[FM20] It was Cambrogi in Wales, but now it's all about aggression in Wales, in England. Bellicosity, pugnacity and belligerence are all excellent words. But Welsh belligerence, in England now.

The team has only been in the league for 2 seasons and league only active since 33/34, i wasn't the dirtiest team for the 2 seasons i spent in the league below. Angers still came 2nd in 35-36 so maybe you can do well

Strangely my teams often pick up a lot of yellows but not that many reds

Scouting. Jul 2051

So far, (2 seasons), I have restricted myself to signing only Welsh players, (or Welsh 2nd Nationality), where the sum of their Aggression, Bravery, Determination & Workrate attributes is at least 40. There have been absolutely no exceptions, (other than products of our Academy).

While this limits me significantly, we have won a trophy in both seasons so far so it's certainly not been a complete disaster either. Being in the Championship should generate enough cash so that we can upgrade our facilities and I'm hopeful that with increased investment we can be more self-sufficient in terms of producing our own players. Money is still an issue at the moment and I'm trying to slowly build our finances so that if and when we get a Welsh starlet on our hands, the board don't decide to just accept some average offer from a big club. We need to think ahead and ensure that our finances support our ambitions ahead of schedule.

I've been considering allowing myself to sign U18 players from other Nations, but while writing this post, (that I was going to relax the rules), I have decided not to. As mentioned we have won 2 trophies already, and although we are certainly not going to win anything this season, I'm relatively hopeful of avoiding relegation, (even if that's a view that's not shared by the players and board). If I was going to relax my self-imposed transfer rules, then I think I should only do so when we have reached some sort of summit where I don't think I can move the save on within those restrictions. I certainly don't think we are at that stage now.

40 "nasty" points is quite a modest level that hasn't really caused me many problems at the moment, and although I would like to see the "nasty" level increased, I also don't want to limit myself to an unachievable degree.

There are players on the list below who fall short of the 40 point "nasty" level, (some by a narrow margin and some significantly", but I can't ignore them because all it takes is 1 "off-field event" or some natural development and things could easily change, (both ways).

733bd0488b60c1b35ab768b12e42ce25.png

Now that we are in the Championship I expect to be better able to flog players for a profit, but selling players at all is only sensible if I'm able to bring in players of a similar ability for less, and that's not always possible. Looking at how old some of the above reports are, I think I also need to push for a bigger scouting team. 18 year old Glyn Watkins for example has a "nasty" score of exactly 40, but the most recent report on him is 318 days old. That's no good at all. I need more regular reports so I need more scouts.

In terms of scouting instruction, this is what I have at the moment.

20086e49de7dfb5f324d2b5038f86054.png

I'm concentrating on Welsh competition and also the English aged Group competitions and the levels below the Championship. Swansea finished 9th in league 1 last season, (after being relegated the season before), so there are no Welsh clubs, (other than us), in the Championship or higher. Swansea have been significantly better at producing and developing young players over the last couple of decades and have better facilities than us. It's important that we keep an upper hand on them so that we can nick their players, but at the same time I want them to do well so that they produce good Welsh players to start off with. I would be happy to pay big money for a Swansea youngster who will stay with us for a long time.

I would be surprised to see Swansea stay in League 1 for too long. What is restricting them is that we have more season-ticket holders 39e9f490037bbccf35f2f86735d2e4eb.png, than they have seats, c2e62d44d40d67d81b82513a84bb7285.png, and I wasn't aware of this but they also don't own their stadium and pay £300,000 rent per year.

Actually, I have just realised that we also don't own our stadium, but only pay a "nominal" rent.

0414277c0fc33fd9209460a95e9361ed.png

What I have noticed about Swansea, (more than other clubs), is that they seem VERY good at scouting and signing players who have only been in the game for 1 season. Additionally, they are also significantly more likely to get a non-Welsh player through their intake than we are. Last season we got 16 completely Welsh players with no 2nd Nationalities for example. Swansea signed 7 Youth contracts last season.

