Championship Manager '93

Recommended Posts

Mark Collis and Ferrah Orosco anyone?

Oh yes. Always the first players I tried to sign, whatever team I played. ;)

Was a fantastic game it it's day, as have been all the games since, but nothing beats the latest releases for me.

There was a near perfect balance of fun and detail with cm 03/04 in my opinion (having played since cm97/98). Time moves on and obviously it was bound to get more detailed, the problem for me is that a lot of the new detail/features is'nt implimented correctly in a manner that makes the game fun.

Too much of the media/press conferences and perhaps most importantly, team talks is boring, repetative and very confusing, so much so that many users tend to ignore these features altogether. Aside from the obvious improvements in match graphics, a lot of fm gamers are essentially playing cm 03/04 as they ignore most of the features introduced since then.

Stockport also had 2 great players I would always sign at the beginning Tony Dinning and some other guy.

Dindo was a legend. He came back to play for us a couple of years ago, but was a shadow of his former self. I'll never forget his winning penalty at Citeh.

Kenny Sansom was always an awesome one-season signing at left back. My Oldham side was unbeatable once I'd landed him and Ceri Hughes.

Of course, that game then led me on to CM Italia. I've still never, ever found as good a player as the magnificent Marco Piovanelli.

my all time favourite manager game was ultimate soccer manager - i just liked how the stadium designer worked and you could map out everything etc like burger stall locations and also newspaper reports came out about your team.

but now i love fm09 due to it's complex nature - it's much more satisfying once you've had 3-4 years of obscurity to winning your first trophy with the sense you've outwitted the AI

The first one i ever played was CM3 when i was about 5. I remember my brother used to visit and leave the game with me (as by that time the new one had come out). I been hooked ever since then and i don't think i've ever missed a version, my favorites were 00/01 and CM4, as that was actually the first one i ever won on. Some time si li9ke to go back and play the old ones with the knowledge of the best players lol.

On the Sol Campbell screenie, whats the insurance thing about??
You used to be able to insure your players in case they picked up injuries that required specialist surgery and rehabilitation.

True. It could also be used for the following

Another tip is to purchase players that are exactly 30 years of age and are worth plenty of cash (the reason they have to be 30 is as soon as they hit 31 their value decreases dramatically). Once the season comes to an end before you click on New Season make sure you transfer list the 30 year olds at the highest price you can and then make sure you have insured them. Then when you go to New Season they will retire and you will get their value to spend in the New Season. International players are the best ones to buy, especially if you can purchase them at the beginning of the season before they're called up. This way you can purchase them for a smaller price then when they get called up their value increases and therefore you can then list them and increase their value further. Make sure you insure them as they will retire and you will get nothing for them. This also frees up numbers from your squad for you to purchase other players, be warned tho as most of the time you will find that if you have a small squad then you'll see a lot of youngsters come through from the reserves.

When reminiscing these to bolts of nostalgia will always pop up.

Cambridge if I remember rightly?

Cambridge it was indeed. Two testers they were if a remember correctly

It was incredibly diffficult to buy from abroad, it wasn't until CM Italia that they really cracked it... that was a gem of a game!

Ah, the good old days, I also played the narrow 3-1-3-1-2 formation. I once played a game where I took over a team from each division (maximum of 4 players could play then), and after 4 seasons I was the top 4 in the Premier League from then on, I hate losing so I didn't want to use a 'normal formation'. Also 5-0-5 worked extremely well with long ball obviously. :D

Great memories. I started with CM1 Italia - which I played so much. Its problem was that eventualy the list would get clogged up, nobody would buy your players and you couldnt sack players. So you'd have a full list and hope for retiree's and regens.

I remember back then it was so easy to scout regens. Even CM2. Say, George Weah retired, next season, frst thing is you look at the Liberian players ans sure enoug, there would be a 17 year old with very similar stats. There was an icelandic player, DM too who I always got.

Won my first ever trophy in CM 93 - FA cup with W.B.A. ! Something I will probably never forget!

Also had loads of fun with the version that had sound commentary, I think it was CM2.

