Opponent constantly abusing over the top through balls

Recommended Posts

I'm honestly getting so fed up of every goal I concede coming from a 50 yard punt over the top and the opponent's striker going clean through and scoring the majority of the time. Whether it be Tranmere Rovers or Manchester United or Werder Bremen, literally every team on every save I come up against deploys this tactic and I can't do anything about it. Does anyone else have this issue? And is there any way to genuinely combat this that isn't just playing super defensively? Because it's kind of breaking the game for me at the minute.

That's a VERY high line you have. Looks like they tried to play the offside trap and failed miserably. How is your tactical familiarity?

And if you post more detail about your team and system, where you are in the league and where you're expected to finish, maybe someone can offer advice.

I'm currently 7th in the Championship with Coventry and expected to finish 19th, so safe to say I'm definitely over-achieving, but that is largely down to just about out-scoring opponents. I do try and deploy a higher line in home games and an offside trap and my tactical familiarity is fluid in almost all categories.

I use a 4-1-2-3 custom tiki-taka with an attacking mentality for home games and a positive/balanced mentality for away games depending on how much better the opponent is.

Okay, it's still unclear what the overall tactical setup is because we can't see roles, duties and TIs. 2 things to note though.

You're massively over-achieving. Whatever you're doing - for now it is working and working well. You're predicted 19th, so there are 18 other teams who are considered better than your team. So they'd (in general) be better at finding space, making runs, passing etc. You're playing a dangerous game with a weaker team, so it's to be expected that the better players will sometimes punish you. It seems you've kept it to a minimum though.

The other point I wanted to make is that it does look like a off-side trap fail. It may not be tactical familiarity, but it could be team cohesion, someone new, someone new and not speaking the language, a lapse in concentration etc. The timing of that offside trap was just way off. It may not be anything to worry about. It may just be a one-off or it may be that there's a language or cohesion issue. Maybe have a look at that.

I was having the same issue, seemingly 3/4 chances every game ball over the top.

I just dropped my defensive line back two clicks and only 3/4 a season.

I was thinking it could be that the defenders simply aren't good enough to organise a decent offside trap, all of my CBs are English so language isn't an issue but I've brought them all with me from League One, so they aren't great. I'll try dropping the line back and scrapping offside traps until I get some better defenders in. Thanks!