I don't think there is a way to see their dirtiness attribute (except the editor), taking account of players history might help, are you looking at sportmanship or lack of?

Are Swansea the same every year with the intake or is that intake unusual. I would think Cardiff is more cosmopolitan due to its greater size and hence more likely to get through a range of nationalities.

Sportsmanship is hidden in the same way that Dirtiness is, so for the same reason I'm not going to be looking at it.

Swansea have better facilities, but have also been playing at a higher level than us for a few seasons.

Cardiff have spent the last 7 years in League 1, (and 8 of the last 10 years). Our scouting area only popped to "Europe" after we were promoted this season. (That might be significant and maybe we will see during the intake this season).

Sportsmanship is often referred to by scouts and coaches as well as directly (ie sporting or unsporting personality), i assume unsporting may cheat and possibly pick up yellows and reds as a result especially if combined with other personality traits. Not sure is temperament and controversy have an effect on the pitch.

Most of those nationalities for Swansea seem about i would expect for a club like them, I'm surprised Cardiff isn't similar.

Summer Transfer Window update

4b56222201a0edfac92f306c3f02d76b.png

(44a) Robinson (WAL) has a "nasty" score of 43, is a product of the Ton Pentre academy and after signing on a free is already worth £1.9M.

285cbfb751e551aed1e13ebadefc8f41.png

(42h) Alex Glassey (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 60 and is another product of the Ton Pentre Academy. He was signed to add depth, and to allow us to release some ageing non-Welsh players, but the main reason is that his "nasty" rating of 60 is brilliant.

53e374a2350de8466b9fbf2fb96afea7.png

Dave Davies (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 41 and was signed because we were really weak on the left hand side and were forced to play a Wide Midfielder there since my arrival. After signing on a free he is immediately worth £1.9M.

b51aed86a52da12d4796208977aa92da.png

Richards-Marsh (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 50 and as we have an ageing strike-force he was signed to plan for the future and offer depth.

abc08ac08bcff58cbb10e0040528246a.png

Danny Bellamy (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 54 and has been signed to provide some depth as we sell/release ageing players who don't suit our DNA.

969cfe8b1edbaad1205d1d379acd4711.png

(37a) McGoona (WAL) has been one of my favourite players in the save so far. Obviously another product of the Ton Pentre academy who I sold to continue his career as we out-grew him. His "nasty" rating is 43 and while on loan with us last season he scored 17 goals from 1(41) appearances, and the only reason he started a game was because I wasn't paying attention. My plan is to keep playing him from the bench again.

42a7f15f3d22ec7cfe52f8b83b4c13fa.png

Stuart Belton (WAL) was signed as a 2nd option on the left. His "nasty" rating is 39, but I can promise you that it was 40 when he arrived a month ago or I wouldn't have signed him. (Either that or I just can't count).

7c40b4a94b5c4aa443058dc8fc408544.png

Tristan Richards (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 51 and was another who was signed on a free to cover to offer some depth and reduce the ageing squad.

54a6dc66c83bb0325ebc52a2a364783a.png

James Mackay (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 49 and will probably be our starting right back.

974beb9998088f8cea6bbb613deaa59f.png

Dylan Cox (WAL) has a "nasty" rating of 45 and doesn't look great, but we're going to need some depth between now and when our golden generation eventually arrives and comes of age. (Yeah, I know I could be waiting awhile).

2cf23e661c356d21cb96b28b564de762.png

Hopkins (WAL) "curls" has only be signed on loan, but I think he is the signing that will almost single-handedly ensure that we aren't at the bottom of the table come the end of the season. He has a "nasty" rating of 51 and I plan on using his aggression and getting him launching himself into tackles as soon as possible, (if his bravery of 9 will allow it). With that in mind, I'm training his "aerial" ability to pop his bravery to 10.

That's a very good point with regards to "sportmanship" and I will have to pay more attention I think.

