[FM20] An out-of-the-box attempt at a semi-realistic journeyman?!

Recommended Posts

Lets sum up FM20 for me so far shall we?

I started off in the BETA managing Manchester United where I basically made a super tactic because of how broken it was and we won everything pretty easily.

From here I went to Asia where I managed 18 or so seasons of an improbable challenge.

Next up was FC Toompea which ended in part because of the facilities bug.

We then went back to FM15 to do a youth challenge....which turned out buggier than FM20 so I went back to FM20 Brazil but the league was bugged.

Somewhere in all of that was a season stint with Hackney Wick.

Then I started a European perfectionist which ended after one promotion due to a registration bug and I turned that into an Oceanic Perfectionist which has now also ended because of the 11 nations that qualify for the Champions League, only 4, maybe 5 of those nations have the correct clubs qualify for the Champions League.

7 of those 8 saves have used editor data and although I have used some very good league files this save I shan't be using any at all, no added leagues, no long team names and no Sortitoutsi files.

Pure, good old fashioned vanilla FM.

The aim of this save is to just enjoy myself, and maybe to have some faith that FM20 can come good?

I won't be starting unemployed and this won't be a youth only save. I'll post the club and game set-up in the next post though.

The set-up:

A large database with every league in Europe loaded as playable, no players added to playable teams and a first for me is that I AM using attribute masking!

Another rule is that I'm also not allowed to use downloaded tactics.

The first club:

I took this picture in the 1-0 win over Biggleswade Town in the game which won Hereford promotion to the National League North.

Why Hereford?

Hereford are my local playable club and are one of two teams that I've been to see (the other being Cinderford Town in I think a 1-0 home defeat against Wimborne Town in 2013) so what better place to start a semi-realistic journeyman?

Hereford Football Club is an English association football club from the city of Hereford. They were founded in 2014 as a phoenix club for Hereford United, and inherited their Edgar Street stadium. They are nicknamed 'The Whites' after their predominantly white kit, or 'The Bulls' after the Hereford cattle breed, and their motto is 'Our greatest glory lies not in never having fallen, but in rising when we fall'. The club is affiliated to the Herefordshire County Football Association.

The club currently plays in the National League North, the sixth tier of the English football league system. They entered the football pyramid before the 2015–16 season, and won the Midland Football League Premier Division followed by the Southern League South & West and the Southern League Premier.

Good luck, very interested to see what path your career takes? In terms of realism are you going to factor in things like living expenses, club prestige and things like that? Or are you going to just play it by ear and go with what feels right in terms of moves to other clubs?

I won't be factoring living expenses like I think you did in a save of yours? I may be incorrect there, I think it would be very unrealistic for me getting a job that is more than one level above me and the only two that come to mind are from a few seasons ago, Di Canio from Swindon to Sunderland and Dave Hockaday from Forest Green to Leeds in 2014. In that sense this will probably be a very England-centric save but who knows down the line!

@Makoto Nakamura if you have the spare wage and you can convince him to join you should try sign Thomas Oualembo, he is a goal machine and should be on a free if you have only just started the save.

He wanted £1,800 p/w and the most we could offer was £800 p/w, we tried though!

He's still a free agent on August 6th but he is a wanted man.

Shame that the save with my database has to come to an end, but you know what? I avoided England for so long that i'm strangely kind of excited to see it again. Good luck!

A strong start to the league with just 3 goals conceded which sees us in a playoff spot, Kelsey Mooney has hit the ground running too with 6 goals which makes him the 2nd highest scorer in the league!

I remember Adam Campbell being really fast and having good potential back in FM12 or 13, it's a shame that it didn't work out for him.

Looking forward to this. Though if this doesn't work out, there's always a Llanfairpwll save to be done...

An almost perfect month and Darlington's new inability to win matches means that we've hit the top of the table! Our backups were able to do the job against Walsall Wood in the FA Cup and we'll now face Bishop's Cleeve in the 3rd qualifying round whilst Tom Own-Evans goal against Kettering is likely to be one of the goals of the season!