Must say though, that I agree with Heathxxx, the lsatest version is usually better than the ones before, and FM10 is bo different. I really enjoy FM2010, especially the new tactics creator and in-game shouts.

Torquay in the premiership! I was born 2 years before '93 came out so I didn't really have a chance, first ever one I played was CM 01/02 or CM 4(it was just called 4 but was season 02/03) and they were quite good but I enjoyed 03/04 the most.

I loved this game for the old Amiga 500! If anyone still plays it, please try the formation 0-0-10 or 2-0-8! Seriously! I don't know if they will work on a PC version or an updated version, but as a lower league side especially - on the Amiga 500 - it worked an absolute treat and I would murder teams!

Seeing those pictures takes me back, but I forgot how basic it was, it seemed so advanced at the time!

I think, generally, as the series has moved on the games have got better.

This years game is fantastic and will be even better when SI release that second patch which gets rid of the no tackling and too many long shots bugs!

(Please SI!!!!)

Cm93 - so many memories. Ade Akinbiyi, Jason Kaminsky, Christian Vieri, Christopher N'Wosu....great players. Wonder what ever happened to Kaminsky (he was at Forrest in the game) and N'Wosu. I do love the newer FM games but if you want it a bit more simpler then you should try the PSP versions. Hooked on the new PSP version right now.

It is a sad story as a Forest Fan and a CM93 fan I would of loved to see how Kaminsky would have progressed if his career at Forest hadn't been terminated

As someone said Mark Collis in CM1. Pure legend would sign from Cambridge to your team for about 3 seasons then always go to play in Italy :) Great days. I too miss the simplicity and one could play a whole season in an evening. Now it takes 24 hours game time at elast for me to play a season. But hey FM has developed and I can't ever imagine a day when I won't be playing this game. It is just bloody brilliant.

Back in the day I had a game going with a mate, I was Arsenal and he was Man United. Can't remember how many seasons we played but I used to win the league all the time with him 2nd. The European Cup was incredibly difficult to win, I got to the final twice in a row and lost both (the first one to Benfica which annoyed me greatly as IRL they knocked Arsenal out of the European Cup in the 91/92 season, and I was at the match as a 14 year old when they beat us 3-1 at Highbury).

Two amusing things that really stick in my mind from that save: my mate never playing Cantona ever, and fining him the maximum of (I think) 4 weeks wages all the time simply because he didn't like him. Also, my mate playing Crystal Palace at home, having 3 goals disallowed for offside then Palace scoring the winner in the last minute!

Wow.....some serious flashbacks looking at the screenshots in this thread. I'd pretty much forgotten how it used to look. I can't get over how dated they look today. It feels like only yesterday that I was rushing home from school with my best mate to play it every day. I might have to go and track down another copy for nostalgia's sake.

Wow!

Nostalgia!! :)

I started out with a different game than CM though for a while. Until CM 96/97 I think it was.

Premier Manager - Amiga

Premier_Manager_1.png

Incredible stadium builder!!! :D

41597-premier-manager-2-amiga-screenshot-improve-stadiums.gif

It was really cool though the way you HAD to pick a team from the Conference and work your way up the leagues.

I've tried a few Fifa Manager games over the years too. wow. So bad!

CM/FM was, and always will be the daddy

I remember a friend saying that 4-2-4 and long ball was the best formation. I never really knew much about tactics I just played 442 and always bought Bradley Allen who would score loads.

2-4-4 was the key for unbeaten success in CM93...

Julien Joachim....absolute legend (Flair 20!!)

You're all wrong for tactics.

I discovered that 0-0-5-5 was the best tactic. Unbeatable cheat for 93 and 93/94.

Yes, that's right, 0 defenders, 0 midfielders, 5 attacking midifelders and 5 strikers.

Wouldn't matter which players you had on the park or what style you played, pretty much guaranteed to outscore opposition.

It's basically breaking the game, but whatever. I discoverd it after getting annoyed at ALWAYS losing to teams playing 4-2-4 against my 4-4-2, so out of frustration I just threw everyone forward.

It's hilarious if anyone wants to give it a go.