With regards to the Nationalities of the Cardiff intake, although I only have 2 seasons to go on, we've had nothing but 32 Welsh players and 3 Irish 2nd Nationalities. Whether that stays as is remains to be seen, but as mentioned previously, the fact that our scouting knowledge has popped to European gives me hope that it might not.

Pre-season. Who cares.

97ff175da29cc77e4f83aa600474cad2.png

Domestic games. I'm really happy with this. We are going to lose a lot of games this season but we have to make sure that especially at home, we win when we are able. 2 wins and 1 draw in the opening month is brilliant.

Goal-scoring keepers. We have a new GK in (44a) Robinson (WAL) this season and although he got off to a good start by scoring his 1st 2 penalties, he has since seen the next 2 saved.

Although he doesn't have any "negatives" on the happiness page, it's important to notice that his morale is "fair", (which is actually quite low).

Dec 2051.

Domestic games. We had a poor start to the month and I was getting a bit desperate when our GK (44a) Robinson (WAL) smashed in not 1 but 2 penalties against Charlton to give us a first win in quite a while, and then buoyed by our win, we followed it up with a win against top of the table win against Huddersfield

Jan 2052

Domestic games. An astonishing up-turn in form that has seen us win 6 consecutive league games, after winning only 1 of the previous 12 games. The key to our success? A poorer player will out-perform a fatigued better player. It's as simple as that. I have played Academy products who are nowhere near 1st team level, and they have raised their game. Burnley were top when we beat them, as were Huddersfield when we beat them last month.

Goal-scoring keepers. (44a) Robinson (WAL) scored his 6th successful penalty from 8 attempts, but in now injured and will be out for 2-5 weeks. I tried to sign a replacement before the transfer window closed, but couldn't get a deal done.

Feb 2052.

Domestic games. We keep pulling wins out of the bag when I'm sure we are going to get spanked. Have a look down below for some of the players who have started Championship games which we have won this season. They are WAY off the pace, but still..... I start them and we win.

Yellow cards. I have hopes of doubling the number of yellow cards collected by the 2nd place team come the end of the season. At the moment we're 24 cards short with 11 games still to play. It's going to be close but we will give it a damn good go. We have 3 players who have reached 10 cards for the season. Can they get to 15 before the end of the season I wonder?

It's not exactly a Golden Generation, but I'm pretty sure that (52a) Danny Dalton (WAL) * is the best player that I have produced at either club in this save.

When I was at Ton Pentre we had a player who was poached from our Academy who I'm sure had had a PA close to 155. What I wouldn't do for a striker to come through like this. The only think I would say is that his personality is Resolute, (so good Pro & Det), so it might not as easy to get Dalton to this sort of level, (but I will obviously be doing my best).

"Nasty" DNA

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the "Nasty" DNA shown by the intake this season.

Domestic games. We haven't drawn a game now for 23 games. I'm not really sure why.

Dalton look like a good prospect although his physicals are low he had good mental attributes. Spirited is a good personality i think, if his det goes up to 15 he may become resolute  or resilient. What is his media handling description.

Yeah. Quite happy with Dalton. We will see how he develops. The biggest issue with the save at the moment, (other than becoming a bit buggy), is the finances.

Domestic games. We've stuttered a little, but while we are 24 points clear of safety you won'y hear me complaining.

Goal-scoring keepers. 7 out of 10 penalties isn't great, but it's certainly not a disaster either. (44a) Robinson (WAL) also added a free-kick to finish the season on 8 goals for the season, but the most significant aspect of his development this season is that when we signed him on a free at the beginning of the season he was initially worth £1.9M, (which I was pretty happy about), he is now valued at £7M at 24 years old. I think I might have to consider selling him if I can source a reasonable replacement.