An unbeaten month in the league and now we're the only team in the league with a solitary defeat and we move 4 points clear! Against Farsley Stephen Dawson scored his 1st of the season and we'll add it to the shortlist for goal of the season!

We also exited the FA Cup in the 4th Qualifying Round in an away defeat at Dagenham and Redbridge who at the time were 2nd in the National League and so were the 2nd hardest team we could have faced.

A poor month in the league sees our lead cut to just the 3 points and it could have been so much worse if it weren't for Kelsey who moves onto 16 goals in the league. Our backups needed a replay to finally get the better of Basford in the FA Trophy and we now get to face AFC Telford in the 4th Qualifying Round.

Yikes, a poor month sees us knocked out of the FA Trophy thanks to a 120th minute goal and we've fallen to 2nd in the league but we do have a game in hand which we'll try not to waste.

We got Rowan Liburd to score! Plus Tom Owen-Evans is our very own Ruben Neves as he only scores long range screamers and he got another 2 this month! Thankfully we've guaranteed a playoff spot with 4 games to play as it looks unlikely we'll finish up in 1st.

We were evenly matched against Darlington but relied on 2 late goals to send us through, and then we were just utterly useless away to Chester but we met the seasons expectations so at least the board don't want to sack me. Chester beat Kidderminster 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the playoff final.

Just read your thread while sat at my desk at work! Loved it and has made me want to rush home and start a Hereford save myself.

I moved to Hereford with my parents when I was 14. Being a Villa fan, it was too far to travel back on my own so got my football fix down at Edgar Street! I fell in love with them and watched them reach the Play-Offs in the old 3rd Division under guidance of Graham Turner. I also spent a week at the club doing 'work experience' and scored a goal against their first team in a training game haha. It's my claim to fame.

I'm definitely going to get a Hereford save on the go. Never played FM so low down (Championship with Villa) is the lowest I've played so will be something very new to me.

Can't wait to see how your 2nd season goes.

Finally caught one of your stories before it reach 2536 pages and i need an entire lifetime to catch up :D

Unlucky in play offs but there's always another year. Some of those newbies looks really good, Poch and Malachi will be amazing for this level.

It's alright, this thread should be easier to keep on top of because I'm actually in charge of every game now as I'm not using instant result! I'm watching every game on key highlights for this save! :D

There will always be other years, as log as we keep challenging when we're expected to challenge then I'll be happy! Sam Sanders (who I've nicknamed Colonel) has started with 4 goals in the first 2 games so hopefully we've found our Kelsey Mooney replacement too!

Clearly a month of two halves, after the defeat to Guiseley we changed to a control possession style and it led to 4 away wins on the trot to move us back into playoff contention!

Ah, Hereford. My FM love. The closest I ever came to completing Dafuge's Challenge, and the best FM save I ever had was my 12 season stint with Hereford on FMsomething. Took them to the PL. The joy I felt when we finally managed to go up was immense.

On FM18 then I'm going to presume? I'm glad other people love Hereford! :D

The change to more possession based football seems to be working as we hold onto a playoff place and we go through to face Hartlepool in the FA Cup 1st Round! :D

I want to believe it was earlier than 18, but I honestly can't remember. I have actually thought about starting a save with them before I saw your thread, so this might spur me on further.

I only guessed FM18 because that was the season they were in the 7th tier, their reputation may have been big enough to get back-to-back promotions in FM17.

Well then, hopefully I'll manage them a while longer then to continue to spur you on. :D

Just the one league game this month as we've been busy with the FA Cup and Trophy, we're at home to Darlington in the FA Trophy 1st Round whilst a TQ Addy hat-trick in the FA Cup has sent us through to the 3rd Round! :D

Well, it isn't a Premier League club sadly.

It will do! We currently have £1.1m in the bank which is why I'm getting these youth facilities upgraded! :D
