Emulating Wilder & Knills Sheffield United - With the Tools We Have (Overlapping CBs FM21?)

Recommended Posts

Ciao Ragazzi,

I'd like to know if you have any thoughts on emulating this style, would like to see your attempts/thoughts on producing what the blades are doing but on FM,

Obviously getting the left sided & right sided CBs in the back 3 to overlap the way they do in real life is, well, impossible?

Whilst attempting this, the tactic I've come up with plays rather similarly in the press, and in the attacking varieties... though it's showing longballs as 0, that is quite invalid.

28 games in after tweaking a lot of stuff I've come up with this so far:

At first I thought I'd give norwood the DLP role but found this leading to him getting the ball a little too much, by using a DM(s) it allows more variaton as not EVERYTHING is going through the magnet of a dlp(s), now the outward cbs that are wider/pushing up get involved a lot more. I know this isn't quite overlapping but as they both have gets futher forward, brings ball out of defence, runs down right/left, it's the best you can achieve with this version.

Using a balanced mentality at first the outward CBs were far far too passive, switching to positive they're more involved in overall play, and on the counter actually do get a cross in/play in the same zones as they do in real life.

I see the main threat creator being the cross, using hit early crosses & look for overlap is also beneficial to what we're trying to achieve with the overlapping runs.

heres a goal we scored against tottenham; It's not just hit it long to the TM & hope for the best, theres some beautiful interchanges at times

on the counter it's great to watch

sitting joint 5th in the league somehow the team has created the most chances in the pl

really happy with my mezzalas actually getting out wide and putting in balls, heres fleck against chelsea creating a chance we put away

still not happy with the outward cbs though... an idea perhaps to season the cooking is to use inverted wingbacks in the lwb/rwb position, this i will test out

any tips for the overlapping cbs would be appreciated

edit: posted unfinished, lost half the writing/pictures by mistake.. will fix shortly

It's not really possible to fully replicate in this version of FM.

Playing on a high mentality and having players with certain traits can get some movement occasionally but it's more the CB's running past with the ball rather than an off the ball overlap like Sheffield do. Either movement won't happen anywhere near as much as it does for Sheffield in real life.

So traits on the outer CB's to encourage movement like brings ball out of defence, runs with ball down left/right, gets forward whenever possible etc.

yeah, with the right ppms and setup i'm starting to see more of this which i like

this is from open play to get to these positions, whipping in a cross/cutting it back... liking this, look at where the right sided wingback is (baldock / sakai) actually cutting in due to the bpd(r) position

edit: don't know why my TM took #10... dont ask :Ddidn't realise that

Yeah that's the sort of movement I was managing to get, which is pretty nice. Seemed to happen more often the higher the mentality used as well.

It's not what Shef Utd do under Wilder as they overlap off the ball and there's lot's of other movements to go along with it between the whole team, but probably the closest you're likely to get on this version unfortunately.

I don't know how they'd manage to implement it on FM unless they ever introduced with and without the ball formations.