Discipline. I'm happy with 139 yellows, but frustrated that we didn't manage to break the 1,000 fouls in a season barrier. We've been a little disappointing in the red dept though and 1 red doesn't even get us on the 1st page of the team stats.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place really. Harry Grew (ENG) is a player that I inherited, but he's not Welsh so I really want to sell him, but at the same time we're hugely reliant on his goals and I don't have a replacement ready to step in and fill his shoes. I want to sell him, (both for the cash and because he isn't Welsh), but I just can't right now. I could do a LOT with that money.

(44a) Robinson (WAL) is Welsh, has a "nasty" rating of 41 and is a product of the Ton Pentre academy. I really don't want to sell him. Not least because once again, I don't have a replacement.

a3978bc1915eb365fc0a5e9b6988d9dc.png

There is no way I'm selling Adam Berry (WAL). He's been instrumental in our success this season and I'm sure will go from strength to strength in future seasons. The £400,000 I paid for him was a bargain!

Colin Edwards (ENG) is another player I inherited. He hasn't got Welsh as a 2nd Nationality so I really need to sell him, (both to get rid of him and for the cash), and I think I will as soon as I can generate some interest.

Oct & Nov 2052

October.  Our form has been a bit patchy, but certainly a damn sight better than it was at the start of the season. We're 6 points ahead of the relegation zone and if we can just keep a few clean sheets we will be laughing.

Scouting and new signing restrictions. Jan 2053

I've restricted myself so far to signing only Welsh players and more than that, Welsh players who score at least 40 on the "nasty" scale. The problem with that is when I do that, it significantly reduced the number of players available to me and we simply don't have the funds to buy them when they are young, and when they are older their wage demands are too high.

This is what my current scouting screen shows. it's showing just Welsh players that are interested in joining us and there aren't loads of options there.

e78fc1eeaaf56aecbfa4ce6bd391e40e.png

If I remove the "interested in signing option", then things do improve somewhat, but obviously these players are not interested in signing for us, (at this time).

Curtis Kane for example very much on my radar, but is recovering from a serious hip injury and Barnsley only want £66,000 for him. The problem is that his bravery took a hit when he was injured and his "nasty" rating is only 39. As soon as it pops to 40 I will be in for him.

56a5015afa11ac18d708792cc93b6e0a.png

I want to make things easier for me to sign young players, but I also don't want to make it too easy. I don't want to dilute the Welshness, or the "nasty"ness of the save too much. With that in mind I'm allowing myself to sign players who are aged 18 years and under, who are not Welsh but who do meet the "nasty" criteria.

My thinking here is not that we are going to become a side full of non-Welsh players, and more that we are going to identify, sign and sell-on these players to allow us to invest in the infrastructure at the club and be able to afford to sign and develop young Welsh players that are currently out of our reach.

The scout report suggested Braut (CRO) had 5.0 PA but he only showed as 4.0 when he signed. :( He's lacking in physicality, but we will see how he develops over the next few years.

1d710231790bb818e793e4e14aae4909.png

Edelmann (AUT) is joining at the end of the season. I love his "nasty" rating of 62 and it was this that 1st caught my eye. The scout report suggested 5.0 PA but that dropped to 4.5.

e3ac8844fa191ea8acca14baeaa505a3.png

I've got a habit of signing foreigners in two's where possible and that was the idea behind Glatzer (AUT). He was really signed as an add-on to the Edelmann (AUT) deal and we will just have to see how things develop.

702145760ce6fbfe721f622b18710e60.png

I'd like to think that relaxing these rules doesn't make me a sell-out, but we will see how I feel about it as the save progresses.

Dec 2052

Domestic games. I was starting to get a little concerned about our form, but 7 points from our last 3 games have lifted us 7 points clear of safety. We need to build on this now and move up the table to safety so that we can relax a little.

Harry Grew (ENG) has scored 135 goals for us in 8 seasons, yet absolutely nobody has shown an interest in buying him. Last season he was worth £13.5M but his goal return has been poorer this season, (just 13 goals), so it makes sense. He's 28 now, (so in his prime), and with that sort of goal-scoring pedigree, (and no penalties in that number), I would have thought that someone else should have shown interest.
