players in front of him. The BBM-S because of Roam from Position sort of does the Clean up in front of the CB's.

The Left and Right Backs are getting better (more offensive) but I only really ask them to launch crosses into the box.

The main Goal Scorers should be the Striker and the IF. All other are just gravy but all should have potential to score to help breakdown "Park the Bus" defenses the Higher line and pressing produces.

Yes dribble less is one of the pre-sets from Tiki Taka, you are right. The current combination seems to be working very well for you anyway.

EDIT - and yes I am also a sucker for the big green circles

I only used the IW because it was suggested when I opted for a TikiTaka 4-2-3-1 Wide and I had a suitable player (green circle) . The IW-S role did work well but my new player Cadorna wasn't enough of a goal threat so I changed the role.

I have about 3 different Corner Variants, but stick with the generic for Freekicks and long throws.

Me too. I rarely use inverted winger. For me, a proper winger (attack) and an inside forward (attack) are ideal.

Real football, I take more care of tactics. Or maybe I just know what I want in FM and rarely adjust it. Maybe I pay more attention in the beginning than I think I do. Unusual for me to say this, but it's generally about the green rather than the orange!

I don't think you need to change much at all. You're very solid and hard to score against. Just maybe one or two subtle attacking changes but not ripping up the current plan.

I agree it is working. Let's not screw it up with our "tinkering". There was once a manager called the "Tinkerer" the one season he didn't tinker with his team, they shocked the world...Leicester 2016!

Regular Season: March 2024

8ooKHh.jpg

March is a slow month with only four fixtures due to the lack of Knockout Round Football. It is an incredibly important month because Three of the Four matches are against Top 5 teams. The other match could be tricky if they are overlooked.

The month starts with a visit from an old friend, Stanislaus Lincombe-20A. He was the standout member of our first youth intake and sold by the board.

aP95Dj.jpg

He is currently the OM Supersub Striker banging in goals...

The match was even on paper but the boys were really up for it and stifled OM's offensive play...

xS1iGe.jpg

Two wonderful headers from Cardona win the game.

Up next was a tricky trip to Strasbourg and the Capital of the EU.

I4xShO.jpg

Strasbourg gave us everything we didn't want and were only defeated by a scrappy goal by Right Winger Stehle.

That brings us to the match against OL. OL is the second best team in Ligue1 by far....this could be a hiding.

MkGYNT.jpg

Last minute injuries caused a lot of changes to the lineup and it showed, but the team fought hard but couldn't break down the OL defense without our Field Marshal Jaby.

Our final match of the month was on the 24th...we made the trip to the tiny Principality.

AS Monaco is stacked with well known names...

UuirmN.jpg

and we would need a miracle to get anything out of the fixture...

7gk5Pv.jpg

but the team had other ideas...

MaEho9.jpg

and won a tight affair that was dominated by physical play on both sides.

League Table and Team Stats

Rm1slW.jpg

The month wasn't over we had a youth intake and some other matters of interest.

Player of the Month

Lorenzo Rajot

hqenv9.jpg

Lorenzo has spent most of career with us...he isn't a bad player it is just there are better, but he did step up this month in place of Jaby and led us to a couple of wins.

Youth Intake

TCK0Gy.jpg

a garbage intake...I only selected the top 3...the AI only wanted us to give contract to the top one.

We went shopping for a new Striker...

This Guy:

02Q0sq.jpg

and his contract:

4cToiw.jpg

and he is cheaper than Grbic and any money we get for Grbic will offset the costs, because Grbic was a free transfer in 2019!

He is similar, but has better anticipation and off the ball attributes than Grbic, if slightly smaller.

and this popped into my Inbox!

Plus, I really don't find playing truly big teams that fun. The only big team I always play as (after some time as a Journeyman) is Liverpool.

I didn't announce it in the beginning, but this is a one team save. I will play it until I win the Champion's League or FM21 comes out.

Regular Season: April 2024

4c4k2k.jpg

April would be an easy month only four fixtures. Three of the four would be against Relegation teams...that means we would still have to do a professional job.

League Table and Team Stats

I decided to skip the results screens because the interesting stuff happened off the field.

Our Goalie enters the month ready to set a club record for shutouts...

The board is ecstatic over our completing a goal 5years early!

The team has bought a new Left Back...who will start out as a backup but should get some good playing time.

and for the domestic Treble...

That means there is a Euro Cup spot open.

But the biggest problem is this injury...

Which means we won't be able to sell him in the summer.

Who do you have your eye on to become the new striker?

This player is already signed as a replacement....

Regular Season: May 2024

PqUwe8.jpg

May was another month of playing lower table teams, We had to keep doing a professional job to finish the season well.

Final League Table and Team Stats

9UVwFg.jpg

We didn't have a dominating scorer or passer but Irvin Cardona led the line with 12 goals from the IF position on the left.

The lack of goals was remedied by Krapikas's 20 shutouts in goal.

Final Team Ratings

Player of the Year

Nael Jaby

The "Marshal of Clermont" lead the team on player of the match awards with 14 and assists with 8.

He will be getting a new contract to help deter interest from other teams.

The Rest of the Month...

our continued good play was rewarded. Even though there was a chance for Champion's League.

and after the 37th match we qualified for Champion's Cup!

and we broke a team record for consecutive wins!

The Board came up with quite the list of things it wants from me...

But It does have ambition...

Brilliant work by Bernard. Finishing 2nd is outstanding, and you're going back to Clermont too. Really the season could not have ended any better :applause:

The team ended with more points than my preseason number for CL Qualification which is 76 every season. Unfortunately catching PSG for Ligue1 might be impossible.
